Despite his brother Jordan being added to the mix and Alexander Semin‘s productive first season with the team, Carolina Hurricanes star Eric Staal finds himself outside of the NHL playoffs again. There’s a sliver lining, though: he’ll still captain a high-level team in May.

Staal was named the captain of Canada’s entry into the 2013 Men’s World Ice Hockey Championships on Thursday, according to the CBC’s Tim Wharnsby.

In case you’re wondering, here’s Team Canada’s roster for the tournament (which takes place May 3-19 in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland):

Goalies: Michael Garnett, Devan Dubnyk and Mike Smith
Defense: Stephane Robidas, Brendan Dillon, T.J. Brodie, Justin Schultz, Luke Schenn, Jay Harrison and Brian Campbell
Forwards: Taylor Hall, Matt Duchene, Jordan Staal, Eric Staal, Jordan Eberle, Andrew Ladd, Wayne Simmonds, Matt Read, Claude Giroux, Jeff Skinner, Ryan O’Reilly and Steven Stamkos

Eric is the right choice to be Captain of this team.

Back end looks a little shaky, but in a week or so they’ll get the usual dose of first-round eliminations looking for a win somewhere. Forwards are stacked as hell already, even without playoff team additions. Not bad at all.

if smith goes down hope this garnett can play dubnyk sucks. deadmonton needs a real goalie if they want to improve.

You come by your name honestly Greg, if you have watched Edmonton play this year you wouldn’t be blaming Dubnyk.
