He’s back: Crosby will play versus Isles

May 3, 2013, 11:26 AM EDT

Sidney Crosby AP

The Pittsburgh Penguins will have their captain back tonight at the Consol Energy Center, as Sidney Crosby will return to the lineup for Game 2 of his team’s first-round series versus the New York Islanders.

“I feel good,” Crosby said. “I’m cleared to play tonight. I’m excited to get back in there and play in the playoffs.”

The 25-year-old has been out of the Penguins’ lineup since breaking his jaw on March 30. Before then, he had 56 points in 36 games, good enough to finish tied for third in the league’s scoring race despite playing just three quarters of the season.

At this morning’s game-day skate, Crosby was on his regular line with wingers Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz.

The other three lines were as follows, per the Post-Gazette:

Beau BennettEvgeni MalkinJarome Iginla

Brenden MorrowBrandon SutterMatt Cooke

Tanner GlassJussi JokinenCraig Adams

Pittsburgh won Game 1 of the series, 5-0, on Wednesday.

I saw Hartnell on the golf course yesterday and asked them about Crosby’s imminent return. All he said was “Penguins suck”

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 3, 2013 at 11:33 AM

Was he on the ladies tee?

      • laxman1944 - May 3, 2013 at 11:48 AM

It’s a gorgeous day nice breeze…….a simply lovely day to hit the little white ball around.

Some pretty good games lat night…..shame about the kid from Ottowa…

    • bobhpine - May 3, 2013 at 1:11 PM

OH right, that fourth line guy on that team that almost finished last.

      Got it.

      • laxman1944 - May 3, 2013 at 1:37 PM

Makes you feel good?…….better?………boy you told him…….so eloquent…….KARMA…….

  2. hockeywithdrawal - May 3, 2013 at 11:32 AM

    Nice. :)

  3. jpelle82 - May 3, 2013 at 11:33 AM

here we go. my blood pressure just went up, gonna be nerves for me until he gets hit for the first time and skates away from it ok. any word on neal’s injury other than he didnt practice? anyone?

    • sportsfreak13 - May 3, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Nope and coach wont give any details the rest of the playoffs. He was seen limping out of console yesterday and one reporter had a source (not howard eskin) who said it wasn’t a serious injury. Beau will take his spot on Geno’s line and honestly that’s not really a downgrade. Fun times to be a pens fan. Orpik not yet ready to come back either.

    • valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 3, 2013 at 12:18 PM

Jpelle82, Crosby has been hit plenty times this year. Nothing should be different tonight than it has been over the season.

      • jpelle82 - May 3, 2013 at 12:29 PM

hope not, you never know with the islanders. guys like matt martin like to clothes-line people from behind (talbot) when things dont go his way

      • timsabourin - May 3, 2013 at 12:37 PM

you mean aside from the shattered jaw held together by plates and screws? nice.

      • islesjb - May 3, 2013 at 1:44 PM

jpelle- that was retaliatory hit on Max Turtle Talbot from a dirty hit on Blake Comeau. Isles have no reason to do the same against Crosby.

      • jpelle82 - May 3, 2013 at 2:05 PM

i know what it was. point is, islanders didnt take too kindly to getting whooped the first meeting, came back and lost their cool the second time around. haley(?) challenged johnson too that game for him knocking out dipietro, at least he challenged him rather than sucker punching him from behind. martin can be a loose cannon is all i’m really saying…track record isnt good with the discipline department either.

      • valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 3, 2013 at 2:19 PM

Tim, he wouldn’t be playing in the first round vs the 8th place team if he couldn’t take a hit. C’mon! They don’t need him in this round to be the poor young islanders.

      • islesjb - May 3, 2013 at 2:31 PM

No one on the Islanders is going to try and fight/cheapshot Crosby. This is the playoffs and this is a completely different team. That said, they will try and knock the piss out of him- cleanly off course.

      • valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 3, 2013 at 2:38 PM

Cheap shot Crosby ! Really. C’mon! You can do better than that. What have you been watching?

      • islesjb - May 3, 2013 at 3:00 PM

When have they ever cheapshotted Crosby? Last time I checked, a deflected puck to the jaw doesn’t count as a cheapshot.

      • valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 3, 2013 at 3:21 PM

Got you! I miss-interpreted your comment.

      • bcisleman - May 3, 2013 at 9:47 PM

You mean when cheap shot artists don’t want to face the music.

  4. sportsfreak13 - May 3, 2013 at 11:35 AM

How can this be, just 2 days ago jimw81 told me he had a concussion and the penguins were covering it up. Now I cant trust him or howard eskin. All jokes aside this is great news and console is going to be really loud today. I love this time of the year!!!

  5. malkinrulez - May 3, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Sounds like Neal has an ankle injury

    • tkovacs2 - May 3, 2013 at 11:44 AM

      Obvious statement is obvious.

  6. malvaren18 - May 3, 2013 at 11:41 AM

That is a bad idea, Crosby always gets hurt playing against the isles.

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 3, 2013 at 1:14 PM

      He’s wearing a full-body visor.

      • islesjb - May 3, 2013 at 1:45 PM

what a pansy. John Tavares would play helmetless in the same scenario

      • hockeywithdrawal - May 3, 2013 at 1:47 PM

I’ll give it to you – JT did jump up quick after each and every hit last game…and there were a TON of hits.

      • islesjb - May 3, 2013 at 1:51 PM

I’d be surprised to see JT as invisible tonight as he was on Wednesday… and extremely disappointed. Pens did a great job at wrapping him up.

        Prediction: JT w 24 SOG, 6 G 3A

        Final Score:

        Isles :12
        Penguins :11

      • malkamania71 - May 3, 2013 at 2:46 PM

hahahaha now thats a predicition i like to see islesjb

      • islesjb - May 3, 2013 at 3:01 PM

It could happen. That’s less than 8 goals a period

  7. pitpenguinsrulez - May 3, 2013 at 11:44 AM

I am so psyched that I am going to the game!!!! This truly beats staying at my college dorm for the weekend!!!

  8. capsfan19 - May 3, 2013 at 11:47 AM

Ugh this team is far too deep and good. Jokinen is their fourth line center?? Thats nuts. If they fail to win the cup (which i hope they DONT) it will be massive disgrace.

    • laxman1944 - May 3, 2013 at 12:00 PM

How can they possibly NOT win the cup…..just look at them on paper……

      • bcisleman - May 3, 2013 at 12:04 PM

You don’t win the Cup on paper. Everyone in 1983 thought the Oilers were a lock…before we swept them.

      • sportsfreak13 - May 3, 2013 at 12:07 PM

He’s a flyer fan who was trying to be sarcastic, but it doesn’t come across well on the internet. That being said the islanders defiantly have their hands full.

      • laxman1944 - May 3, 2013 at 1:23 PM

Oh come on now…….I’m just hopin for a good series. Blow outs are boring and tiresome.

Glad to see multiple games on at the same time.

Sid’s not a freaking China doll…..if he plays like that he’ll get crushed.

You let these clown’s win a single game it’s a disgrace.

Off to the golf course with the rst of the boys…

      • sportsfreak13 - May 3, 2013 at 1:55 PM

Just curious laxman1944 why all the sudden posts on pens vs islanders articles. All season long I have never seen you post once (not even on your own team the flyers articles) now it seems like every pens related post your trying to rile up pens fans.

      • laxman1944 - May 3, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Simple… poster…..actually enjoy reading the posts but got sick and tired of zealot d-bags’ comments so I decided to throw some jabs myself.

Get a little carried away at times but for the most part keep it relatively civil and have a little fun with it.

      • sportsfreak13 - May 3, 2013 at 2:57 PM

haha defiantly. Welcome to the group.

      • laxman1944 - May 3, 2013 at 3:28 PM

Thanks Freak…….good luck tonight……though I imagine it may not be needed…

    • valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 3, 2013 at 12:22 PM

I think it’s a bigger disgrace that the Caps have not made it to the SC final with the teams they’ve had in the last 4 or six years, let alone win the cup. Fans! Always too emotional to see reality with respect to their own team.

      • laxman1944 - May 3, 2013 at 4:08 PM

They’ve been hot down the stretch run…….just like you want to be…….

    • bcisleman - May 3, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Turned out Isles were fine. Sure hope you Pens fans enjoyed Sid’s return.

  9. myroncopesflask - May 3, 2013 at 11:50 AM

It’s like Christmas in May!!! I can’t wait to see what Disco Dan does with these lines. Pretty sure the Pens are going to beat the piss out of the Isles tonight. 1975!!!

    • bcisleman - May 3, 2013 at 12:08 PM

And 1982 and 1993. Pens have a habit of losing to the Isles in the playoffs!!! We’ll see who gets the piss beaten out of them.

      • myroncopesflask - May 3, 2013 at 12:29 PM

You are right the Pens have never beat the Isles in the playoffs.. EVER!!! Do you honestly think that any of the current Pens players give a rusty sh!t about something that has happened 20 years ago? Don’t get me wrong it is possible for the entire Pens team to get food poisoning or maybe even a freak meteor hitting the team bus when they are driving from the airport in NY to the hotel. Outside of those two things happening it find it unlikely this series goes beyond a 5th game. good luck to your team!

      • bcisleman - May 3, 2013 at 9:53 PM

I wasn’t the one who brought up the history. And i suspect the Pens DO care about and would like to erase it–although, of course, it isn’t their primary motivation!

BTW, what happened tonight? Food poisoning? Meteor? Or maybe, just maybe Wednesday was a fluke and the Pens will have their hands full the rest of the way.

  10. Troll_toll - May 3, 2013 at 12:04 PM

Pens blow. Although one of the worlds greatest Cindy is a punk.

  11. f2maestro - May 3, 2013 at 12:08 PM

First thing that came to my head when I saw this articles topic? Jaws’ (no pun intended).

    Dun nun………….. Dun nun……….

Can not wait for tonight’s game.

  16. biffnasty - May 3, 2013 at 1:13 PM

glad he recovered from the minor its back to whining to the refs, and the inevitable concussion

    • mordock57 - May 3, 2013 at 2:22 PM

Boy, would I love to see your jaw shattered by a slap shot. Y’know, just to marvel at how you shake it off and go on with your life unaffected.

  17. steelcityfranchise - May 3, 2013 at 2:31 PM

Guess who’s back in the mutha ph*ckin house with a fat d*ck for yo mutha ph*ckin mouth!!

    Sid is….that’s who.

    • dtownbeatdown - May 3, 2013 at 6:09 PM

Umm… so you know he has a fat dick from experience? Or does your mother know? I am confused… What a weird ass comment.

      • steelcityfranchise - May 3, 2013 at 8:36 PM

I only know this fact to be true because your sister told me after she finished giving me a blumpkin.

PS….its a lyric….from one of the most popular rap songs of all time. Glad I had to explain that to you.

  18. malkinrulez - May 3, 2013 at 3:24 PM

I expect a better performance from the Isles , but just to much talent on the Pens

  19. jdrew506 - May 3, 2013 at 3:51 PM

I really hope the islanders don’t even breath on Crosby, the refs might dislocate their shoulder if they do. Never seen a player protected like Crosby since Mario. Go figure.

  20. ironman721 - May 3, 2013 at 5:51 PM

Business just picked up! Lets go Pens🐧❗

  21. pens5829 - May 3, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Two shifts. Two goals. Not bad for the 2nd best player in the world coming off a broken jaw? #1 is golfing today…
