Video: Lars Eller leaves ice on stretcher in scary scene

May 2, 2013, 8:58 PM EST

The 2013 playoffs already featured one hit that drew a suspension, but the scariest moment of the young postseason came on Thursday when Montreal Canadiens forward Lars Eller was taken off the ice on a stretcher after this hit by Ottawa Senators defenseman Eric Gryba:

This video is no longer available. Click here to watch more NBC Sports videos!

It’s very early, but the Montreal Gazette’s Dave Stubbs feels that there’s a strong chance that Eller, 23, suffered a concussion from the hit.

Gryba, 25, received a major penalty for interference and was also handed a game misconduct. The rookie played in 33 games this season, drawing 26 penalty minutes.

Some might see similarities between this moment and the grisly scene in which Rich Pilon left Kevin Stevens bloodied in the 1993 playoffs.

James O’Brien I have a cousin by the same name. Can you ban worthless trolls that post twenty times each on a story that they wish to troll? The 2 worthless trolls are eigglesnosuperbowls and whammy71
You would make many people here at PHT very happy.

        F off dude

  2. bman7206 - May 2, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Bad hit. Hope he’s ok. Never like go see a player go down like that. Having said that…to the ridiculous Habs fans – please do not flood 911 lines tonight, Dudley Do Right and the Mounties will not be mailing a criminal citation to Gryba in the near future.

    • themagicman1223 - May 2, 2013 at 9:09 PM

You’re an idiot, do you realize how huge the habs fan base is? Only the minority called 9-1-1 and that was the fans who know nothing about the game. Keep the generalizations coming, that just proves how simple-minded you are.

      • bman7206 - May 2, 2013 at 9:13 PM

Has Chara been to court yet? Clown!!

      • bern1417 - May 2, 2013 at 9:48 PM

The fact that anyone in a sports team’s fanbase would call 911 for something that happens on the field of play is moronic. The fact that you just justified that by saying ” it was the minority” makes YOU THE IDIOT, not bman7206.. I still remember Mon morons flooding YouTube pages asking for people to sign a petition bc Pacioretty( spelling mistake I know) would never walk again and blah, blah, blah. But hey ,he’s fine and plays and he throws cheap elbows still. Chara through a clean hit and you people wanted him thrown in jail -many LOL’S-. But your fanbase is soooooooooooo big, lol… Who cares!!!

      • bern1417 - May 2, 2013 at 9:50 PM

*** I meant threw not through***

      • valoisvipers - May 2, 2013 at 10:24 PM

@themagicman1223 The calls to 911 got so severely over loaded in Mtl over the Chara hit that the radio stations to ask people to stop calling 911 about Chara.

    • sabatimus - May 2, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Clean hit, very bad result. Eller broke his nose and probably concusses himself when he hit the ice.

      • jimw81 - May 2, 2013 at 10:06 PM

Clean hit off a suicide pass from Diaz.

      • sabatimus - May 2, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Yep. That was NOT a good idea by Diaz, to say the least.

  3. killerpgh - May 2, 2013 at 9:07 PM

Never like to see that happen. But I don’t see how the ref can call that interference.

  4. themagicman1223 - May 2, 2013 at 9:08 PM

I hate it, our second best center after Plekanec gets injured. I love Eller as a player, hope he’s going to be okay.

  5. bigt12789 - May 2, 2013 at 9:08 PM

Yikes… Not gonna guess what the aftermath of this hit will be, but man that was a lot of blood. As a B’s fan my hate for the Habs runs deep, but you never wanna see a guy taken off on a stretcher.

      Lol…….great one……

      nasty shot though………..playoff hockey

  7. buckeye044 - May 2, 2013 at 9:11 PM

Not convinced it was a bad hit. The Ference hit was worse and had more intent. Most of the damage here was from him hitting the ice. Only person that should be suspended is Diaz for making the pass.

    • laxman1944 - May 2, 2013 at 9:19 PM

you know it almost looked like he was striding through him to,get to the other….and kind of just caught him

  8. tycobbfromfangraphs - May 2, 2013 at 9:13 PM

I don’t see any problem other than a risky pass by Diaz. He had the puck, he got hit clean from what I can tell, and fell badly, most likely his visor and the ice busted his nose up something awful, but i still can’t see the head being the point of contact. Maybe there is another angle that shows it, but I’m not seeing it.

    • nothanksimdriving123 - May 2, 2013 at 10:17 PM

I’ve no horse in this race, and that’s pretty much what I saw too, that Eller was stunned from the unexpected, very hard hit, perhaps to his chest(?), and his face hit the ice. Gruesome, but no suspension, and I’d question the interference call. I do hope he’s able to return to action soon.

  9. tycobbfromfangraphs - May 2, 2013 at 9:18 PM

If anyone else is watching the game, YIKES that was a bad goal for Price to give up to make it 2-2

  10. gmenfan1982 - May 2, 2013 at 9:18 PM

I don’t see how that is a game misconduct let alone interference. Two players skating in same area, puck was passed to Eller and the collision happened. Eller was bleeding from when he hit ice, not from the hit.

  11. malkinrulez - May 2, 2013 at 9:18 PM

Very similar to the Kevin Stevens hit as both were out before they hit the ice and hit face first. Horrible to watch. Kevin had multiple facial fractures hope Eller is okay

  12. whatthepuck2012 - May 2, 2013 at 9:22 PM

He was a rag doll by the time he hit the ice. I really hope he’s okay.

  13. bern1417 - May 2, 2013 at 9:39 PM

I don’t have a dog in this fight. However, I’m going to bet that Shanny misses this one and gets this completely wrong. No way, no how should this be a suspension. Gryba put his shoulder to Eller’s chest a nanosecond after Eller had the puck. The blood on the ice was from his face planting on the ice ala Kevin Stevens in 93. Diaz should be benched for hanging his teammate out to dry with that pass. It was like a qb floating one over the middle for his wr to get knocked the F out!!!

    • pens5829 - May 2, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Explain to me how his head violently snaps back from a hit to the chest? Definitely a shoulder to the chin. Dude was OUT before he even left his skates. Intentional or not, you’re still responsible for your actions in “today’s” game.

Keep blowing calls like this Shanny and, like the NFL, the NHL will be hearing from the lawyers in 5 years like the NFL.

His heads snaps back from getting hit right on the button your chin ! I have to consider the source,,, a pens fan they see things a lot different ! I guess they still get bad reception because cable hasn’t reached them yet !

      • valoisvipers - May 2, 2013 at 10:32 PM

I don’t know about you but my head is attached to my chest via my neck and where my chest goes my head just seems to follow.

  14. bengalguy - May 2, 2013 at 9:45 PM

GO SENS GO!!!!!! C. Price is swiss cheese.

  15. 8man - May 2, 2013 at 9:56 PM

Just a sloppy hit. Over zealous perhaps. I don’t think Gryba meant to hurt Eller, but players have to be responsible for their hits and actions on the ice. There is precedent to suspend Gryba for at least the remainder of the series. I guess it depends on how the league interprets the hit.

I swear when I saw the picture, I thought it was far worse. Like Clint Malarchuk worse. Thankfully, it’s not life threatening for Eller. Hope the kid is okay and returns soon.

    • valoisvipers - May 2, 2013 at 10:38 PM

You are right about one thing and one thing only and that’s ” I guess it depends on how the league interprets the hit” I do not see any suspension except to maybe the referee that called an interference penalty on the play. Too bad for Eller but such is life in playoff hockey, now scrape him up and suivent-next.

  16. bern1417 - May 2, 2013 at 10:04 PM

@ the author… The difference between this hit and Stevens/Pilon hit is that Stevens knocked himself out by hitting Pilon’s visor. The similarity is only the blood on the ice as I stated in my original post w/o reading that you put the Stevens/Pilon incident in there. Hopefully, Eller doesn’t lay in bed for months like Stevens did. That hit changed the way the best power forward of the late 80′s early 90′s played the game, and not for the better. Stevens lost his physical presence, and chippiness that made him successful. It’s a shame, but it was just one of those freak things that happen in this great sport.

  17. junterberger22 - May 2, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Love ottawas coaches comment, saying that the reason his guy made a blind side illegal hit is because ellar got a bad pass. Sure that may be what put him in a tough spot but it doesn’t excuse the dirty hit. That hit is a hockey play, yet he accused Matt Cooke of cutting karlson on purpose. Holy cow Ottawa senators organization is clearly a bunch of hypocritical duche bags

  18. Stiller43 - May 2, 2013 at 11:21 PM

    Eiggles,

Are you really trying to deny you do nothing but troll? Or by telling him to F off, are you admitting it but just saying you should be able to troll? Just curious.

    • valoisvipers - May 3, 2013 at 1:17 AM

You know I don’t care if trolls troll, but, not twenty pieces of one line stupidity. It is not fun scrolling far down the page to read what other people have to say then scrolling back up to go read another story.
I guess they are just dumb immature kids seeking attention and we shouldn’t feed them cookies by responding to their posts but I sure would like to see them banned till they grow up.

        Go suck a cock!

  19. odj810 - May 3, 2013 at 9:19 AM

Dirty or not you lay someone out like that and get challenged after you better drop them. Especially when your 6’5. props to the rook for trying to stick up for his teammate.
Also is that how medicine is done in montreal? no board and c coller?
