Video: No Christmas card exchanges for Red Wings, ‘Hawks

May 20, 2013, 11:03 PM EDT

Every now and then, post-game interviews justify their often-criticized existences when someone says an inflammatory or funny thing.

Detroit Red Wings forward Dan Cleary‘s amazing red beard was reason enough to soak in what he had to say, but his amusing “no Christmas cards” quip made it a rare treat. He’s talking about his rivalry with Bryan Bickell specifically, yet it could probably fit Detroit’s second-round series against the Chicago Blackhawks overall:

As much as Pierre can annoy and frustrate fans……that’s a great f’n interview…Pierre is a monster!

    • kendog1 - May 20, 2013 at 11:50 PM

Pierre can actually be pretty good when he’s not trying to kiss the rear end of Emryk and Olkzyk ( who by the way is the WORST homer of recent announcing history )

      • bensawesomeness - May 21, 2013 at 1:00 AM

If memory serves, Emryk is a Wings fan, and Olkzyk is a Hawks fan

that being said, i agree with you

        If memory serves… or google.

Emryk was the play-by-play announcer for the Devils until 2011.

I disagree, I think Emryk is one of the best play by play announcers that shows no bias either way. He was Flyers play by play announcer for years while being a Devils fan and you could never tell.

What a way to end a rivalry.

  3. jeffchadwick - May 21, 2013 at 8:40 AM

I think Pierre makes it a point to balance out the blatant Olcyzk homerism.

    • shoobiedoobin - May 21, 2013 at 12:48 PM

^This. Olczyk is a Chicago lover and doesn’t even try to hide it. What a honk.

Bickell is a tantrum tosser. Take a loss like a man. This is classic Detroit hockey-frustrate them by not being dirty, and just being better.

  4. shoobiedoobin - May 21, 2013 at 12:50 PM

And Pierre gets made fun of because he’s an easy target. But if you look past that, he’s a decent human being and a brilliant hockey mind, much moreso than anyone making fun of him. We need more of him in this league, the type who ignores sensationalism and just loves the purity of the sport. No bias, just enthusiasm.

    • imleftcoast - May 21, 2013 at 2:52 PM

They put him in a glass box where he almost gets hit nightly, and he looks like Mr. Peanut. I like his enthusiasm, he’s only a ‘brilliant hockey mind’ relative to the other pinheads on NBC (and Ron McLean who can kiss my ash).

      • shoobiedoobin - May 21, 2013 at 3:04 PM

No, he’s a brilliant hockey mind, period. He can pick up on little things no one else on TV can. Your personal opinion of him, including what he looks like (irrelevant) means nothing.

Anyone claiming he’s not one of the smartest hockey guys around is either just part of the peanut gallery who make fun of him for high school bully-like reasons, or they just can’t see what he sees. Period.

      • imleftcoast - May 21, 2013 at 5:00 PM

I must be a brilliant hockey mind then because Pierre seems to point out the blatantly obvious: what was the turning point, you and Bickell have a rivalry, what are the keys to the series. I like the guy’s enthusiasm, but he’s not brilliant.

      • shoobiedoobin - May 21, 2013 at 6:34 PM

He picks out much, MUCH more than that, you’re ignoring a hell of a lot. Likely because you just don’t see it and don’t listen.

  5. hsnepsts - May 21, 2013 at 4:36 PM

Pierre is the worst, him and Ferraro. just endless monologuing about numbers, stats, butt kissing and pointing out the obvious. There’s no narrative, no filter, no humour, no eloquence. They might as well be teaching remedial math. These guys have to learn to speak less and say more.

Man I miss Harry Neale. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but he actually spoke like someone who speaks for a living, rather than these guys who just race to dictate every factoid that enters their mind.

If I could thumbs down this 10 times I would. If you’re the same snepts from LGW, you’re a dope and this doesn’t shock me.
