2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs: PHT’s Round 2 picks

May 14, 2013, 11:16 AM EDT

2013 playoffs

PHT staffers — myself (Mike Halford), Jason Brough, Joe Yerdon, James O’Brien, Ryan Dadoun and Cam Tucker — did reasonably well with their picks in the opening round.

Well, everybody but me did reasonably well:

Halford: 3-5
Brough: 7-1
Yerdon: 5-3
O’Brien: 6-2
Dadoun: 6-2
Tucker: 5-3

Brough was the overall winner winner chicken dinner, Dadoun was the only staffer to pick San Jose over Vancouver and Yerdon was on the money by taking the ‘Hawks in 5, Red Wings in 7, Kings in 6, Penguins in 6 and Rangers in 7.

As for the commenters? The best shout came from “Raleik,” the only person to correctly predict a quick exit for the Canucks (picked the Sharks in 5).

Onto Round 2 we go…

    Flenators. Blackhawks bruins kings

    • bgrillz - May 14, 2013 at 11:44 AM

No way…you picked against the Pens. Shocker!

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 14, 2013 at 11:50 AM

Not picking against any team these are the team iam rooting for to move on

    • imleftcoast - May 14, 2013 at 12:40 PM

Senators in 7, Hawks in 5, Boston in 6, LA in 6

  2. tfaltin - May 14, 2013 at 11:36 AM

^ 7 for 8, just missed the Kings.

Hawks in 6 – Skill at every position

Sharks in 6 – Just because I havent learned my lesson about picking against the Kings yet, and Logan Couture is impressive

Penguins in 7 – Pitt was exposed a bit by the Islanders, and they’ll have to play a completely different kind of game against the Senators. The Sens style, and question in the Pitt net gives the Sens a couple games

Rangers in 6 – Get the ice bags ready. I like the matchups from the Rangers side. Henrik makes a save or two more than Rask.

    • polegojim - May 14, 2013 at 4:42 PM

I love being the underdog… just like against the Ducks

Wings will give them a scare, maybe even… Wings in 7

Sens are going to bomb Pens goalies… I see an upset. Sens in 6

      Go RED WINGS!

  3. villi5ed - May 14, 2013 at 11:37 AM

Amazed no one took a flier on the Sens. Crosby and Malkin are unquestionably the best players in the series, but speedy forwards vs. a slow defensive corps and Anderson vs. Vokoun or Fleury is hard to ignore.

    • sjshark714 - May 14, 2013 at 11:59 AM

its not just that series… these have to be the least imaginative picks I have ever seen. everyone just picking the favorites, with the only exception being in the series that has 2 favorites in it. None of these series’ are lop-sided enough to warrant NO picks for one of the teams. Have some creativity PHT.

    • jpelle82 - May 14, 2013 at 12:07 PM

anderson had a .919 Sv % and allowed 5 goals against the pens in 2 games. below his season average but one of those games the pens won in a shootout 2-1 where he had a .971 sv %. i’m not expecting an overwhelmingly offensive assault from the senators. i’d like to believe the pens can overwhelm them offensively with matchups but the key will be special teams, pens pp vs sens pk.

      • jpelle82 - May 14, 2013 at 12:15 PM

thought anderson was hurt for one of those games but he did play all 3 against the pens…stats are worse… .904 and 8 goals against in 3 games not 2 – all 3 wins by the pens. still doesnt mean jack since its the playoffs but i guess the pens shouldnt be too worried about scoring on anderson as they have done it recently.

  4. sjsharks86 - May 14, 2013 at 11:54 AM

    Sens in 7
    Bruins in 6
    Sharks in 5
    ‘Hawks in 5.

    • aso513 - May 14, 2013 at 12:40 PM

Dopey picks but not at all surprised.

You should be more biased and bitter man.

  5. bensawesomeness - May 14, 2013 at 12:04 PM

No one cares about your picks…

    • devilsarethebest - May 14, 2013 at 12:32 PM

Clearly someone does as Halford geve them a shout out.

      • comeonnowguys - May 14, 2013 at 3:23 PM

It’s unfair of you to expect him to read the article before he goes strong with the snark.

  9. devilsarethebest - May 14, 2013 at 12:31 PM

    Bruins in 6
    Sens in 7
    Blackhawks in 5
    Sharks in 6

  10. tdsnbeers - May 14, 2013 at 12:41 PM

    Hawks in 6
    Sharks in 7
    Sens in 7
Bruins in 7 (get the ice bags out)

  11. btlpper68 - May 14, 2013 at 12:48 PM

Keep picking against the sharks …

    • comeonnowguys - May 14, 2013 at 3:24 PM

      Done.

  12. 49faithful - May 14, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Considering you can’t even get the kings 5th spot right I will stick with the Sharks

  13. valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 14, 2013 at 12:58 PM

I don’t expect the Bruins to beat the Rangers. Rangers are one of the hardest teams to play against in the playoffs, and the Bs looked dog tired last night. Charra looked like a rag doll. He played something like 30 minutes before the game was over. Ouch! Plus they are hurting with injuries on the blue line. Pens, Kings, Hawks are sound choices.

  14. aso513 - May 14, 2013 at 1:13 PM

Loving all the people jumping off the Pens, don’t be surprised to get better as the playoffs go on.

  15. sjsblitz - May 14, 2013 at 1:25 PM

    Sens in 7
    Boston in 6

  16. hockeydon10 - May 14, 2013 at 1:26 PM

    Sens in 7
    Bruins in 6
    Wings in 6
    Sharks in 7

  17. sjsblitz - May 14, 2013 at 1:26 PM

    Sens in 7
    Boston in 6
    Sharks in 6
And I believe Detroit is going to shock the world in game 7

    • pittsburghfan71 - May 14, 2013 at 2:28 PM

You have a better chance at going 0-4 in your predictions than 4-0.

Penguins in 6 – Sens are going to give the Pens too many powerplays trying to get even with Matt Cooke

Rangers in 5 – Boston barely limped in and they wont be able to keep up with the Rangers

Chicago in 4 – Redwings got lucky to have even made it into the playoffs. They were riding the 8th seed till the last week or 2. They could steal a game but Chicago moves on.

Kings in 6 – I like the Sharks but history repeats itself, thats why the Canucks flopped and its time for the annual San Jose style collapse that we are all so use to.

  18. dropthepuckeh - May 14, 2013 at 1:38 PM

Laughable that none of you could see Vancouver losing in the first round. I’m guessing nobody picked Ottawa to win either?

  19. 8man - May 14, 2013 at 2:06 PM

Still no love or respect for Ottawa. There will be….

Sens, Bs, Hawk and Sharks. Each series goes until someone wins 4. :)

  20. ballistictrajectory - May 14, 2013 at 2:22 PM

    Bruins in 7
    Senators in 7
    Hawks in 6
Kings in about an hour and a half. (6)

  21. hockeyknowledge - May 14, 2013 at 3:28 PM

I would be suprised if the Wings/Hawks series doesn’t go to 7 games. Since this a rivalry the Red Wings will play their best, and I expect the same from the Blackhawks. The true question, however, will be the will to win.

  22. raleik - May 14, 2013 at 4:13 PM

    Hawks in 6
    Sharks in 7
    Senators in 7
    Bruins in 7

Lets see if I can do as well this round as I did last round! Expecting a lot of long series this go around.

  23. cpinct - May 14, 2013 at 4:50 PM

I have no idea who will win these series, but I can guarantee it will be some exciting stuff to watch. LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!

  24. 19to77 - May 14, 2013 at 5:47 PM

‘Hawks in 6, Kings in 6, Pens in 6, Rangers in 7.

  25. kingsfan68 - May 14, 2013 at 6:10 PM

Kings in 6, Hawks in 6, Bruins in 7, pens in 5

  26. dtownbeatdown - May 14, 2013 at 6:34 PM

    Pens in 4

    NYR in 6

    Sharks in 7

DETROIT IN 4! (Yea I am bias, and a little off my rocker, a man can dream.)

I do think there will at least be one team that sweeps, unfortunately it is my least favorite team.

  27. chanceoffleury1 - May 15, 2013 at 2:03 AM

    Detroit in 7
    Kings in 6
    Pens in 5
    Boston in 7
