The Western Conference quarter-final between the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings is now a best of three games.

The Red Wings evened the series at 2-2 with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Ducks on Monday night. Damien Brunner scored the winner at 15:10 of the first extra period.

Here are some talking points.

  • The Red Wings fell behind twice in this game, including just past the midway point of the third period. Twice they came back, before winning it in OT.
  • The Red Wings and Ducks combined for just eight penalty minutes on Monday. No line brawls, no craziness.
  • Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller made a tricky stop on Johan Franzen late in the third period, having to reach back with the glove to smother a loose puck that was precariously close to going in the net.
  • That was just minutes before Pavel Datsyuk tied the game up with a laser of a wrist shot that beat Hiller over the glove and appeared to break the water bottle.
  • Both goalies played well. Hiller made 46 saves. Jimmy Howard made 31.

some class still exists. no coaches acting like 4 years old. no players saying others embellish s the fall to the ice. if only the league all had class of selanne and detriot

    • shoobiedoobin - May 7, 2013 at 10:27 AM

Selanne is one of those players that gets away with being a douche bag. He gets away with it because he’s a long time vet and to add to that, is a good guy off the ice so when he’s a Crosby-esque baby ON the ice, we ignore it. We like our villians easy to hate and even moreso, easy to identify. We don’t like being torn and split on how to feel. Fact is Selanne is much like other players in this league-classy when afforded the opportunity. When they get competitive, and one little thing goes wrong, he’s spearing, punching defenseless guys in the back of the head, whining, crying to refs, etc.

We didn’t see it this game because Anaheim had leads all game and when they didn’t, he didn’t have time to act like a baby. He had to get off the ice.

Hiller had no chance of stopping Brunner. Gotta feel for him to get beat like that after poke checking the first opportunity. Plus his defense didn’t give him any help as neither one picked up the trailing man in that being Brunner. Didn’t watch most of this game as I watched the others so I can’t say much but I do see this series going 7 games and I think that Detriot has a legit shot at upsetting the Ducks.

Good game and Wings did some of the things they needed to. Still too many Wings turnovers in the O zone and slow play development, but the win was well earned. They never gave up and the skates kept churning and churning. They were grinding it out.

Couldn’t believe watching Lashoff take Howard our on that Ducks goal… but the hockey gods caused the same thing to happen to Hiller on Brunner’s winner.

    Let’s Go Red Wings!

Yeah I think this series is going 7. Ducks manhandled them in game 3 and then got completely outplayed tonight, especially in the 3rd and into OT. They weren’t skating and losing all the battles. I was shocked at how good Detroit came out in the 3rd. Surprised Ducks were able to survive even into the OT period. Hiller could only do so much. See what happens Wednesday night.

There were stretches of 5 on 5 where it looked like Detroit had a power play. Reminded me of the Red Wings of old.

scary fans here actually saying good things about both teams. no surprise even red wings fans are classy. so refreshing hope boston, philadlephia, montreal, ottawa, vancouver ,kings fans don’t find about this bring their negative stuff. this best series selanne favorite player. red wings first class in victory or defeat

    • gnazarov - May 7, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Don’t get me wrong, I cannot stand all the Red Wings fans I see when I go Honda Center, especially the ones who’ve never even stepped foot in the state of Michigan. That bothers me, I think of them as Yankee fan of hockey. That being said, Wings fans seem to be pretty classy, even if I do find some of them to be fake fans. Clearly not as douchey as Kings fans. And let’s not get started on Philly fan. Oh djezus!

      • dumbassgreg - May 7, 2013 at 12:47 AM

lmao try reading some of the stuff ottawa, montreal or . you think were they watching the game i was. some of these people are taking this game way too serious lmao

      • manchestermiracle - May 7, 2013 at 12:48 AM

Kings win one Cup and their fans are “douchey?” It’s nice to finally be in elite company with all those other Cup-winning “douchey” fans. Thanks.

    • manchestermiracle - May 7, 2013 at 12:51 AM

d.a.g.- I’d like to supply a rebuttal to your constant blanket assumptions about other teams’ fans, but it’d be unfair trying to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

      • dumbassgreg - May 7, 2013 at 1:15 AM

d-oh negative people found knew it could not last. time for the name calling to start lmao.

As a hawks fan, it is not very often I find myself rooting for Detroit, however, I guess I have found respect for the type of game they play. Good luck Red Wings.

    • dtownbeatdown - May 7, 2013 at 1:38 AM

I hate the Hawks, but always respect a solid hockey fan. I will definitely miss the Chicago/Detroit rivalry next year more then anything. Here’s to a chance of meeting in the cup finals hopefully in the new NHL re alignment one day.

      • r8rbhawk - May 7, 2013 at 1:45 AM

I guess the other good news if Detroit pulls this off, they will face Chicago in the next round, that would be a helluva series.

  7. dtownbeatdown - May 7, 2013 at 1:32 AM

For as far as I can remember starting to watch hockey with my father when I was 5ish the wings have never missed the playoffs. Pretty amazing and pretty lucky to be a hockey fan in this town. That being said I was at the game tonight and it was just really good stuff out there, both ways. Reminded me of the late 90s red wings. Almost 50 shots and 40 hits from the Wings… Any true hockey fan could appreciate this game tonight. Not going to lie didn’t expect to be here this year but if we steal this series we might just shock the hockey universe…

Great game by the Wings. Slightly disappointed the highlights did not include Palmieri getting Kronwalled……

    • bensawesomeness - May 7, 2013 at 11:38 AM

That was one of the highlights of the whole freaking game! I’m upset it’s not on here at all

  9. clefty1 - May 7, 2013 at 11:21 AM

An entertaining game to watch. The Wings really stepped up in the 3rd period and overtime, Datsyuk let a wicked wrist shot go to tie the game, Brunner ended up getting redemption on the winning goal and Howard made some great saves to keep the Wings in the game.
