Couture accuses Kings captain Brown of diving

May 23, 2013, 12:56 PM EDT

San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture says Dustin Brown is guilty of embellishment.

Couture accused the Kings captain of diving during San Jose’s 2-1 win in Game 4 on Tuesday, and chalked it up to Brown’s preferred style of play.

“[Brown] saw me. I wasn’t looking, he saw me and hit me, and dove after the hit to make it look like he ran into me,” Couture told CSN Bay Area. “That’s the way he plays.”

Here’s the incident in question, which occurred early in the second period:

There was no penalty on the play, but it was indicative of the tremendously physical affair. The two teams combined for 89 hits — 53 of them coming from the Kings.

Is it really an accusation when everyone knows he’s a diver?

  2. soro17 - May 23, 2013 at 1:05 PM

    Kevin Bieksa agrees.

  3. pirovash88 - May 23, 2013 at 1:06 PM

Says the guy who elbowed brown in the face after he scored in game 2.. Whiner.

    • lovinthatsomanyhateonnd - May 23, 2013 at 1:13 PM

lmao and that punk brown elbowed a Sharks player in the face after the whistle blew not long after…im surprised he wasnt suspended for his intentional knee on knee hit against the Blues..cheap shot brown is what i call him..kid is as dirty as they come

  4. micklethepickle - May 23, 2013 at 1:07 PM

I can’t stand Richards. I think it’s his whining, cheap shots, and his annoying lisp. You’re rich! Hire a G-D speech therapist!

    • micklethepickle - May 23, 2013 at 1:08 PM

D’oh! That’s what I get for reading two articles about Brad Richards before commenting on this one.

    • jprosk - May 23, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Whining? Seems to me like Couture is the one whining. Dustin Brown got right up after the collision and kept playing I don’t know how that can be called embellishment. Dustin Brown never whines if anything Doughty does Dustin Brown didn’t say a word last year after he got slashed by Mike Smith he just plays.

      • joelwrobinson - May 23, 2013 at 1:38 PM

He was saying Brown intentionally hit him and tried to make it look accidental.

      • jprosk - May 23, 2013 at 2:29 PM

If you watch the replay you can literally see Couture turn right into him and you can even see Brown turn his skate and body away from Couture to try and get around.

      • malkamania71 - May 23, 2013 at 5:28 PM

I wouldn’t say Couture is whining here. I listened to the interview and PHT kinda exaggerated the title. He was kind of just explaining what happened on the play. I am a fan of dustin brown and the way he plays even if it is chippy. Fun to watch

  6. stakex - May 23, 2013 at 1:11 PM

The two guys ran into eachother…. I don’t really see the dive on that play.

With all the diving going on in these playoffs, this seems like a really bad example.

  7. loinstache - May 23, 2013 at 1:13 PM

OK I’ve always been on the Dustin Brown hate bandwagon but come on, this is rich coming from Couture after the theatrics he and the Sharks have shown this playoffs. Did anyone else see the ref make the “dive” gesture jokingly to the kings bench regarding Galiardi in the second period of game 4? TSN/ even did a short bit in it

    • shoobiedoobin - May 23, 2013 at 1:18 PM

I saw that but man, it ain’t just THIS playoffs. In 2010 it was probably the worst display of diving and flopping I’ve ever seen in one series and I’ve been watching this sport over 3 decades. Thornton would’ve hit the ice if a sock full of hair touched him. The whole team was laying on the ice to the point where it was becoming obvious to everyone but the refs who kept buying it. I think there’s less pity now that they milked it so badly early on (to no avail, thankfully because those turds deserve nothing).

  8. elvispocomo - May 23, 2013 at 1:13 PM

What’s that, a Shark whining about diving? Fitting.

    • lovinthatsomanyhateonnd - May 23, 2013 at 1:16 PM

lol well brown, and the rest of the kings for that matter, are a bunch of floppers that make Ginobli look like a rookie at it…they embellish to get calls quite often…

      • elvispocomo - May 23, 2013 at 1:21 PM

I can agree about Brown, who’s one of the worst (or best depending on how you look at it) divers in the league and gets away with a lot of dirty play. They’re good at what they do otherwise as well, but it just furthers my point that all teams do this kind of thing and aren’t immune to complaining about it either.

      • shoobiedoobin - May 23, 2013 at 1:31 PM

^Some teams don’t. I’ve noticed diving and flopping is mostly a western conference thing. SJ, Vancouver, LA, Edmonton, Anaheim, Chicago, all are a bunch of divers. Sure the east has Pittsburgh and Montreal but for the most part it’s a grittier, tougher, less flop-prone conference. Notice the diving teams are coached by douchebags or slimeballs who would do anything to win? While the team who don’t dive are lead by coaches who aren’t like that? You’re a reflection of your coach, every time.

  9. shoobiedoobin - May 23, 2013 at 1:15 PM

    Dustin Brown dives.

HOWEVER…Logan Couture and most of his team dive just as much. So shut up.

    • lovinthatsomanyhateonnd - May 23, 2013 at 1:16 PM

lol the kings rain supreme when it comes to flops.

      • jprosk - May 23, 2013 at 1:28 PM

Ever heard of the Canucks or Penguins?

      • jdlinder11 - May 23, 2013 at 1:48 PM

bruins and canadiens are the worst IMO, especially when they play each other

      • lostpuppysyndrome - May 23, 2013 at 1:48 PM

Rain supreme? Is that rain with sour cream?

  10. sjsharks66 - May 23, 2013 at 1:32 PM

    Shut up Couture.
I would not say all the Sharks dive, because that is just not true. However Couture is doing it quiet a bit. Im not liking that at all.

We can all agree Brown is a POS and anything dirty that happens to him, like the “elbow after a goal” which only 2 kings fans saw, no one will feel bad about it.

    • hrudey - May 23, 2013 at 2:17 PM

I wouldn’t with an elbow to the face on Todd freaking Bertuzzi, who is the reigning Overlord for life of the POS club, though Raffi Torres is trying to take that position away. Brown plays on the edges and occasionally goes over, much like probably 100 skaters in the league, and dives from time to time, much like probably 100 skaters in the league. He’s also a pretty lousy skater so many times he ends up on his side or back with nobody near him not looking to draw a penalty but because he just fell down again.

Every team has guys like that on their roster, and for fans of the other 29 teams they’re a POS. Those of us who are Kings fans will love the guy, and those who aren’t will naturally hate him. I’m disappointed that Couture would denigrate himself by saying something stupid like this, and if he has the misfortune that Penner did after running his fool mouth after game three I certainly wouldn’t mind. ;)

  11. kingsfan93 - May 23, 2013 at 1:33 PM

For any of you that talk about D. Brown being a whiner don’t know what you are talking about He is actually a hard working player that set the example of what it takes to win the cup. He may dive, but that is it.

    • jprosk - May 23, 2013 at 1:35 PM

Totally agree.. he got right up after the hit and kept playing he never whines

    • rrino - May 23, 2013 at 3:53 PM

Ya, he only dives, thats it. He doesn’t blatantly elbow players in the face (just ask Jason Pomminville), he doesn’t throw cheap knee-on-knee hits (just ask Jaden Schwartz). Just a diver.

  12. joelwrobinson - May 23, 2013 at 1:40 PM

I can’t wait to watch the Kings and their fans cry up a storm after the sharks win the next two games.

    • pennerismyhomeboy - May 24, 2013 at 1:59 AM

      ya, that happened.

  13. babych44 - May 23, 2013 at 1:56 PM

    Pot… meet Kettle

And here I thought all the gossip girl sh*t would stop when the Habs and ‘Nucks were eliminated.

    Kettle meet pot!

  16. President Charles Logan - May 23, 2013 at 3:04 PM

sharks suck, no cups ever .. them and ottawa ought to get together and go bowling

  17. salmon90 - May 23, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Not sure what the Sharks are trying to accomplish here – they’ve gathered the momentum in the series. Why do they want to get caught up in this. You saw how much Bieksa endeared himself and the rest of the Canucks to the refs when he was complaining about diving!

  18. ibieiniid - May 23, 2013 at 4:11 PM

ok I’ll start by saying that the video is a bit grainy on my comp screen…. but is it me or did they both look right at each other a decent amount of time before they collided?

tough to call or not call a dive on that… but I’m confused as to why neither of them could move sooner. at first look, it looked like more of an interference against the Shark, but I don’t even know if I’d call that if I was in the ref’s skates.

  19. hsnepsts - May 23, 2013 at 4:31 PM

“We aren’t divers because, um, the Canucks did it 2 years ago!”

That’s all I keep hearing from supporters of other teams, and even some coaches and players.

You’ll notice that when Vigneault pointed out the Sharks diving, McLellan didn’t actually deny it – he just conveniently deflected it back onto the Canucks circa 2010.

You know, the video replays don’t lie. The Canucks earned their reputation – but they’ve (mostly) changed – and, like Patrick Kane, they deserve to be judged based on this year.

For all of you who keep bringing up the Canucks when talking about embellishing, I challenge you to base your accusations on 2012. Kesler and Burrows don’t dive anymore, and they were the worst. Raymond still goes down a little easy, I admit, but as a team the Canucks are better than most.

What really sucks is that even the league is a little slow on the uptake. Enough already. SJ embellished way more than Vancouver in the first round, but the refs still seem to be reffing based on 2010.

  20. csilojohnson - May 23, 2013 at 9:36 PM

    Pointless arguement.
As lame as it is. Diving is about as difficult to prove as intent.
So unless you have a doctorate in physics, stop whining.
