Video: Raffi Torres checks Robyn Regehr

May 14, 2013, 11:30 PM EDT

Raffi Torres might score the occasional overtime game-winning goal, but that’s not why the San Jose Sharks traded for him. Instead, they’re hoping that he’ll make them a “tougher team to play against,” which usually means clobbering opponents when he’s on the ice.

Torres, 31, showed that he isn’t shy about doing just that early in Game 1 against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, as he delivered a hard hit on Robyn Regehr in the opening frame:

I wish the sharks would wake up and screen quick. Letting him watch you wind up for a shot is not going to get past him.

That dirt-bag Torres just went to the box for targeting the head. With his history a suspension is possible. Looks like the Kings are starting to frustrate the Sharks into taking stupid penalties.

That was not to the head. If anything it was interference. Torres is like the Cooke of the west. Anything he does they jump to it being “dirty”.

Shoulder to the head. That’s why the penalty was for charging. And Torres might have cleaned his act up lately, but he’s been suspended for illegal hits before so he gets the microscope treatment.

Im not even defending it because i am a sharks fan. As a hockey fan i honestly think that was on the shoulder.

You’re right, it was Torres’ shoulder to Stoll’s head.

Firstly, it wasn’t Stoll, it was regher. Secondly, there was no contact with his head. Thirdly, it was charging because he took more than three strides to hit him. You can still have a charging penalty without someone’s head being targeted, or someone leaving the ice to deliver a hit

You’re right in that this article is about an early hit Torres put on Regehr, but we’re talking about the penalty Torres got for charging Stoll.
