Video: PHT Extra – Is starting Vokoun the right call?

May 8, 2013, 6:44 PM EDT

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma confirmed that Tomas Vokoun will start in Game 5.

That was a predictable move given how bad Marc-Andre Fleury looked in Game 4, but was it the right decision?

Mike Halford and Jason Brough discuss that along with what’s next for San Jose and Vancouver after the Sharks 4-0 sweep of the Canucks.

Heck yeah! I believe he’s gone 3-0 against the islanders this season including a shutout! The reason we brought him here is so he can back up fleury especially during the playoffs , this is definitely the right call.

    I dont need a video.

    Yes, yes it is.

I actually really like him he is not a wise guy, he does have his name on the Stanley Cup in which he played great ! He’s a classy dude that just unfortunately at this time of year you have no wiggle room to get things straight and have to make the move ! What makes him a team guy is he himself knows it and is veteran enough to know they will go back to him !

that’s the kind of post i like to see eiggles!

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 8, 2013 at 8:22 PM

Well I don’t wanna get all gushy but being a flyers fan this can be the most debilitating thing that can happen ! Its almost unfair that the hockey gods let this happen ! I know you don’t wanna hear this but I would like to see Nabokov tighten up also ! I just don’t like to see bad goaltending in the playoffs and I have seen plenty ! I like the old proverbial both net minders standing on their heads and then let the chips fall where they may !

Sure Flower is struggling and Vokoun has a good record vs the Isles BUT Flower is the Pens’ #1 G and Vokoun has very little playoff experience all of which was a long time ago and none of which was against the Isles.

This move is, as much as anything, a wakeup call for the Pens roster. Byelsma is saying: “Game 1 was a gift, Games 2 & 4 you lost and Game 3 you should have lost. This Islander team could beat you even if you start playing your best hockey. It is definitely going to beat you if you don’t. If I benched Flower, I can bench you too. Get your act together!”

Nucks ownership needs to start by firing Gillis. He badly mishandled his best prospect and then had to trade him. More especially though, the Luongo mess has been a very predictable disaster. MG, of course, is responsible for that horrible contract Luongo has. IMHO, long contracts like that are foolish anyway, but if a GM is going to offer such a deal, he’d better be sure he wants to stay with that player. It took MG only about 3 years to decide he wanted to trade Luongo. He certainly should have known that the contract he signed Luongo to would make a significant return impossible.

MG has alienated Luongo. Bring in a new GM and make the first item on his agenda trading Schneider for an impact player and reaffirming Luongo as the #1 goalie.

    • 19to77 - May 8, 2013 at 8:08 PM

So if you’re Garth Snow and one of the ‘Nucks goalies comes up this summer (almost certainly Luongo, nevermind that Schneider makes a lot more sense to trade), do you swing a deal? Nabby’s solid, but as we’ve seen with aging goalies before, they can be fine one season and just plain implode in the next – plus, his performance in the first game basically threw the Pens a win, and all the games have been high-scoring with both goalies letting in softies. Who knows, the Isles could be up 3-1 with a hotter ‘tender. Do you think they need an upgrade in net?

  5. laxman1944 - May 8, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Marc’s mentally fried………he must sit and the blue line must play better and smarter.

Or the Isle. Will win this round…

  6. steelers88 - May 8, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Yeah it’s the right move. It’s getting really annoying when you write like 1 million articles on Voukoun starting over Flurey.

I hear Beach Ball Fleury is on suicide watch with Jodi Arias. This is the only chance the featherless ones have in advancing. Can’t say I’m happy about the switch from an anti Pens perspective but what the heck. Vokoun deserves a shot to see if he can step up and clean BBF’s hot steaming pile of horse crap.

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 9, 2013 at 8:58 AM

You might not even meet minimum class standards for Philadelphia. It’s a shame you’re an American.

    • miketoasty - May 9, 2013 at 10:20 AM

At least BBF as you like to call him has his name on the cup, what does Bryz have? Other than humongous big five hole?

Both goalies in this series have won two games, and Nabakov has actually allowed more goals, wouldn’t necessarily call that a “pile of horse crap”.

  8. billsboy88 - May 8, 2013 at 11:30 PM

I keep seeing people say that this series could easily be 3-1 in favor of the Isles. While I do agree with this assessment, it’s quite fair to say that this series could also easily be 3-1 in favor of the Pens. Game 2 was decided by a very weird and comparatively weak goal, the Pens could have easily won that game, but they didn’t, and here we sit.

Isles have played with great tenacity this series, you can sense their hunger to move on. Pens need to wake up and realize that they haven’t won a darn thing yet this season and need to start playing like they really want the cup, cuz right now they don’t look like a championship team. (In fact, I really doubt the pens are gonna make it to the finals this year if they even make it past this series. The defense just isn’t where it needs to be. The Gill-Scuderi pairing was hugely important to their last cup, and there is no pairing nearly as stingy as those 2 on the current roster).

Lotta playoffs left to play yet, been a fun ride so far.

@drone501 he’s a Matt Cooke when he’s himself , but now he’s calm and supportive ……..how’s he pulling a Matt Cooke on us?

Billsboy, I kind of think that the orpik Murray pairing could have that same potential as hill accuser or
