No Crosby for Game 1 versus Isles

After skating on the “fifth” line this morning, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby confirmed he will not play tonight versus the Islanders in the first-round series-opener at the Consol Energy Center.

Crosby has been out of the Pittsburgh lineup since March 30, when he broke his jaw in a game against the Islanders.

Yesterday, his doctor said he still needed time to heal.

“He said everything was good,” Crosby said, per the Post-Gazette. “He just wasn’t prepared to declare me (ready) to play. Obviously, I would have loved to have had a chance to play tonight, but that’s not the way it is.

“I wanted to make sure I’m ready when the time comes.”

The Penguins went 8-4-0 without Crosby after he was injured.

I think the earliest we see him is if Pens make it to 3rd round or finals otherwise see you next year Sid.

    • basedrum777 - May 1, 2013 at 12:10 PM

He’ll be in game three this series if we don’t go up 2-0. Bank on it.

      • tuberippin - May 1, 2013 at 1:23 PM

        Thanks, doctor.

      • flavadave10 - May 1, 2013 at 1:36 PM

        Why thank you Doctor basedrum777.

    • valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 1, 2013 at 12:38 PM

And how do you know this? I can see why they waited until the last minute to pull him from today’s game, why would he need until the third or fourth round to return.

      • hockeywithdrawal - May 1, 2013 at 1:26 PM

He doesn’t know it – he’s not a Pens fan. Not that it matters or anything, everyone’s opinion and comment is welcome. But look back through his comments, or watch going forward – he always pulls the same doomsday lines.

        Obvious troll is obvious

      • holeecowman - May 1, 2013 at 2:37 PM

to make sure his d- s-ing ability is there for gary and the refs

  2. elemeno89 - May 1, 2013 at 12:03 PM

One less tank won’t lose a war. It all depends on how the other assets on the team can mold and perform. There’s so much skill on that team, it could one of two ways.

1.) Very well, with all lines meshing seamlessly.

2.) Very bad, by being too overloaded with talent and players not coming together to perform.

Will be interesting to watch how the team performs in the sh** without their best player though…

  3. steelers88 - May 1, 2013 at 12:08 PM

Sid said doctor told him that he has no date on when his jaw will be good enough to play not good.

    • aso513 - May 1, 2013 at 1:04 PM

Dude, you aren’t a good troll, give it up.

  4. biffnasty - May 1, 2013 at 12:10 PM

what a girl..still milking that minor injury.

    • 19to77 - May 1, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Hey, come here a sec. I want to take a slapshot at your teeth and watch you walk it off.

      • theageofquarrel - May 1, 2013 at 1:29 PM

With a name like Biff what do you expect?

      • andrewproughcfe - May 1, 2013 at 1:55 PM

Rub a little dirt on it.

      • holeecowman - May 1, 2013 at 2:35 PM

um ok dip shat it wasn’t a slap shot stop trying to act like you know the sport already.. go back to the rock you climbe out from under in 2005/6

      • theageofquarrel - May 1, 2013 at 3:58 PM

How can a Flyer fan talk trash about anything, it’s been almost 40 years since they won a cup. 40 YEARS!!! Go back to the hole you came from.

      • 19to77 - May 1, 2013 at 7:52 PM

I’m sorry, are you seriously trying to defend your “Crosby is milking his broken jaw” argument on the technicality of what type of shot broke it? Fine. Make it a wrister.

  5. JoeAvg - May 1, 2013 at 12:13 PM

Bummer. But he hasn’t been out too long. Should only need a couple games in to get his timing back for round two. Did they say when his next follow up is?

  6. bgrillz - May 1, 2013 at 12:14 PM

Some of you guys are compete tools…milking a minor injury? Round 3, or next year? Can you present yourself as any more of an idiot?

  7. steelers88 - May 1, 2013 at 12:15 PM

Umm… He can’t play until the doctors clear him. I don’t think a few days will make a difference.

  8. modellforprez - May 1, 2013 at 12:29 PM

Pens shouldnt need sid. i love the isles nucleus it reminds me of the pens in 07 deep but inexperienced. playoff games for teams by player. islanders 87 penguins 973. pens should win in 5 maybe 6

    • jpelle82 - May 1, 2013 at 12:41 PM

pretty sure matt cooke or craig adams individually have the same number of games as the whole islander team. no substitute for experience…game 1 at home for the pens, islanders need to just hold onto their bootstraps because its gonna be fast. if they make it through the first 5 mins they might be able to make it interesting. i predict quick scoring from the pens though, they come out flying and overwhelm.

  9. haterzinc - May 1, 2013 at 12:38 PM

No doubt goal scoring when down when Sid went out with the injury. Expect a tight low scoring game.

  10. drone501 - May 1, 2013 at 12:44 PM

all comes down to fleury. all you pens fans know what im taking about.

  11. valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 1, 2013 at 12:45 PM

if Pens can’t win a best of 7 against the Isles without Crosby then they don’t deserve to have a GM like Shero. This guy has made great moves specifically to be able to win games in the playoffs regardless of injuries. They have the best duo of goaltending going into the playoffs, and enough talent for 4 strong lines.

    • JoeAvg - May 1, 2013 at 1:20 PM

I don’t know about that “best duo” part, Crawford/Emery might have something to say about that. A few others too. But it’s definitely the best the Pens have ever had (only Barrasso/Wregget come close) if that’s what you mean. Other than that I agree with the general sentiment.

I’d rather the Isles put up good fight than be completely outplayed. Don’t want to get too complacent. Best to have tough opponents.

      • jpelle82 - May 1, 2013 at 2:16 PM

except emery and schneider are hurt, otherwise i would say the hawks and nucks have the best duo. elliott and halak/allen is pretty good too.

    • bcisleman - May 1, 2013 at 1:34 PM

Shero can’t readily change his goaltending combo and that will be key. Flower has stunk the last three playoffs. Vokoun has VERY limited playoff experience and it was a long time ago. Flower is probably a LOT more important to the Pens’ fate than Sid is.

      • jpelle82 - May 1, 2013 at 2:57 PM

youre nuts if you think bylsma wont make a goalie change if necessary BC. keep holding onto hope though

  12. bcisleman - May 1, 2013 at 1:31 PM

The Pens are obviously trying to keep people guessing. Here is a little objective info. Jack Hillen suffered the same injury on an Ovi slapshot and was out 6 weeks. That would take Sid to May 12. If he plays at all in the first round, it probably won’t be before Game 6 or 7 if it gets that far.

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 1, 2013 at 1:34 PM

6 weeks was probably the best and most credible estimate when this whole thing happened too…if 6 weeks is generally accepted, there may not be a slew of doctors that will clear him before then.

      • bcisleman - May 1, 2013 at 1:37 PM

The Pens would be silly to rush him back at all. This series–and the playoffs overall–will depend on Flower, not Sid.

      • blackfoot11 - May 1, 2013 at 1:45 PM

bcisleman…you pegged it. The Pens hing on Fleury in goal, not an injured Sid. He must answer the critics who have been questioning his playoff performances since the ’09 Cup.

      • jpelle82 - May 1, 2013 at 2:12 PM

if he plays bad bylsma will be quick to pull him, you guys dont realize how short his leash is. bylsma has all the confidence in the world in vokoun, dan would be fired if the flower plays like he did last year and he leaves him in.

      • blackfoot11 - May 1, 2013 at 4:02 PM

J… Ok, he may be on a short leash, but he is a $5 million plus ‘Franchise’ goalie that needs to deliver a good post-season performance. Do you want to see a revolving door in net between Fleury and Vokoun during the playoffs?

      • jpelle82 - May 1, 2013 at 4:23 PM

i’d love to see fleury win like he has been all year but make no mistake, if he puts up a luongo-like road game i will be calling for vokoun without batting an eye. loyalty to the club not the player, pens gotta do what they gotta do to win, shero got vokoun for this exact reason and his strong play has been good for fleury’s game.

      • blackfoot11 - May 1, 2013 at 5:11 PM

I guess Fluery is on a short leash with the fans as well. Best of luck to your boys, J.

  13. hockeywithdrawal - May 1, 2013 at 1:32 PM

It sucks he’s not available just yet – but he’s practicing, etc., and personally I’d rather see him practice with contact first, THEN play in a playoff game. Good news is that some young buck that otherwise would be benched is going to get a shot at a playoff game that otherwise might not this year. Not that I have an opinion on it (Bennett) but I’d (Bennett) much rather (Bennett) see Bennett get a shot at it (Bennett) over TK. Adams/Glass/Bennett on the fourth. Jokinen can be the face off man in our end instead of Vitale, with Sid being out…so Vitale playing shouldn’t be vital.

    • jpelle82 - May 1, 2013 at 2:13 PM

looks like tk was practicing with jeffrey and crosby…likely out and bennett is in….thank God.

    • jpelle82 - May 1, 2013 at 4:27 PM

i dont see the 4th line taking too many faceoffs if thats the combination he puts out there (15 27 19)…unless they get caught on icing calls and adams takes them. jokinen will get quite a few minutes this game/series and take a lot of faceoffs along with sutter.

  14. ironyisadeadscene - May 1, 2013 at 1:59 PM

    Whatever, go Islanders

  15. holeecowman - May 1, 2013 at 2:33 PM

awe poor baby… how can he play with that guard blocking the refs cack anyway?

im taking bets on who delivers the first high stick/elbow/shoulder to the isles young guys heads.
cooke, letang, malkin, neal the odds are the same across the board.
I heard the pens were practicing headhunting this morning. and low bridging (knee shots) and how to take out (cut) a guys achilles by making it look like an accident. cough cough cooke cough.
heres goes to hoping that maf aka flower wilts again. lol

    • malkamania71 - May 1, 2013 at 2:52 PM

      yawn…

Another salty Pens hater? I’m astonished

      Quit crying. This is Hockey.

    • biffnasty - May 1, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Man this guy knows the game..been sayin all along how much cindy loves givin the gummers

  16. holeecowman - May 1, 2013 at 2:40 PM

hes got another concusion but their keeping it a secret. saying its his jaw a real man would be playing tonight.

    • bmoreredfury311 - May 1, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Mike Knuble played with a broken jaw, and I’m sure many others did as well. Not knocking the kid, but its playoffs. Don’t ever count a team out. Should be a great series.

  17. jmikeymania - May 1, 2013 at 2:42 PM

    holeecowman…full blown d-bag.

  18. jimw81 - May 1, 2013 at 3:14 PM

i guess eskin got it right along. if you are working with a conditioning coach. not good.

    • sportsfreak13 - May 1, 2013 at 4:00 PM

Eskin said concussion which has been denied over and over again. He’s day to day and will probably be back this series. Neal and martin were working with that same conditioning coach 4 days ago and look how that has turned out.

      • jimw81 - May 1, 2013 at 5:21 PM

        Yah… Sure… Broken jaw.They are hiding a concussed Crosby.

      • sportsfreak13 - May 2, 2013 at 12:37 AM

Crosby is talking to the media everyday. Radio interviews, reporters, NHL network. Do you really think he’d be doing all that with a concussion? Maybe you have a concussion. Stick to analyzing and figuring out your own team, because its a mess.

  19. steelers88 - May 1, 2013 at 3:26 PM

I think that Crosby will be one to hold the Pens back from winning the cup this year. Just a suggestion I would keep Sid out for rest of season. Bringing him back now would destroy team chemistry.

    • sportsfreak13 - May 1, 2013 at 3:35 PM

Please no one pay attention to or reply to anything steelers88 says. He’s just a attention deprived kid who loves to troll pens fans.

      • haterzinc - May 1, 2013 at 4:41 PM

I seriously believe steelers 88 is not from Pittsburgh or is a Pittsburgh fan. Every comment he/she makes is completely retarded. Prob a flyer troll in disguise. Making questionable comments

  20. holeecowman - May 1, 2013 at 4:00 PM

Mario has released a statement saying if the pens don’t win the cup or least get to round 3 a chapter 11 will be filed in the near future. and will be moving to seattle.

    bawahahahahahahahahahahaha.

    • sportsfreak13 - May 1, 2013 at 4:00 PM

Let me guess your team is on the golf course already?

      bawahahahahahahahahahaha.

    • jimw81 - May 1, 2013 at 5:27 PM

he’s writing a letter on his notepad

  21. holeecowman - May 1, 2013 at 4:02 PM

gary and the refs have stated if no famous cindy gummers… then no advancement

  22. steelers88 - May 1, 2013 at 4:17 PM

I kind of wish Crosby was like Ovi. At least Ovi is healthy every season. While every DAMN time you turn around Crosby is injured!

    • dtob79 - May 1, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Yeah, Crosby need to work harder on not getting hit in the jaw with pucks, like Ovi does.

      • holeecowman - May 1, 2013 at 5:42 PM

        dont you mean cacks lol

      • biffnasty - May 1, 2013 at 5:43 PM

He needs to work on being such a b1tch,, and man up for once

  23. steelers88 - May 1, 2013 at 5:25 PM

Without Crosby I think the Pens lose this series. Crosby is the heart and soul of the team and you take him out the Penguins fall apart. I just don’t see the Pens winning a playoff series without Crosby.

  24. holeecowman - May 1, 2013 at 5:41 PM

    let me get this straight.

1- I have been around and a fan of hockey since way before Crosby. (mid 80s)
2-yes the team I cheer on is on the golf course. don’t care really it was a shaty hockey season anyway. should’ve held out to summer to get the deal done. 82 games not 48 wth
3-my team never threatened to move due to poor fan support nor cause my city refused to build a new arena. nor thought about filing for bankruptcy.
4-you half arsed pens fans just need to stfu nobody cares about your whinny/dirty/cheap shot team. or your half arsed comments on here. I will admit there are very few of them that know what their talking about. VERY FEW
5-i just cant wait for the pens to have a bad season then the stands will empty again for that piss poor team. just prove everybody right on here calling them fraudulent fans out.
    6- GO ISLES
7-pittsburgh is no longer the steel city hasn’t been for many years. theirs a new boss in town. not sure who, but I do know its not the formerly known steel city pitt.
    8-blah blah blah
9-the betting tables are open for which pens player throws the 1st dirty/cheap hit

  25. thirstyhap - May 1, 2013 at 5:43 PM

If Malkin picks his game up Sid won’t matter with all the trades they made and Malkin playing good sit back and relax Sid
