Nielsen: Penguins have lots of guys ‘that can’t skate with us’

The New York Islanders don’t want to be remembered as the team that held their own against the Pittsburgh Penguins, they want to be the squad that eliminates them.

Pittsburgh is up 2-1 series lead heading into tonight’s contest (7:00 p.m. ET, NBCSN), but Islanders forward Frans Nielsen feels his team has one key advantage that can push them over the top.

“We’ve felt they have a lot of guys on their team that can’t skate with us,” Nielsen said, according to ESPN.

He added, “I think when we’re moving our feet, they’ve got guys up front, on the [defense] that we can see are struggling a little bit. We’ve gotta skate with ‘em. If we stop skating, we don’t have a chance.”

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby noted that the Islanders have “probably carried the play a little bit more.” He also thinks that his team has hurt themselves by allowing too many turnovers.

The Islanders certainly came out strong in Game 3 on Sunday, but the Penguins were superb in power-play situations. Pittsburgh’s edge in special teams was the difference in that match, but if the Islanders play a more disciplined game tonight, then perhaps they can even this series.

Isles do have a lot of young fast talent, and with guys like murray and eaton on the blue line, the pens certainly arent blazing in all areas.

Good thing foot speed doesnt single handedly decide a hockey game.

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 7, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Right…if they start giving style points or calling this a figure skating contest, I’ll see his point.

  2. bcisleman - May 7, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Frans’ general points that Isles have better team speed and that he is confident Isles can win are fair but he should be careful about saying it in such a way that its good bulletin board material.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM

I disagree this is not bulletin board material ! bulletin board material would be more like saying the diving horse gets the calls !

  3. jjregan21 - May 7, 2013 at 6:04 PM

Yeah, I’m a pens fan, and watching this series I’ve been blown away by the skating of the Isles. Grabner is like greased lightning out there

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 7, 2013 at 6:17 PM

Its nice to see a pens fan post with his brain and not his heart ! Regan21 very nicely said by yourself of an opposing teams strength but expect a lot of thumbs down by pens yeahholes !

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 7, 2013 at 6:19 PM

And to the pens yeahholes this is FLYLANDER article not a pens article so we cool right !

  4. davidsmj22 - May 7, 2013 at 6:07 PM

    Go Islanders!!

  5. garyreasons55 - May 7, 2013 at 6:31 PM

Yeah. If we give the Pens bulletin board material they might acquire the entire Western Conference for game 5. The Penguins front runner fans on here are laughable. Go Islanders!!!!! If we don’t improve the PK we’re dead in the water.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 7, 2013 at 6:43 PM

What you have to expect from the refs on the pk is if the islanders keep the team from pittsburgh off the board one man down the refs will BAM ! Give them the pop up 5 on 3 to get them going !

  6. colossal87 - May 7, 2013 at 6:47 PM

Can’t help but laugh at this article. The day the islanders eliminate the Pens is the day filly wins their next cup….never! “75”

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 7, 2013 at 6:49 PM

So says the colossal yeahhole ! 2005

    • tuberippin - May 7, 2013 at 9:42 PM

2-2 series kiddo, what’s good now?

  7. steelers88 - May 7, 2013 at 6:51 PM

If the Islanders found a way to stop the Penguins Powerplay I think the Islanders win the series because they have been outplaying the Pens in 5 on 5 and basically everywhere else except for special teams.

  8. Stiller43 - May 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM

    Garyreasons55,

Frontrunners? Isles were 30th (thats dead last if ya didnt know) in attendence, averaging about 5k unsold tickets a game this year. Then they sold out their playoff games.

Isnt that the definition of front running fans?

    • pone27 - May 7, 2013 at 7:06 PM

No… It’s called fans having regained faith that hasn’t been seen in easily over a decade!!

As im sure most of the regulars on here already know, i live on the Island but have always been a Hawks fan, and I can say the electric at the coliseum is amazing!

There are plenty of reasons why the Islanders are the lowest in attendance (the colisuem is a s***hole, relocation to Brooklyn because the town of Hempstead politicians are greedy ass*****, etc.) but the fans are here, and they finally have a reason to come out.

    • tuberippin - May 7, 2013 at 9:43 PM

Totally front-running dude. It’s not like we just made the playoffs for the first time since 2007 or anything. Can’t be a significant reason why playoff tickets sold out.

  9. bgrillz - May 7, 2013 at 6:59 PM

They are indeed faster than some guys. Last time I checked this wasn’t a skills competition, and the goal is to score more goals than the other team. Seems to me Pittsburgh holds the edge where it matters. It’s good enough to win a game, maybe 2, but not a series.

  10. jacketsfan7 - May 7, 2013 at 7:12 PM

Definitely agree , were a more skilled team but were so slow , just like the red wings

  11. Stiller43 - May 7, 2013 at 7:14 PM

    Pone27,

Im not going to disagree with you. There are always tons of reasons for people not going to games, and thats why i hate when others say “oh this teams fans are front runners!!!”

Guess what, when any team stinks, theyre going to lose some fans, and theyre good, theyll gain fans. I have much respect for the rebuilding the isles are doing and understand theyll have more support now. Its obvious. However, not only should isles fans not call anyone else band wagoners when they go from dead last to sellouts when they make the playoffs, everyone should shut up about it because its true for all teams in any sport.
