Capitals won’t get Laich, Erat back tonight

May 13, 2013, 7:01 PM EDT

The Washington Capitals will have to make do without some reinforcements tonight.

Forwards Martin Erat and Brooks Laich are both unavailable for Game 7 against the New York Rangers, according to

Laich, 29, is dealing with a groin injury and hasn’t played in the Capitals’ first-round series. He only participated in nine contests during the regular season, but he’s typically a solid source of secondary scoring for Washington when he’s healthy.

Erat, 31, was hurt in a collision involving Alex Ovechkin and the Rangers’ Derek Stepan in Game 4 and he hasn’t played since.

Erat had five goals and 24 points in 45 games between the Capitals and Nashville Predators during the regular season.

Tough to play without two top-6 forwards, but can’t make excuses, boys. Gotta get after them early and hope the zebras don’t determine the game. LGC, FNY.

Both are 3-time 20 goal scorers…yes, they are top-6 forwards.

Mike had it right. It was a penalty against Olvechkin in the first period. After officiating for 15 years I would have taken this further. A double minor for charging. Blood was apparent after the hit and there was a degree of violence in the hit. I wouldn’t think it was an attempt to injure penalty so it wasn’t a major. Call double minor for charging.
