Discuss: Penguins overwhelm Senators to take Game 4

May 22, 2013, 10:15 PM EDT

OTTAWA, CANADA - MAY 22: James Neal #18 of the Pittsburgh Penguins celebrates a first period goal with teammates Pascal Dupuis #9, Sidney Crosby #87 and Craig Adams #27 against the Ottawa Senators in Game Four of the Eastern Conference Semifinals during the 2013 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, at Scotiabank Place, on May 22, 2013 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The Ottawa Senators got off to a strong start tonight due in no small part to Milan Michalek‘s impressive shorthanded goal and goaltender Craig Anderson‘s early efforts. However the Penguins claimed the lead in the second and then the floodgates opened in the third period. What started as a hard fought contest ended as a 7-3 blowout.

Pittsburgh is now one win away from taking this series going into Game 5 on Friday (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN).

Here are some notes to chew on:

  • Penguins forward James Neal had been struggling in the 2013 playoffs, but he came up big tonight with two goals and an assist.
  • Ottawa and Pittsburgh are the only teams to have netted at least two shorthanded goals in the postseason.
  • This actually marks the first game of this series that the Senators held a lead before the end of the contest.
  • Going into this game, Ottawa outscored its opponents 16-1 after 40 minutes while Pittsburgh had allowed 10 goals and scored just six beyond the second period of playoff contests. So the Penguins’ 3-2 lead going into the third period was clearly not safe, but they managed to overcome that trend tonight.
  • Daniel Alfredsson got his 100th career playoff point, but it came on an ultimately moot third-period goal.
  • Although Anderson was pulled from this game, he was great in the first period. How much of this loss was his fault?
  • Just as a fun side note: While the Penguins were overwhelming the Senators, their AHL-affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, earned a 5-0 victory over the Providence Bruins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton fought back after falling behind in that series 3-0.

Love them pens! Series has to end friday. Pens-bruins is almost guaranteed at this point. 1st period was ridiculous as pens could have (and should have) had 2-4 goals…just thankful they came through eventually.

    • tdsnbeers - May 23, 2013 at 1:51 PM

I don’t love the Pens but I do have to admit there team is probably the most stacked team I’ve ever seen in sports. There is no excuse not to be sweeping every team in the playoffs.
Crosby, Malkin, Kunitz, Neal, Iginla, Depuis, Jokinen, B Morrow, Letang, Martin. There is no way you are going to keep all these guys around salary cap reducing 6 Million.

I am a Buffalo Sabres fan, so I am jealous that you have all these undervalued stars. (Kunitz, Neal, Depuis)

      • malkamania71 - May 23, 2013 at 5:39 PM

There is no excuse to not be sweeping every team? Seriously? Who says that.. Anyone can beat anyone. Look at the 8th seeded Kings last year

  2. ironman721 - May 22, 2013 at 10:21 PM

    Great game! Let’s Go Pens🐧❗

    • mmmpierogi - May 22, 2013 at 10:31 PM

      Pittsburgh and WBS!

  3. 19to77 - May 22, 2013 at 10:22 PM

On the popular subject of officiating problems, you guys see what they decided “slashing” was in the third period? Matt Cooke and Chris Neil both got slashing minors for holding their sticks across the bodies of their opponents for a second or two. Didn’t even impede motion, much less actually slash anything. And how did Alfredsson get a penalty for Orpik dragging the stick clean out of his hands? Orpik should have gone for a 5-on-3.

    Awful, awful calls all period.

    • pitpenguinsrulez - May 22, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Boo hoo…go suck on your pacifier

      • 19to77 - May 22, 2013 at 10:32 PM

I’m cheering for the Penguins you sodding idiot. The calls were bad on both teams.

    • cheesesteak75 - May 22, 2013 at 10:29 PM

      You mad bro?

      • 19to77 - May 22, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Yep. Have been this whole postseason. Calls have been terrible on all teams, nearly every game. Getting tired of bad calls by bad refs, whether they favour my team or not.

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 23, 2013 at 8:10 AM

I’m just glad the calls are bad (and I agree they have been) on both sides. They’ve put the whistles away unless it is something obvious, but when they do that the refs leave themselves open to embellishment, which we’ve also seen.

Under the category of REAL penalties, though, I don’t ever remember seeing the Sarge play so badly! Wow…love the guy but horrible game.

      • whammy71 - May 23, 2013 at 8:30 AM

Father Time is undefeated…..age is catching up to him. But agree – great player. Amazing how his shot from the point could always seem to navigate the traffic and find the back of the net.

  4. myroncopesflask - May 22, 2013 at 10:22 PM

    myroncopesflask – May 22, 2013 at 9:30 AM

Not sure very many people realize that game 3 could have been 5 or 6-1 in favot of the Pens. It was a close game because Anderson made a ton of saves. The Pens also helped on many of those save by shooting at Anderson and getting very little traffic in front of the net. My understanding is that after that game there were some very angry players in the locker room and 3 of those angry players are among the best players in the world. IMO this game could be decided by the end of the 1st period. We shall see! 1975

    Any further questions? 1975

    • drone501 - May 23, 2013 at 7:41 AM

love the referral to 1975. keep up the good work.

    THAT was hockey game!!!!!!!!!

  6. bobhpine - May 22, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Anderson has been generally very good in this series…and he’s been pulled in two of the four games.

The Pens just have too much firepower. It’ll be over Friday.

    • tsi431 - May 23, 2013 at 7:05 AM

Let me fix this for you.

Other then Game 3 Anderson has been awful this series.

      Overall 125-139 .899%

  7. pitpenguinsrulez - May 22, 2013 at 10:26 PM

A very satisfying win tonight for the Pens. The Senators and their fans known dam well they stole game 3…this series should be over with but its not oh well. The first 20 minutes were horrid for the Pens. I was very happy to see the Neal-Malkin-Iginla line produce tonight by scoring four goals combined. And after 22 straight goalless third periods in the playoffs Sidney Crosby scores a beauty of a goal. Since I’m a very superstitious person in terms of sports I was glad that I made a jersey change in the first intermission. After the first 20 I was wearing my Iginla jersey but for the remainder of the game I wore my Darius Kasparaitis jersey.

Cant wait for Friday and as always LETS GO PENS!

  8. jobotjones - May 22, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Dupuis scores his 7th goal of the post season breaking the tie for the league lead with Crosby.
About 15 seconds later, Crosby ties his linemate once again with a terrific toe drag around the defender.

What a game these two are really pushing the pace for each other and the rest of the team.

    Continue the onslaught!
    Go Pens!

  9. cheesesteak75 - May 22, 2013 at 10:27 PM

When the Pens play focused they are unstoppable. Goalie problems? Yes, for sone teams but not for Pittsburgh!

  10. ludacrish05 - May 22, 2013 at 10:32 PM

Thank you Crosby, for showing what a leader can do on the ice.

    -caps fan #respect

    • taintedlombardis - May 22, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Crosby isn’t even needed. He would win nothing with the Caps’ roster. Dude is surrounded by talent.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - May 22, 2013 at 11:33 PM

You just don’t give up…do you?

Guess Ovechkin doesn’t have much to work with, Stupid…

  11. pizzano7416 - May 22, 2013 at 10:32 PM

Awesome awesome game.. Sens got the Pens buzz saw big time this game. It was really good to see both Iglina, and Neal get involved this game, and both getting 2 goals each!! I was getting a little worried that there confidence would start to take a hit, or they would both start to get frustrated and let the frustration f*ck up there game. Also great to see there power play work again after getting shut out last game. Looked like they were having a great time out there. Really hope they finish them off next game, so they can start focusing on the Bruins. BUTTT… Lets hope they don’t get caught looking ahead to next series and fawk up this one. One game at a time, and lets finish these Sens off!!

How bout Anderson getting pulled for the 2nd time this series. :)

  12. jaybaileys - May 22, 2013 at 10:33 PM

I guess that will just about end the Anderson is gonna steal this series talk.

When the Pens are right they are pretty much unstoppable. Even thought they were pretty good in the first and should have potted about 3 more than they did.

My prediction 6-2 Pens.. Neal with at least 2 goals and letang with 4 points.

I was a little off on the final score but close enough…

Niskanen should get suspended for his PK Subban special on Stone.

    • taintedlombardis - May 22, 2013 at 11:22 PM

He won’t. Should have been a 5 minute major. Just like Malkin wasn’t suspended in the SCF way back when, Niskanen will avoid discipline. I wonder why?

      • live4hockey - May 23, 2013 at 1:28 AM

I will be surprised if he doesn’t at least get fined. Are you like Ovi and a conspiracy theorist as well?

        Or Gonchar’s cross-check to Cooke’s head?

      Quit your whining CSI Ottawa

      • live4hockey - May 23, 2013 at 1:22 AM

I’m a Pens fan….nice try though. It was a dirty move, I hate when players slew foot. For me, it is right up there with head shots. Suspend him 1 game…we will be fine, there are plenty of defensemen that can step up and do what Niskanen does. Take off your homer glasses and look at the play for what it is…a dirty slew foot. If someone had done that to one of our guys, your be saying the same thing…Just because it’s a player from your favorite team, doesn’t make it any less dirty.

      • President Charles Logan - May 23, 2013 at 1:34 AM

pens arent my favorite team , thanks for your input though

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 23, 2013 at 8:15 AM

Body position accidents happen. A lot of crap not called in this game, we’ll call that trip one of them, but all this “off with his head” crap is just silly.

    • jpelle82 - May 23, 2013 at 9:20 AM

hardly subban like but still unnecessary. niskanen’s done it before so i’m not gonna give him a break on this one or try to defend it. for those of you who dont know what i’m talking about here it is….

      • live4hockey - May 25, 2013 at 2:18 PM

Nobody is as bad Subban…but that is my name for a slew foot…the pk subban special. my new name for a dive might be the erik karlsson…

  17. stillerspensbuccos - May 22, 2013 at 10:52 PM

That had to totally demoralize the Sens. Opening with a SH goal, then quickly taking a 2-1 lead only to watch it disappear in a 40 second span to open the 2nd.

  18. johnnyd76 - May 22, 2013 at 11:06 PM

PENS did a great job tonight. Finally had the right mix of personnel to blow a game wide open. Dan should keep the same lines and personnel for Game 5, while keeping the guys focused on good defense – especially in front of the net. Also, got to watch those shortie opportunities on the PK. Finally, need to end this series and rest up for the Bruins. GO PENS!

  19. malkinrulez - May 22, 2013 at 11:14 PM

Pens dominated time in the o-zone and the final score showed it. I expect Fridays game to be closer but end result should be the same.

  20. valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 22, 2013 at 11:42 PM

Tonight Crosby showed us that his hockey IQ is off the charts. Crazy he swung his stick across his body and laid it flat on the ice to take a pass. Crazy toe drag and back handed goal. Complete domination on face offs, great puck control and passing on the PP. He stood up for the goalie after Alfredsson whacked the goalie. Wow!

    • taintedlombardis - May 22, 2013 at 11:45 PM

Crosby was invisible most of the game. He scored when the Sens were in a daze. His teammates are awesome.

      • pizzano7416 - May 23, 2013 at 12:00 AM

Ummm.. Did you see the goal he scored?? I hope that was a joke.. It’s true his teammates are awesome though..

      • mordock57 - May 23, 2013 at 12:04 AM

The only joke here is tainted. He doesn’t care what Crosby actually does on the ice. He’ll complain and insult Crosby regardless. Some people just can’t handle when their hero doesn’t measure up to the opposition. Tainted’s hero, Ovie, didn’t last long enough this year to even be considered opposition in the first place.

      • 19to77 - May 23, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Not to mention the part where Ovechkin was outperformed by no less than five of his teammates, who tainted absolutely loves to insult at every turn. For all his vitriol about how awful the rest of the Caps are, friggin’ NINE of them had as many or more points than “The Great Eight” in the Rangers series. But hey, facts are dumb, right? Ovechkin is a hero surrounded by incompetent players… that somehow outperformed him in the clutch.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - May 23, 2013 at 12:46 AM

Tainted the only thing that is invisible is the Crapitals in the playoffs currently. Funny how Crosby had a lot of great chances in the game and helped set up Neal on his power play goal. Much like Eiggles you let your hatred and stupidity get the best of you when going after the pens specifically Crosby.

    • mordock57 - May 23, 2013 at 1:59 AM

Sane, perhaps, but intelligent is a pretty strong word. 😉

you have verbal diarrhea, nothing but sh!t comes out.

  25. myroncopesflask - May 23, 2013 at 1:29 AM

This might sound a little his crazy but most of game 3 looked like this game. The Sens have been pushed around for all but 20-25 minutes this entire series. I was mocked when I said the Pens had too much speed for the Sens. Some mouth breather Flyers fans talked about the Sens youth and wonder boy Karlsson. The Sens have some pretty old dogs on their team and rely on those old dogs for most of their production. Karlsson only factored in this series in bad ways, hell this Norris winner is not even on the PK most of the time?

I have said it since game 5 of the Islanders series. There are two teams that have a “chance” at beating the Pens in 4 of 7 games. One of them looks like they might be outed by the Wings. The other…The Kings. The Hawks have the depth to match the Pens and the Kings have the size to make life tough on Sid and Letang.
It does not matter who wins the NY-Bos series either of those team will get boat raced by the Pens. I’m hoping the Hawks and Pens make it to the finals. IMO that would be the best series I have seen since the Wings vs Avs when Claude Lemieux disfigured Chris Draper. 1975

  26. myroncopesflask - May 23, 2013 at 1:30 AM

Anybody know the score of the Flyers game tonight? Oh wait.. 1975

    • katieelizabeth2003 - May 23, 2013 at 7:53 AM

I find it humorous that the only Flyers mentioning has been from your last post and then the response by you to said post. Therefore you made your own segway into talking crap? The Flyers didn’t make the playoffs. We get it. Does it make you feel better to make the same statement about 1975 or the “score of the Flyers game tonight” that has been said by quite a few people already on many different articles this post season? It’s not original so the resounding choruses of “Burrrrrrrrrn” you hear in your own head are a little sad.
This was a great hockey game, and though I know the Pens will take the series, I’m hoping for a Boston win next series. Why? Because I have been a Flyers fan since I was 10 and it’s just natural. I’m not one of those clowns that wish injury on the team, nor am I in denial about how good the Pens are. I enjoy the rivalry and will continue to root for anyone playing the Pens, in the least hateful way possible. I’m mature. It sucks…

  28. 8man - May 23, 2013 at 7:49 AM

Pens to strong for the Sens. Maybe for anyone. Lineup is explosive. Not sure either the Bruins or the Rangers would fare much better than Ottawa.

  29. whammy71 - May 23, 2013 at 8:38 AM

I’m surprised there are so many comments in this thread……cause there is nothing to discuss. Pens own the Sens…..Crosby is the greatest player in the world…..parade is still on schedule……and the Flyers still suck!

Bring on the Bruins….and in the immortal words of Bart Scott – “CAN’T WAIT!!!”

Bs don’t have the O to keep up for 7 games! And they aren’t winning four games 2-1.

    • katieelizabeth2003 - May 23, 2013 at 9:17 AM

Again, this series has nothing to do with the Flyers. Congrats on your boys making it this time when they couldn’t get past the sucky flyers in the first round of playoffs last year. Also, yes..they didn’t make it to playoffs for the first time in a long time this year, but they will come back. You can’t argue that even without a cup since ’75, the Flyers haven’t been a force in playoffs in the past 10 years. They have. It’s fact. And next year, because I’m not a bandwagon fan, I will be rooting my heart out for them to do better. Because as a hockey fan, that’s what you do.

      • whammy71 - May 23, 2013 at 10:22 AM

It’s has everything to do with the Cryers (see – your a typical Cryer fan…..crying away).

It’s called a rivalry, and it may be unmatched in the NHL and one of the strongest in North American sports. Yinz hate us and we hate you. It’s very simple. I guess you just ignore the fact that all season long Philly-tools would wonder into Penguin threads and rant about Cindy this and Cindy that. When in fact your own ginger Captain can’t handle the heat without an almost washed up ex-Penguin on his wing… ironic. Have fun golfing!

By the way, if you wanna see how cool a Stanley Cup parade is….let me know. They’ll be one in Pittsburgh in early July at the latest. I’ll save you a seat….cause that’s what hockey fans do.

      • katieelizabeth2003 - May 23, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Since there weren’t any Flyers fans crying about anything on this comment thread for this article, I’m going to have to disagree with your statement. ( And before you say that I, in fact, was crying over anything, please reread my comments). My point was that the Flyers were brought up for no reason other than to try and be oh so clever with sh*t talking when they aren’t even part of this game/series/playoffs. Technically, that is actually the same thing you accuse “Philly-tools” of doing. Some fans are idiots. That goes for ANY team. (I say some because in no way have I shown any immaturity in my posts, nor name calling in the form of your idol captain unlike you and your Cryers comment that was just adorable). Keep thumbing me down. I actually don’t care. I said it upthread and I’ll say it again, the Pens are talented. It was a good series for them and even with the rivalry, I have very good friends who are Pens fans. We banter back and forth, we watch games together when they play eachother, we root against the other ones teams, and then drink a couple beers and enjoy a good laugh after. It’s called being grown ups. Not that you’ll care, but the only negative I DID say was that I would root against them which is kind of what people do in sports…they root for their team and root against teams they don’t like. There are fans that give my team a bad name and you give yours one.

  34. tdsnbeers - May 23, 2013 at 2:02 PM

Penguins fans are terible, just be happy that you have the most stacked team in the NHL and shut up. you got lucky that you sucked for 8 years straight and got 3 consecutive 1st/2nd overalls. Those players attract other players like being able to acquire Neal, Iginla, Morrow, etc..

The fact that you are sitting here bragging is insane

    • pizzano7416 - May 23, 2013 at 9:26 PM

O shut up tdsnbeers… Have you not watched the past couple years, what happened to the Pens. You never know with playoff hockey what’s gonna happen. If you were a real NHL fan you would know this. Don’t get on us for getting excited our team hung 7 goals to take a 3-1 lead. Go pay attention to whatever team you like. (Prob not in playoffs) Don’t get on us for getting excited that the Pens are doing what they are supposed to so far. Notice I said so far.

  35. pizzano7416 - May 23, 2013 at 9:28 PM

And all those players you mentioned came in trades you idiot. None of them were FAs who decided where to go..Iginla was the only one who kinda picked the Pens, but he only had a choice between 2 teams, Pens and Bruins..
