Sharks’ Galiardi: Quick also guilty of embellishment

May 23, 2013, 3:30 PM EDT

Earlier today, we passed along a report of Sharks forward Logan Couture accusing Kings captain Dustin Brown of diving.

Turns out there’s more!

Now, it’s another Sharks forward — TJ Galiardi — claiming Kings goalie Jonathan Quick embellishes too.

“What kind of bugs me about him, I don’t know if I should say it, but a little embellishment every now and then,” Galiardi told the San Jose Mercury News. “You skate by and you don’t even touch him or you barely even touch him and he’s throwing his hands in the air.”

Galiardi was in Quick’s kitchen early and often in Game 4.

It began with this:

And culminated with Galiardi getting a goalie interference call midway through the second period — a call Galiardi said Quick sold to the officials.

“The thing is, with video, something we like to say around here is ball don’t lie,” Galiardi explained. “It’s an old basketball term, but when you watch the video, the video doesn’t lie.

“So I’m skating by and I barely touch him and he’s throwing his hands in the air, it’s kind of one of those things — he looks bad on video, not me.”

L.A. defenseman Drew Doughty said we should consider the source of said complaints.

“It’s not even playoff talk,” Doughty told The Times. “It’s just funny to even hear that from a guy who is the biggest diver on their team.

“Like it’s just ridiculous he can even say that, to be honest.”

The Sharks and Kings will do battle in the men’s 3-meter springboard Game 5 tonight from the Staples Center.

Ex-referee Fraser: Brown hurting his reputation with diving

Bieksa calls out Thornton, Couture for embellishment, ‘lack of integrity’

This year’s playoffs are like a bunch of high school girls going at it.

    • mehetmet - May 23, 2013 at 3:47 PM

The ref’s seem to be about that caliber as well though, so i guess it fits.

  2. 950003cups - May 23, 2013 at 3:51 PM

It’s embarrassing. All these players and coaches crying about hits, embellishments, calls, non-calls, diving, early whistles, late whistles, off sides, high sticks, etc…

    Just play hockey.

    • ibieiniid - May 23, 2013 at 4:12 PM

idk man… I think embellishers need to be called out. although, the middle of a playoff series doesn’t seem like the time to do it.

  3. loinstache - May 23, 2013 at 3:54 PM

As I said in the other thread, the ref literally skated by the kings bench in game 4 and jokingly made a diving gesture regarding Galiardi. TSN then showed footage of both refs talking to him regarding it, as well as had a SJ assist coach confirm they talked to TJ during the intermission to cut it out.

Lacking however was an embellishment call… up to the refs to start disciplining/shaming these players with an embellishment call instead not calling legitimate penalties committed on the player, ala what happens to Burrows and Karlsson

    • elvispocomo - May 23, 2013 at 4:34 PM

I don’t necessarily agree the ref did the diving gesture jokingly, but more as an explanation without having to skate to their bench and talk about it. I do agree that they should just call it if that’s the case though, a penalty in the first period of the first game of the season should be the same as in the third period/overtime of game 7 of the finals.

Quick does dive. Galliardi is guilty of it as well. Stop pointing out the obvious! Everyone is diving this year. I dont know why but instead of the cup hand them a gold medal in diving.

    • elvispocomo - May 23, 2013 at 4:36 PM

Ah, a sharks fan made an appearance! So when other teams talk about the Sharks doing this, it’s whining, and when Sharks talk about other teams, it’s pointing out the obvious. I thought only teams like the Kings and Canucks were guilty of diving and whining?

  5. ibieiniid - May 23, 2013 at 4:14 PM

man so many goalies embellish these days. they don’t get a LOT of chances to draw penalties, so when they get the smallest opportunity, they run with it because they almost NEVER get diving calls against them.

did you guys see Holtby flip over sideways when he got nudged in the first round. he may be the worst one out there as far as goalie embellishment.

    • 19to77 - May 23, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Somewhere, Mike Smith heard his reputation was at stake and reflexively fell over, then stood up demanding a call.

      • ibieiniid - May 23, 2013 at 4:51 PM

sounds like we’ve got our top 2 seeds in next year’s first annual NHL EMBELLISH-OFF!

I’ve got a couple guys lined up for the Whine-Offs as well…. but we’ll hafta see how things play out the rest of this postseason to properly seed them.

Galiardi is a joke of a professional hockey player – how he even has a contract is beyond me.

  7. sharksman - May 23, 2013 at 4:23 PM

can they all just shut up and play the game !
this was all reported on csn bay area yesterday don’t know why it is a story today ??

  8. khmerson562 - May 23, 2013 at 4:24 PM

Can’t wait until tonight game. Come on kings let score some goals.

  9. 19to77 - May 23, 2013 at 4:33 PM

Pots, kettles and whiners everywhere these playoffs, and few classy, professional hockey players to be found.

  10. sjsharks66 - May 23, 2013 at 4:42 PM

Ahhh a Canucks fan who’s team was swept and has now jumped on the Kings bandwagon.

Sharks fans are not stupid. They know when players dive and when they don’t. The only difference is we can admit when ours do. You forget. You watch every game your team plays. You know when they dive and when they don’t. Sometimes people say your team dives and you can admit it. Sometimes you don’t see eye to eye.

    • hawkeedawg - May 23, 2013 at 7:38 PM

You mean like Thornton shaking his left hand to get a call when he was slashed on the STICK by his right hand. GOLD MEDAL!!

  11. rebel21das - May 23, 2013 at 4:55 PM

Takes one to know one, but I agree the video doesn’t lie, Quick comes outta the blue and gets all hissy which is becoming the norm of this series, every time things don’t go his way he throws his hands up and looks to the refs like “come on guys”, while it’s OK for him to punch people in the face, run and cry after the officials, and throw his hands up in the air like he just don’t care……too much lol I know but it’s the theme lately like all of the complaining from both sides. Can’t wait for tonight’s game, hoping the Sharks can keep the momentum up and take a game away at the Staples Center.

As my boy Maynard James Keenan says in the Tool song the Pot, “Who are you to wave you finger? You must have been have been out your head”. I had to seeing how “the pot calling the kettle black” has become the favorite expression in this thread. Boosh, Go Sharks!!!!!

  13. bauxjangles - May 23, 2013 at 6:04 PM

These sharks players are clearly seeing the game from a unique perspective, and for Galiardi it’s from the viewpoint of having his head up his ass

Like many of you other fellow Kings fans out there, I too never harbored any ill will towards these Sharks when the series started. Now however, they make me positively sick to my stomach and therefore their ‘immediate’ eradication is not only desired, but completely and utterly necessary. On Sunday we Kings need to go up there to Silicon Valley and ‘shove it’ to these Queens big time ! Thornton and his minions are nothing more than a bunch of perennial ‘loud-mouthed’ losers, who’ve now shown their true colors by questioning the ‘greatness’ which is our glorious rearguard captain, Jonathan Quick. As far as I’m concerned, the Sharks and their fans represent nothing more than some ‘miserable & pathetic’ obstacle which is standing in the way of our glorious enterprise. Therefore they’re now going to be ‘smashed’ on Sunday, no different than some horde of filthy ants being squashed on the sidewalk under the heels of a troop of “decent & determined’ workers marching along !

    GO KINGS GO !!!! … TODAY, TOMORROW AND FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
