Video: Bruins’ Ference elbows Leafs’ Grabovski

May 1, 2013, 8:02 PM EDT

Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference might draw some attention from the league office for this elbow on Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovski, which happened in the first period of Game 1 on Wednesday:

Referees must have missed the hit, as Ference didn’t receive a penalty on the play.

The 34-year-old has had his moments of controversy, perhaps most memorably when he “accidentally” offered an obscene gesture to Montreal Canadiens fans. He’s also delivered a few questionable hits, leading the National Post’s Bruce Arthur to provide a stern assessment of the blueliner:

It’s been a rough start to the game for Grabovski, so we’ll make note of whether he misses some time or not.

  1. sportsfaninyyc - May 1, 2013 at 8:06 PM

That one might cost him a game or two.

    • DTF31 - May 1, 2013 at 8:24 PM

Don’t be silly, its the playoffs and Grabovksi’s limbs are still attached.

    • nunan - May 1, 2013 at 10:08 PM

i dont think so. ference was going into the corner expecting contact and grabovski let up. It’s grabovski letting up that causes the contact to his head. Had he kept moving, it would have been shoulder to shoulder. nothing malicious about that at all…just bad luck for grabovski.

  2. concoursrider - May 1, 2013 at 8:23 PM

Annnnnnd the Leaf fans are whining now! That’s why Canada is “America junior” or “Americas hat”, whichever you Canadians prefer!

    • loinstache - May 1, 2013 at 8:57 PM

hahaha that ‘jab’ was as soft as an American belly

    • butmunch - May 1, 2013 at 11:03 PM

lol an american fan bragging about a game that was POORLY ref’d BY an american ref. lol We don’t whine.. we laugh when you arrogant pukes either jump out of building buildings OR when you cross a finish line and get blown up THEN you cry .. we laugh Your nation is PATHETIC!.. don’t look over your shoulder another pissd off towel head is planting a pressure cooker under your porch !

      • hockeyflow33 - May 2, 2013 at 12:49 AM

I get the trolling thing because honestly it is fun sometimes but there really is no excuse for this. It’s great that you’re attempting to make jokes, unfortunately none of them are creative or funny, but maybe you should take a second and examine how much of a failure you are as a human being.

      • scalfor3 - May 2, 2013 at 9:52 AM

way to live up to your name, “butmunch”

  3. Stiller43 - May 1, 2013 at 8:23 PM

Looked like a WWE move. Reg season its def a suspension for a couple games. Idk what shanny will do since its the playoffs, however

  4. adge84 - May 1, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Guessing two games. That was a pretty blatant elbow. It was also just stupid intentional. Would be four if it was the regular season. 1 game if grabovski is fine.

  5. sabatimus - May 1, 2013 at 8:41 PM

I didn’t think it was flagrant, but Ference certainly could’ve kept his elbow down. Who knows what Shanny will say.

  6. cspsrbums - May 1, 2013 at 8:47 PM

Do you expect anything else from these thugs they can’t play hockey they just trow cheap shots all night

    • sabatimus - May 1, 2013 at 8:52 PM

Yep, those 4 goals were all flukes, nothing to do with Krecji, Redden, and CERTAINLY not Jagr.

    • drewsylvania - May 1, 2013 at 8:56 PM

You haven’t watched hockey this season, I take it?

      • drewzducks - May 2, 2013 at 12:36 AM

I think that’s Habsies husband chiming in.

    • rosettast0ned - May 2, 2013 at 10:32 AM

Really? I think 2011 begs to differ. They play a physical game, there is a difference. Granted the above hit is a little questionable even as a Bruins fan I will admit that. If they can’t play hockey then explain the 4-1 score to me, or one of those most solid defensive corps for seasons, and the depth of the team. I think Patrice Bergeron would have something to say about you labeling the whole team as a bunch of thugs, in case you haven’t noticed Bergeron is one of the most even tempered sportsman like player in this generation of the NHL, not to mention he is perenially considered as a Lady Byng candidate.

  7. titansbro - May 1, 2013 at 8:52 PM

As a Bs fan even I think that looks bad.

  8. tdrusher225 - May 1, 2013 at 8:56 PM

I think he was expecting Grabovski continue on his line and make body contact. I don’t think this one was intentional, but it’s hard to argue considering we’ve seen him make plays like that before (See: Game 7 2011)

  9. mpg44 - May 1, 2013 at 9:04 PM

Officiating has been horrible all regular season long …. Did any one actually think the playoffs would be any different ? Big issue , big problem league wide , needs to be fixed ASAP!

    • hockeyflow33 - May 1, 2013 at 10:35 PM

The B’s game and Pens game both had solid officiating tonight. Both crews kept what could have been complete gongshows in-check.

  10. soj83 - May 1, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Since it was Ference, and not Chara or Seidenberg, he may get a game. The NHL usually suspends people based on the outcome of the hit and not the intent and they also have an easier time suspending players that are a couple rungs down the depth chart and not a star if the opponent didn’t get hurt. If he is gone, it looks like Hamilton will make his playoff debut.

    • box080809 - May 1, 2013 at 10:01 PM

He won’t get suspended. The league rarely ever suspends someone from Boston. Especially when a similar play resulted in a suspension around that same time. If Grabovski was injured it might have been a two game suspension. He wasn’t, Ference won’t be suspended.

      • hockeyflow33 - May 2, 2013 at 12:53 AM

It seems like most teams don’t have players suspended:

This comment is glaring proof that you can’t fix stupid.

      • 19to77 - May 1, 2013 at 10:37 PM

But apparently you can program it directly into people with the wonders of the American school system.

      • 19to77 - May 1, 2013 at 10:41 PM

And also the Canadian, since they’re honestly not that different. Seriously. It’s a common opinion that we have dramatically better education than Americans, and I always wonder, “Based on what?” Dropout rates aren’t MUCH higher in the U.S. and are mostly the function of a handful of southern/central states dragging the average up. And as for postsecondary education, the U.S. has what, ten of the top fifteen universities in the world?

Seriously, idiots are a race without borders.

      • butmunch - May 1, 2013 at 10:57 PM

HAHAHHA US talking about schools LOL.. Anyone have a pressure cooker for sale ?… Marathon sale.. !

    • hockeyflow33 - May 1, 2013 at 10:36 PM

You do know our dollar is worth more than the Canadian dollar, right?

Oh little brother syndrome is so cute.

LMFAO US dollar is like an American IQ test up and down like your mom on my Canadian dad LOL

  15. dt58 - May 2, 2013 at 12:41 AM

I’m surprised you Americans could even figure out how to post on here. Must have someone sounding out the big words for you. Sorry, we’ll try to use words with only 2 syllables to make it easier on you. And really, you’re going to run your mouth to Canadians about hockey? Please remove head from a$$

    • scalfor3 - May 2, 2013 at 9:58 AM

Nope. We’ll just run our mouths about our team of Canadian players beating the hell out of your team of Canadian players last night.

      • dt58 - May 2, 2013 at 9:39 PM

Not my team dude. Contrary to popular belief and Sportscenter, not all Canadians are Leafs fans. Never liked them, never will. But you can be damn sure that when Canada is insulted, I will be offended. I would think that would be the same with you and where you’re from

    • scalfor3 - May 3, 2013 at 5:35 PM

You missed my point, my man. I was trying to point out that all of this “America vs. Canada” trash talk is silly and has little to do with the series. The Leafs biggest star (Kessel) is an American, while 5 of the Bruins top 6 forwards (Horton, Lucic, Marchand, Bergeron, Seguin) are Canadians. Talking mess about each others teams is all good and fun, bringing nationalism into it makes everyone (including you in your first comment) sound like a bunch of neanderthals.

  16. dt58 - May 2, 2013 at 12:56 AM

Wow…good one. You really got me there. Guess I’ll jump out of a window. Oh wait, for some reason we don’t have that problem. But it’s not you it’s everyone else…

  17. jpak12 - May 2, 2013 at 1:20 AM

I’m a Leafs fan but Il try not to be biased lol..

First off that was clearly an elbow and generally worthy of suspension there no way you can argue that

Second the Bruins kicked our @$$ in every aspect of the game they didn’t win because cheap dirty hits, they didn’t win because the refs, they one because tonight they were the better team and also more experienced team the Leafs are young and do not have much playoff experience and it shown big time, hopefully now that the Leafs got that out of the way they can pick it up.

Also wish that Carlyle would have kept the two top lines from the season together jvr,Bozak, kessel were together but they should have kept Lupul,Kadri and Kulemin together.

And for the two that are insulting each country your both just embarrassing Canadians and Americans with your nonsense.

  18. rosettast0ned - May 2, 2013 at 10:10 AM

You are a waste of perfectly viable semen, why don’t you learn a thing or two about human decency? One of my best friends died to protect not only Americans, but those around the world from the “pissed off towel heads.” I understand being pissed about the whole “America’s tophat,” thing and I would be too if I was Canadian, but the difference is I would have the decency to not take jabs at a national tragedy. If Canada would go through a similar tragedy I would have nothing but the utmost respect for them as a nation and would offer my support in any way possible. I have associated with many Canadians in my life, and they are some of the most upstanding friendly people it has been my pleasure to meet, you obviously are not one of them. As for all of the idiots that think it is accetable to call Canada America’s tophat you are pretty ignorant yourselves, that is no way to treat a close ally. For christ sakes its a hockey game, I am passionate about hockey too, but I keep post to within the confines of the game. There is nothing wrong with trash talk and rivalrys, hell it’s part of the appeal of the game, but this has gone way too far. Consider yourself lucky PHT didn’t allow my original post to clear, you troglodyte.

    • rosettast0ned - May 2, 2013 at 10:13 AM

*but i keep my posts* I apologize for the typo before someone calls me out on it.

  19. cliverush - May 2, 2013 at 12:38 PM

The level of discourse on this site is a blackeye to the majority of Canadians. The hatred displayed at the USA is unreal. Our two countries have a border that has no fence nor should it. The citizens of both countries have defended freedom around the world with their lives and fortune. Any low life that can look at a picture of children being killed and maimed and ridicule is not a person that deserves the freedom allowed by our two countries.

  20. acuratech348 - May 3, 2013 at 8:06 AM

@Rosettast0ned, Could not have said it better myself. @butmunch, I was not aware Canadiens we’re capable of such hatred, scary my man.. Ive always thought of Canada as a peaceful nation. Even after Vancouver destroyed their city when they lost the cup to us a couple years back. Peace brother, lets just enjoy the game. Boston Strong!
