Will Bourque’s elbow on Conacher get him suspended?

May 5, 2013, 10:25 PM EDT

Alright, folks, you know what to do. Take a look at this Rene Bourque elbow on Ottawa’s Cory Conacher and play NHL disciplinarian in the comments section.
P.K. Subban vs Kyle Turris hockey fight . + Bourque/Conacher incident. May 5, 2013 - Created at

A couple of things worth noting:

—- Boston’s Andrew Ference was given a one-game suspension for “recklessly targeting” Mikhail Grabovski‘s head in the Bruins-Leafs series. Was this elbow as “principal” in its point of contact?

—- Bourque has a history, as he was given fives games for elbowing Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom last January.

3 game minimum, thats extremely intentional. Since he has a history id prefer to see 4-6 games but shannahammer will puss out and give him 3.

    • windmiller4 - May 5, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Then again, now that i rewatch that clip, since theres no blood it wouldn’t surprise me if theres no suspension. Frickin shanny

    • tycobbfromfangraphs - May 5, 2013 at 11:03 PM

Emphasis on extremely and intentional, it’s just blatant as it gets.

    • stakex - May 5, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Not a chance he will get 3 playoff games for that, and its probably not even worth 3 regular season games with no injury.

      • windmiller4 - May 5, 2013 at 11:28 PM

Too each is his own, but when you have guys like Burish saying hed gladly take a suspension to cheap shot a player, then seeing someone with history come in and blatantly target the head, he needs to be suspended, and a message needs to be sent. Im a kings fan and think Browns hit on Pommenville was very cheap and intentional, also i feel as though brown and bourque both made similar plays, although there may have been more intention in bourques hit. If Brown gets two games with no history (yes i know he’s still dirty) then Bourque should be looking at a 3 game minimum, and probably a 5 game max, although he wont get suspended that long, he should because shannahan needs to send a message that we dont need this recklessness anymore

Which is stupid, punish the action not the result! If the NHL were serious about getting head shots out of the game they’d start at a minimum of 5 games and work their way up based on how vicious and premeditated it was, but whether or not the recipient of the cheap shot was injured shouldn’t come into play. Also get rid of the “1 playoff. Game is equal to 3 regular season games” crap, if it’s 7 games in the regular season then it’s 7 games in the playoffs, you shouldn’t get away with stupid things just because your team was successful.

Unfortunately the NHL would rather look tough on crime rather than actually being so, if there’s no real injury and they don’t think the hit will get much airtime in the US then they’ll just sweep it under the rug. I’ve also heard that Shanahan is scared of players appealing to the independent review and making him look bad so he’s making HS decisions based on that.

I heard Bourque say to Conacher “Hey come here bro, there’s some mustard on your cheek, let me get it off” Conacher then skated away after and said “thanks for looking out, that would have been embarrassing”

      No suspension.

    • 950003cups - May 6, 2013 at 10:37 AM

People need to stop getting their panties all ruffled up. It wasn’t like Bourque came at him full speed and launched himself. That elbow was softer than a punch to the head. You’re all a bunch of pansies

    • rootbeerjem - May 6, 2013 at 3:44 PM

….looks like the head was the first point of contact….maybe I need to watch the looping clip above again….

      …Yup…head was hit first…what a joke….

Does anyone happen to have Brendan Shanahan’s e-mail address…maybe he hasn’t seen the clip..

It should be a suspension, tho not as bad as Frerence or Abdulkader, see Shanny you are a tool, what do you do with this? Frerence should have been 5 games, Abdulkader 6-10 games, but you went 1 and 2, now with Bourque you can’t suspend him, even tho he should be! And I am a Habs fan BTW, Shanny f*cks up again, any way he goes with this.

Do you ever say anything of intelligence?

      • windmiller4 - May 5, 2013 at 10:51 PM

His grammar might suck, and he might not make it coherent, but the right message is there. Basically he’s saying what we all know, which is that somehow Shannaban will find a way to screw this up

      • jasol20 - May 5, 2013 at 11:27 PM

His grammar does suck, but his message is wrong, too. Your message is fine – yes, Shanahan will probably blow it (although I actually think this postseason’s supp. discipline has been pretty fair). Ference should not be 5 in a playoff series, Abdelkader should not be 6 and definitely nowhere near 10. Nasty hit, but 10 games in a playoff series? That’s a laughable assessment…

I’m guessing 2-3. Obviously targets the head, and Bourque has a definite history. Puck wasn’t anywhere near them and it was totally unnecessary. Stupid play more than anything, really.

    Habs being Habs… surprise here!

  4. cupquest - May 5, 2013 at 11:18 PM

He’s a POS. I’d kick him out of the league.

  5. dumbassgreg - May 5, 2013 at 11:49 PM

    couple games

  6. hockeyflow33 - May 5, 2013 at 11:50 PM

    Should he? Yes

    Will he? Probably not

  7. caps4cup - May 6, 2013 at 12:38 AM

Get this bourque out of the league

  8. President Charles Logan - May 6, 2013 at 12:51 AM

this league is a soft pansy filled joke , you cant even lay a good old fashioned elbow on someone , take a minor penalty for it and have it be done with?? nowadays you have to worry about a suspension every time you breathe wrong……. pathetic

Do bears make potty in the woods…?

    • valoisvipers - May 6, 2013 at 9:18 AM

The answer to this HCBear is surprising, bear actually do most of their business on dirt roads as roads are easier to walk along than the forest.

  10. canadatude - May 6, 2013 at 4:08 AM

Just keep him out there for the next bench clearing brawl and put a muzzle on both coaches.

  11. ludacrish05 - May 6, 2013 at 6:09 AM

That guy needs 10 games, he hasn’t learned his lesson

  12. ribs108 - May 6, 2013 at 9:51 AM

Really tough team. When they ‘want’ to fight, they make sure a linesman is nearby to ‘protect’ the Sens player. At least we now know that the CH on their jersey stands for CHeap shot artists.

  13. rootbeerjem - May 6, 2013 at 3:48 PM

Repeat offender. 10 games. It’s not the severity of the hit, it’s the fact that he is still doing it..
