Stars pondering game at Cowboys Stadium

May 8, 2013, 11:20 AM EDT

Cowboys Stadium

All these outdoor hockey games have given the Dallas Stars an idea — what about Cowboys Stadium?

Per the Star-Telegram, Stars president Jim Lites said Tuesday that the 85,000-seat football stadium with the retractable roof — which has also hosted an NBA All-Star Game, a Manny Pacquiao fight, concerts, and more — is very much on the club’s radar.

“We could do it at the Cotton Bowl, but Cowboys Stadium makes more sense because of the cachet of the building,” Lites said. “You would do it in January or February, and open the roof. You can turn down the temperature of the ice to zero degrees.

“What we have at the time of year is not really a temperature issue, but it’s the rain. It’s seldom humid at that time of year, but it does rain.”

It wouldn’t happen next year though, said Lites. Maybe the year after.

There are already six outdoor games planned for 2014 (though only three of them have been formally announced.)

Outdoor games at retractable roof stadiums aren’t really outdoor games, if the weather outside isn’t ideal (like the rain in Vancouver in March) the roof will be closed and it will be an indoor game at a bigger venue.

The good news is with the NHL desperate to play as many as possible it’ll take away the uniqueness of it and we’ll get a game with 10,000+ empty seats which should help kill the entire idea for a few years, allowing it to become unique again.

That stadium holds 105,000 for football games….. No WAY do they even get halfway close to that for an NHL Game in Texas

I meant 10,000+ empty seats at a location that has a chance to sell out their stadium (in hockey hotbeds) in Dallas it will be so empty, it would be spectacular!

Saddest part is that if they do play at Cowboys stadium, and play against a popular team like The Red Wings, most of the stadium will be Red Wings fans.

I’m a Stars fan and even I don’t want this to happen. There’s no way in the world we’d even get close to filling that place. I would much rather Dallas play in one of these as the away team, against Minnesota at Target Field or something.

At this rate, we might as well have the Lightning host one in Raymond James stadium. We already have the pirate ship ready for when the ice melts

Why can’t they play at the Rangers stadium ? They could fill that and, based on the several they’ve done, the ones in baseball stadiums seem way more fun than the ones in football stadiums. The one in Fenway was the best sporting event I’ve ever been too (and it’s a pretty accomplished list). The one they’re proposing for Foxboro, I mean I’ll go but I don’t think it’ll be quite the same.

Washington was promised one when they agreed to go to Pit for the 2011 within 2 years. When is the commissioner going to honor that agreement?
