Video: Crosby, Tavares duel in Game 5

May 9, 2013, 9:00 PM EDT

Hockey is a team sport, but it’s still fun to look at playoff series as battles between big stars. That’s especially true when marquee talents deliver.

John Tavares and Sidney Crosby have already produced some jaw-dropping moments in Game 5. As you can see in this video, Tavares beat Paul Martin but couldn’t best Tomas Vokoun on a dazzling play:

Later on in the second period, Crosby split the Islanders defense for a goal that might just silence people who are worried that the Penguins star isn’t quite right:

Maybe Crosby really isn’t 100 percent, but it’s clear that he can still be a game-breaker. Tavares isn’t half-bad either.

Exactly thank you for proving me right. Now wipe the drool running out of your mouth and use your hand to close your mouth.

      • pens5829 - May 9, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Past your bedtime again. Turn off mom’s computer and don’t have nightmare of 87 barreling down the ice…

  2. hockeywithdrawal - May 9, 2013 at 9:14 PM

    Mr. Shanahan….

Please tell us what a penalty is again? What’s clean, what’s not? How is Crankshaft’s hit in the 3rd a penalty?

    Sincerely,

Anyone Who Knows Jack About Hockey…Or Thought They Did…

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 9, 2013 at 9:17 PM

Scratch that! I thought they called an illegal hit…didn’t realize it was an interference call…looked like he had the puck to me! Maybe I don’t know Jack….

      • hockeywithdrawal - May 9, 2013 at 9:22 PM

I do know it’s the second time this series the idiots on the NYI bench decided to start with the boys on the ice though – need to start tossing that sh*t. No place in hockey at ALL.

    • handsofsweed - May 9, 2013 at 9:19 PM

That interference call was terrible. Murray hit him at the exact same time he got the puck and then took it from him on the bounce. That play was a perfect example of what ISN’T interference.

    • steelpenbucs87 - May 10, 2013 at 9:09 AM

All be honest I thought that was a terrible call on interference – whether or not the puck arrived on time or not.

With that said, I thought the Martin-on-Martin roughing was a bit ticky-tack as well. The fact that they called them both means at least for that period they were consistent (even if they were consistently bad)

  3. eigglesnosuperbowls - May 9, 2013 at 9:21 PM

    I don’t like the FLYLANDERS in a game 7 but its going 7 !

  4. Stiller43 - May 9, 2013 at 9:32 PM

I cant believe TK actually came up big tonight. Acually saw him playing defense and showing effort, wtf?

  5. sjsharks66 - May 9, 2013 at 9:41 PM

Some pens fans are really blind if they think tonights efforts by TK are a rare sight. TK and Vitale should have a permanent spot on the team.

If they don’t want them, i hope Doug Wilson would pick them up.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 9, 2013 at 9:43 PM

This guy TK does he play for San Jose ?

      • sjsharks66 - May 9, 2013 at 10:16 PM

This is Pro HOCKEY talk. I talk in other articles about HOCKEY.

Not just my team. I actually watch other teams play. Not like you philly fans who think the league stops playing once a flyers game is over.

      • drone501 - May 10, 2013 at 12:03 AM

eiggle, get it together my man. don’t understand you anymore. we want the old eiggle back. the sarcastic, pittsburgh hating eiggle. next thing you know eiggle will be renting an apartment on mt washingdon.

  6. Stiller43 - May 9, 2013 at 9:46 PM

    Sjaharks,

I know youre REALLY a pens fan, and since you are, you should know TK does NOT provide defensive effort and he only has one move: skate up the right boards and take a slap shot 4 feet inside the blue line to the right side of the goalie for an easy save. Thats it.

    • sjsharks66 - May 9, 2013 at 10:14 PM

You can have all the pretty plays you want from your stars. The 4th line, that grinds players down, is what makes a difference. Your stars can dazzle through the other team if their players are sore and tired from dealing with the rowdy 4th line.

      Just sayin.

    • jpelle82 - May 10, 2013 at 9:03 AM

if he doesnt try to pull it into his skates and go around a guy, he always gets poke-checked on that move

  7. billobrienschindimple - May 9, 2013 at 10:00 PM

    @ sharks

Spot on. You need those workman guys. The great Pens teams in the 90s had Slippery Rock Joe Mullen.

    • handsofsweed - May 9, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Well geez. I’d hardly call Mullen a “workman” player. Dude scored 500 and 1,000 and is in the HOF. But the overall point is correct, though.

  8. jpelle82 - May 10, 2013 at 9:27 AM

no one wants to talk about the 2 stars dueling in the 2nd period? putting on a clinic on how to bull rush? tavares’ move was sick, deked himself out of a good shooting position though, then crosby splitting the d and smashing through hickey to score…pretty good hockey, fans got their money’s worth last night at the Consol.

  9. philly4lyfe - May 10, 2013 at 11:31 AM

that interference call was pretty bad. the last few shifts before thay call, players from both sides eere taking runs at one another. I don’t agree with it, but I got the impression that it was the refs way of trying to keep a lid on the overly rough stuff and trying to keep it from getting out of hand.

and no, not all flyers fans stop watching just because they are out.
