Video: CBC’s opening playoff montage is a must-see

May 2, 2013, 9:34 AM EDT

If you weren’t fired up for the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs, don’t worry, CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada will cure what ails you.

One of the highlights to their production each year is their montage to open up the playoffs and what producer Tim Thompson came up with this time around should have you ready to run through a wall for your team. Or at the very least run through a wall to get in front of a TV.

Highlights of playoffs past set to The Who’s “Baba O’Riley”? Yes please.

Stirring stuff. If you didn’t quite feel it was playoffs yet due to the lockout, that might have change your mind.

If this gave you goose bumps you should see NBCSN montage…oh wait they don’t bother with things that their fans might want to see.

r4, that’s because they know we would much rather see a few guys in suits talking in a studio than either cool videos or what’s happening in the arena. And the NHL Network does an even better job of quickly cutting away from any of that celebration crap so we can see their awesome studio. NHLN has also gotten very good at letting us enjoy that spine-tingling studio stuff before games so that we can avoid the tedious pre-game arena nonsense, such as the anthems in Chicago. Kudos NHLN.

The NHL does the best job of the 4 major sports promoting the playoffs. Remember the “History Will Be Made” promo campaign? That ish still gives me goosebumps.

To clarify, this is not an NHL video. It was produced by the CBC to open their HNIC Cup coverage.

Great stuff as usual from the CBC.

The only problem is that I’m going to have that song in my head the rest of the day.

    Yes! yes! and yes!

great video but waaayyy to many shots of the maple leafs i mean they haven’t made the playoffs in 9 years! and haven’t won the cup in over 35 years! typical delusion from toronto centric media (and i should include TSN – ‘Toronto sports network’). Get back to me when the leafs are relevant. But great montage besides that…

In the early years of HNIC, say from early 1950s to 1969, almost all the Cups were won by the Habs, Leafs and Wings. That’s what is in the CBC archives, and what some of us older fans grew up with. Obviously way different over the last 40 years. (It’s 46 years since Toronto last won it.) I did see a lot of more recent stuff in this video. We could also do a montage celebrating the Sabres, Canucks, Senators, North Stars, Capitals, Blues, Wild, Sharks, Jets, Coyotes, Predators, Jackets and Panthers Cup victories, and it would be somewhat briefer.

It was decent but honestly…it wasnt that hard to put together. A few sound bytes, shots of teams winning, current teams in the playoffs, etc. The end would have been cool to go through all the cups being raised in a really fast motion. Kind of like the one they did with photos a little while ago to make it look like one motion. Very cool. Also there is obviously tons of Canadian teams in there which is fine but I think I saw maybe 1 clip of the Isles in there and they have decent amount of Cups and from not THAT long ago.

I dont think the lyrics/song meaning really captures the NHL playoffs or sports for that matter. The music fits almost anything you put it too. Its just that good of a song. I would have gone another route for the song…for sure.

Ok wait…nevermind about the Isles. Had to re-watch without being distracted.

Reblogged this on back bar hockey and commented:
If this doesn’t get you amped up for playoff hockey, check your pulse.

Wow, did CBC just throw that together on Monday? That was one of their weaker videos. It doesnt compare to last year’s or some of the older ones. I was waiting to see this and it was disappointing.
