Maloney signs long-term contract as Coyotes GM

Looks like yesterday’s report was accurate. The NHL-owned Phoenix Coyotes have indeed come to terms on a long-term contract with general manager Don Maloney.

“We are very pleased that Don has agreed to sign a long-term contract extension with the Coyotes,” said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly in a release.

“Since joining the team in 2007, Don has done an outstanding job managing his team and building a competitive roster that has produced on the ice, even given less than ideal circumstances off the ice. The NHL remains committed to securing the Coyotes’ future in Glendale under new ownership, and we believe Don’s long-term agreement evidences that he is equally committed.”

Maloney will speak to reporters Tuesday (Monday’s a holiday) at Jobing.com Arena.

If we were there, we’d ask:

1. What happens if the Coyotes move to, say, Quebec City? Will you follow?

2. Wait, is there any news about the ownership thing? We should’ve asked that first.

3. When are you going to give head coach Dave Tippett a new contract?

4. And goalie Mike Smith? Any chance of re-signing that guy?
