Discuss: Rangers stay alive with OT win

May 23, 2013, 10:03 PM EDT

Torey Krug might be the surprise rookie addition of the 2013 playoffs, but one of the out-of-left-field guys from 2012 kept the New York Rangers alive in their second-round series against the Boston Bruins. Chris Kreider scored the winner to give the Rangers a 4-3 OT victory, helping New York avoid a humiliating sweep.

  • So, how much will people make of that embarrassing Tuukka Rask goal? The Boston Bruins might have some serious regrets as some sloppiness probably cost them a break before the Eastern Conference finals … or dare we say, more?
  • Let’s start the inevitable questions with one about Rask. The Bruins gave up a 3-0 series lead in a second-round series against the Philadelphia Flyers. Are there any worries among Boston fans after this loss?
  • Here’s another one: should John Tortorella dress Brad Richards in Game 5? What about peripheral guys like Aaron Asham?
  • Did the Rangers figure things out on the PP? Brian Boyle‘s goal was almost as big as he is.
  • Tyler Seguin finally broke through with a goal on the power-play. He’s been generating chances but hasn’t had much luck. Do you expect his scoring to really pick up now that he got that first tally off of his back?
  • Is there any concern about Zdeno Chara wearing down? He’s been playing big minutes so far and was on the ice for Kreider’s winner.
  • What kind of chance do you give the Rangers to come back? They did rally from down 2-0 against the Washington Captials, after all?

Totally disgusted. First two Ranger goals were pure garbage (one due to a mere lost edge, the other due to Chara and Rask not doing their respective jobs). The rest however were the result of a Ranger team that had its back against the wall–they played their butts off.

    • bigbadbruins77 - May 23, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Agree. Make it up to us on sat!

    • andrewproughcfe - May 23, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Makes up for a few of the Bruins’ garbage goals in game 7 against the Leafs.

  2. bronxsanman - May 23, 2013 at 10:10 PM

We ain’t dead yet my friends. I’m extremely happy for Chris Kreider tonight. All year he’s been up and down with torts. Good for you kid. Enjoy your moment.

    • cheesesteak75 - May 24, 2013 at 6:41 AM

You have one foot in the grave and the other is being held by your coach!

    • johnstone17 - May 24, 2013 at 8:05 AM

      Torts is ruining this kid.

  3. taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Rangers don’t belong. It’s a shame that Rask blew it. Refs did their part as well. The “nudge” was enough. The NHL gets its game 5.

    • stakex - May 23, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Boston scored 2 power play goals, and another as a power play expired…. Boston got more then their fair share of help from the refs.

      • sabatimus - May 24, 2013 at 12:29 AM

        Tonight, yes, you are correct.

    • 19to77 - May 23, 2013 at 10:17 PM

I guess it wouldn’t be a game in this year’s playoffs without someone immediately asserting conspiracy theories because the wrong team won or something.

      • JoeAvg - May 23, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Yeah it’s getting old isn’t it.

    • tfaltin - May 24, 2013 at 8:49 AM

Same kid, same comment. Make sure your foil helmet doesn’t come off.

  4. stakex - May 23, 2013 at 10:11 PM

It was great to see the Rangers avoid the sweep and I really liked their fight late in the game, but I still doubt their ability to win the next three games.

With that said, if you’re Boston it has to be a little unnerving to not only lose this game but to do it by blowing a 2-0 lead thanks to two terrible goals. When you have a team down, you need to finish them… and Boston blew a great chance to do it because of sloppy play. Not a big deal for them yet, but if the Rangers win the next game then there might be some thinking about what could have been tonight for the Bruins.

    • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 10:13 PM

The Rags scored some flukes. They didn’t actually play well.

      • tfaltin - May 24, 2013 at 9:06 AM

Yeah I can’t believe Gary Bettman was able to make the winning goal look so authentic as he flew it with his remote control. I was hoping we’d all be done with you after the Capitals were out. It’s been a pleasure talking hockey with Bruins fans this series, instead of talking conspiracy with the likes of you.

  5. pfailp8 - May 23, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Kreider had a fantastic game, even beyond the GWG. he was chasing down pucks, and you could tell he was getting close to letting one rip all game. He should be spending more time on a line with Nash, IMO. That would be a big, powerful, fast, and dangerous line.

Rask really pooped the bed in the game on those first two goals.

Not sure how I feel about dressing richards or scratching him for the next game.

Biggest concern for the Blueshirts is our defensive depth right now. Everyone is hurt.

I really loved the intensity we played with in the 2nd half of the game. Once they started playing harder and more physical, you could feel the energy level go up exponentially in the building. I think that really helped here.

Dont want to make any predictions for the rest of the series, but hopefully the Rangers can step it up and make it, at the very least, a competitive series.

    GO RANGERS!

  6. taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Torts dropping f bombs was real classy. My baby girl heard the f word for the first time tonight thanks to that whining piece of trash.

    • stakex - May 23, 2013 at 10:16 PM

Grow up dude. As someone who actually plays hockey, let me tell you that you hear f bombs a thousand times during the game. If anything, blame NBC for having their mics on near the bench.

Or, do what most people do and just accept that by age 6 your kid has learning every curse word in the book from here classmates.

      • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 10:25 PM

You attempt to play hockey loser. I don’t watch sports expecting to to hear f bombs. NBC should be fined. As well as that whiny little man Tortorella.

      • sabatimus - May 24, 2013 at 12:32 AM

Hey taint, NBC apologized for the f-bomb right after it happened. I suggest that, if you don’t like swearing, you don’t watch professional sports.

      • sabatimus - May 24, 2013 at 12:34 AM

Besides, if your baby girl heard her first f-bomb, count herself lucky: she heard it before (I’m assuming) elementary school, where most kids first hear it.

    • pfailp8 - May 23, 2013 at 10:27 PM

If you’re a boston fan (specifically, living in the boston area), I highly doubt tonight was the first time your daughter heard that word.

      • devilsarethebest - May 23, 2013 at 11:19 PM

        He’s a Caps fan.

    • biffnasty - May 23, 2013 at 10:32 PM

      Your story makes no sense
      A) why is your “baby”up at 10pm? And
      B) how did you and your boyfriend have a “baby”

      • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 10:35 PM

10 p.m.? It was around 8:30ish central time.

      • biffnasty - May 23, 2013 at 10:56 PM

So you and your *partner*, with yourme daughter, are boston fans living in the central time zone?

      • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 11:01 PM

I get the feeling you’re the typical fat mutant New Yorker. Hey tubby, the Knicks lost, the Giants lost, and the Rangers are going to lose. You no longer have any reason to live.

      • sabatimus - May 24, 2013 at 12:34 AM

Wow I’m beginning to feel quite sorry for your daughter if this is the kind of garbage you spew.

      • tfaltin - May 24, 2013 at 9:46 AM

No reason to live after your sports teams lose huh? Shallow existence.

    • philk0731 - May 23, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Just watched the video at Deadspin.com – it was actually the linesman you can hear say “f*** you” to Tortorella

    • tfaltin - May 24, 2013 at 9:44 AM

Also, it was the linesman. I feel bad for you’re daughter, she must be real good at whining.

  7. jaredo10 - May 23, 2013 at 10:13 PM

now that’s playing 60 minute plus hockey. LGR all day bytches.. Boston getting tried can they close ?

  8. 19to77 - May 23, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Bruins got sloppy defensively. Evidently they thought the series was over coming into the game, because they didn’t seem at all committed enough. Can’t count on that lasting, though. The best the Rangers could do was eke out an OT win with the help of some abysmal gaffes by Rask. They can’t count on four straight games of that kind of sloppiness, and if that’s what it takes for them to win one… the writing’s on the wall.

    • stakex - May 23, 2013 at 10:23 PM

While theres truth to that, there is no substitute for confidence and this game might give the Rangers some. Not to mention the Bruins have a recent history filled with problems closing out series (last round for example). If the Rangers can find a way to win game five, you know as well as I do Boston will be gripping their sticks a little tighter.

  9. biffnasty - May 23, 2013 at 10:19 PM

what a beautiful goal by Kreider, on a perfect pass from Nash..hope the rangers finally get their game straight and make this a series

  10. alwaysgame7 - May 23, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Positives from this game for the B’s:
1.Seguin finally got on the board
    2.Krug continues to impress
    3. Offense still looks good when Rask isn’t giving the Rangers momentum

    Negatives:
I’d be here all night, you know what they are

Take it to them in Boston!

    • tfaltin - May 24, 2013 at 1:33 PM

I can’t believe how good Krug is. Bartkowski has been solid as well but is completely overshadowed. The Bruins havent had a defenseman who can skate the puck out of trouble like this in a while. He just seems to be getting more and more comfortable out there too. Scary weapon for a team that has needed offense from the point for years.

  11. Troll_toll - May 23, 2013 at 10:30 PM

@taintedlombardis you sir are a moron. That is all.

    • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 10:32 PM

      Did I hurt your feelings?

      • Troll_toll - May 23, 2013 at 10:58 PM

“Ya gotta pay the troll toll.”

…Bet you’ve paid your share of troll tolls huh bud?

  12. jr507 - May 23, 2013 at 10:31 PM

Probably shouldn’t be using the word “dude” when telling someone else to grow up.

Anyway, Kreider steps up big so 2-1 odds Angry Fonz benches him for game five. Torts is trash.

  13. shortsxit34 - May 23, 2013 at 10:32 PM

The B’s absolutely dominated for periods of the game, then played stretches of embarrassing hockey. They’ve always been a Jekyll/Mr. Hyde kind of team, but I’ve never seen them play that type of game to this extent.

Tuukka gave up some awful goals. On the first one, even after he tripped it was an easy save. Instead of using his paddle he tried to make the save look cute and held his stick upright to use his blade.

Chara played the worst game I’ve ever seen out of him. Several giveaways, the worst obviously leading to the tying goal. In the second he tried to make a cute drop pass skating behind the netcinto the corner, and there wasn’t a teammate within twenty feet of him. He was flat-out not paying any attention tonight.

    • alwaysgame7 - May 23, 2013 at 10:35 PM

I honestly believe if Tuukka doesn’t lose a blade for that first goal the series would be over. You could see that goal energized them, they were a different team. The Chara mishap just added to that.

Hoping the fans in the TD Garden make some noise so Boston can close this out… But its the playoffs who knows.

Kudos to the Rangers for sticking with it

  14. csilojohnson - May 23, 2013 at 10:43 PM

tainted is a disgruntled Caps fan.
Your daughter hearing a curse word is nothing compared to the fact we all have to deal with haters like you having little soon to be hater kids.

    • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 10:57 PM

What a piece of trash. My daughter hearing the rare curse word is why she won’t soon be a little trashy kid.

      • theageofquarrel - May 23, 2013 at 11:13 PM

So calling people fat so and so’s is not being trashy? When you get called on your BS you resort to name calling because that is all you got.

      • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 11:17 PM

LOL. Who cast the first stone?

      • 19to77 - May 23, 2013 at 11:38 PM

Who cares? You’re as willing to insult people as anyone else. You’re as much of a dick as anyone else.

      • tfaltin - May 24, 2013 at 1:37 PM

This was personally my favorite of yours so far because it encompasses so many levels of low life:

  15. Stiller43 - May 23, 2013 at 10:59 PM

I’d be more concerned about having an idiot for a father (or mother), rather than her hearing a word she’ll hear another billion times in her lifetime.

You dont want to hear any salty language? Watch sesame st with her rather than sports.

    • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 11:03 PM

That’s rich. I pummel your ass on these boards.

I bet you let your boyfriend pummel your ass at night on a nighty basis

      • 19to77 - May 23, 2013 at 11:39 PM

Question! Did you let your daughter read that post?

      • devilsarethebest - May 24, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Is he actually gay? And even if he is, why make a deal of it? We live in a country where everyone has the right to express themselves without judgement.

  16. anthonykornheiser - May 23, 2013 at 11:05 PM

Tainted, what is your deal? Every post is whining about conspiracy theories, how this and that is fixed. Take a chill man, you don’t even root for either team. You’re odd on PFT too. You’re like a little child. Do you really have to come on here and complain how John tortorella just cursed in front of your kid? You’re grasping at straws already. Give it a rest. Your daughters father is a jerkoff

    • Troll_toll - May 23, 2013 at 11:10 PM

      amen

    • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 11:16 PM

Straws? wTF are you talking about? It’s a shame you weren’t just another one of your father’s “jerkoffs”.

  17. hockeygal67 - May 23, 2013 at 11:09 PM

taintedlombardis, you may want to rewatch the exchange. The f-word you heard came from the referee, not Torts.

While Torts did use the word, the microphone picked up only the refs words. Blame NBC. Their between the glass guy is supposed to hit mute when something like that happens. Must have been distracted by the exchange instead.

  18. luciddream7 - May 23, 2013 at 11:15 PM

    Taintedlombardis sucks. Toughen up.

  19. anthonykornheiser - May 23, 2013 at 11:18 PM

Taintedlombardis, ny people have no reason to live because the giants, Knicks and rangers lost? You sound intelligent. You’re a caps and redskins fan and you’re crapping on new Yorkers. You are obsessed with ny, hence you always blabbing on rangers posts. You have serious issues, I can’t believe you have a child…..weirdo.
You hit the nail on the head, new Yorkers are all fat. I’m sure people in the dc and Virginia, southern areas are the epitome of class and being fit…l

    • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 11:20 PM

      Just hitting the speed bag…

      • tfaltin - May 24, 2013 at 1:38 PM

    • pitpenguinsrulez - May 23, 2013 at 11:28 PM

Tainted spews garbage on PHT constantly

  20. csilojohnson - May 23, 2013 at 11:18 PM

    I did not type “trash”.
    Guilty conscience?

  21. luciddream7 - May 23, 2013 at 11:24 PM

Nobody likes you and one day I’m sure you daughter will resent you too.

    • taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Oh no. Some loser on PHT said nobody likes me. Are you 7?

  22. taintedlombardis - May 23, 2013 at 11:25 PM

Peace out PHT. I will return tomorrow to share more insight, knowledge, and wisdom.

    • pitpenguinsrulez - May 23, 2013 at 11:30 PM

      We wont miss you

    • theageofquarrel - May 23, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Don’t mean whining and crying all over PHT.

    • johnstone17 - May 24, 2013 at 8:11 AM

As if you have some to share.

  23. jkay1818 - May 23, 2013 at 11:30 PM

Can you believe someone like that actually has a child? This is what’s wrong with society. Some creep who sits at home all day obsessing over the rangers and other my sports team as a hobby. Meanwhile he roots for the caps and redskins. Sad. Your daughter has an excellent role model. Keep having fake arguments with John tortorella for cursing at your daughter, I’m sure he s listening. And keep writing on other posts how the rangers pay the league off….
    You’re so bizarre I’m sure you don’t even have a kid….

  24. shortsxit34 - May 23, 2013 at 11:43 PM

Then irony in Tainted asking, “Did I hurt your feelings,” while simultaneously whining and demanding a network be fined because Torts hurt his virgin ears.

  25. girouxed - May 24, 2013 at 12:32 AM

    LoL

Rangers aren’t winning 4 straight. It was pure luck they won this game and you all know it.

Also do to a little laziness on the B’s part.

  26. devilsarethebest - May 24, 2013 at 12:36 AM

I think most people are just hopping on the “hate tainted” bandwagon and most people really have no hard feelings towards him. Because he really didn’t say anything that bad; all he said was if not for the Rags fluke goal this series would be over, which is true.

    • tfaltin - May 24, 2013 at 1:40 PM

I mean this in the most informative tone possible, he’s incessently complained about NYR favoritism since the playoffs started.

  27. jkay1818 - May 24, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Devils, you obviously don’t see his ridiculous posts on almost every article and missed the comment about his daughter, etc, etc…..the guy is a psychopath

    • devilsarethebest - May 24, 2013 at 12:57 AM

Don’t see a problem with the post about his daughter. He was angry NBC let curse words be heard on a clean program. Just like anyone wouldn’t show their little kids movies with swear words, that’s why movie ratings exist. I do see his posts on all the articles and while tons of them make no sense and sound just plain stupid, some of them actually make good points, but people here on PHT are so judgmental, that he can even say “Crosby is the best player in the NHL” and will still get tons of thumbs-downs and hateful comments. People say how he is unemployed etc. though most people that post here are probably teenagers themselves. Anyways, have a good life, and I’ll see some Rags players Sunday at my local golf course.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - May 24, 2013 at 2:50 AM

For starters Tainted would never say that “Crosby is the best player in the league” all he does is try to bash on Crosby by saying that Crosby would struggle on the Crapitals. His posts like you state don’t make sense. Tainted is just nothing more than a disgruntled Crapitals fan who can’t handle the facts without having to make up a stupid excuse/reason. He brought this all on himself.

  28. yousuxxors - May 24, 2013 at 1:09 AM

angry fonz lol man that is def torts … rangers got lucky today.

  29. theskinsman - May 24, 2013 at 3:13 AM

Rask was very, very bad.But the main reason the Rangers deserved the game is Julien INSISTING on playing Jagr. Note to Claude, it’s not 1993 anymore. Jagr can’t score on an empty net. But he can lose the puck while slowly twirling around nearly 100% of the time.
Guy WAS great. WAS. Now he’s an anchor dragging a good team down.

  30. nepo784 - May 24, 2013 at 6:49 AM

NYR win the series and TUUKKA shows he’s unworthy of being the #1 goalie in net for BOS. Already choked away a 3-0 series lead in 2010

  31. papajack1259 - May 24, 2013 at 7:41 AM

The Tort is what he, is in few months if they lose, he will be looking for work, spoiled prep school boy who was spoon fed The Rangers deserve better…..and I think ownership knows that …….. Talk about a fluke with Rask?….reminded me of the Buckner dribbled in 86… if you’re a Bruin Fan as I am You have to be a little alarmed…….

  32. scalfor3 - May 24, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Hopefully the B’s get Seidenberg back on the ice for game 5. We all love Dougie and know he’ll be awesome some day, but that day is not now. Kid looks overmatched in his own end. Willing to bet Chara will look more “energized” when he has his old partner back.

  33. 8man - May 24, 2013 at 12:14 PM

First, let me congratulate the Rangers on a gritty and gutty win. They could have quit and didn’t. They stayed ready and took advantage of everything given to them. Well done.

And now, I am officially worried. I’ve already seen the Bs blow a 3-1 lead to Toronto. And we all know about what Providence just did….

  34. valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 24, 2013 at 3:12 PM
