Discuss: Penguins dominate Islanders 5-0

May 1, 2013, 10:11 PM EDT

More than a few people thought that the high-scoring, red-hot New York Islanders might just pose a threat to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their first-round matchups. That gut instinct didn’t look too great after Game 1, which the Penguins won 5-0.

Let’s talk this one up.

  • Marty Reasoner delivered a questionable leg-to-leg hit on Jussi Jokinen (which we’ll feature in video soon enough). Is that suspension-material?
  • Can Evgeni Nabokov bounce back from a notably rough night?
  • Should the Penguins be that much more diligent with Sidney Crosby or merely let him return as soon as the doctors will allow it?
  • Is this a matter of “first game jitters” or an off night or are the Isles in big trouble?
  • Getting more specific, can John Tavares boost the Islanders enough to make this series competitive or will Pittsburgh continue to neutralize the Hart Trophy candidate?
  • Could this win just be evidence that the Penguins are the juggernaut that they looked like despite injuries and lineup changes throughout this season?
  • Marc-Andre Fleury gained his sixth career playoff shutout. Do you expect him to have a strong postseason after struggling mightily at times the last few postseasons?
  • Which East team poses the biggest threat to Pittsburgh? Could it be the Boston Bruins or someone else?

1 down. 15 more to go.

    • pens5829 - May 1, 2013 at 10:25 PM

      Elvis #1.

  2. haterzinc - May 1, 2013 at 10:16 PM

    Boston= biggest threat

    • laxman1944 - May 1, 2013 at 11:46 PM

Yep…..why even bother to show up for game two

      • steelpenbucs87 - May 2, 2013 at 9:19 AM

I think Boston is the biggest threat too, but I think the Caps and Rangers shouldn’t be taken lightly.

With that said I agree with laxman – if Boston thinks they’re just going to roll through the Leafs l think they’re in for a surprise, especially when they get to Toronto.

    • jdlinder11 - May 2, 2013 at 12:12 PM

I disagree. I think the caps are a bigger threat

  3. sjsharks66 - May 1, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Nice dirty hit at the end.

  4. malkamania71 - May 1, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Worried about Neal & Juicy. Hope they both are ready for next game. They looked great in every aspect tonight. Tavares is gonna need some ice after that. Roll Pens

    • jpelle82 - May 2, 2013 at 9:09 AM

i’m worried about neal, not so much jokinen. jokinen was milking it a bit i think, neal looked like he twisted or popped something.

  5. Stiller43 - May 1, 2013 at 10:20 PM

How bout them wishful thinkers that thought this series would be NY in 6?

Season series is now 5-1 burgh (the 1 was in the first week of the season), and the goal differential is ridiculous. Pens roll in 5 max. The bigger concerns are neal, juicy, croz, and orpik. For a cup, we’ll need a healthy squad.

    • orangandblack - May 2, 2013 at 7:26 AM

Other than delusional isles fans, who said it’d be NY in 6???? No one who watches the sport could possibly think that. As much as I’d like to see the Isles give the Pens an early exit, there’s no shot of that happening. They’ll be lucky to get to play 5 playoff games this year, but I’m only seeing 4 for NY, even without Crosby

  6. ironman721 - May 1, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Great start but I hope Neal is ok. That hit looked a little dirty at the end of the game. Let’s go Pens🐧❗

  7. hockeyfan28 - May 1, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Not much to discuss only team in the east playoffs I could honestly see giving Pittsburgh a series is
    the Washington capitals

  8. icelovinbrotha215 - May 1, 2013 at 10:23 PM

NYI: where you @? It’s going to be a short series if they keep this up.

  9. theageofquarrel - May 1, 2013 at 10:25 PM

O’Brien I will answer your question. The whole Islander team had a rough night.

    • theageofquarrel - May 1, 2013 at 10:31 PM

Plus if you got Tanner Glass scoring on you, yeah you got problems.

    • jpelle82 - May 2, 2013 at 9:15 AM

tavares had an especially bad night. there was no compete in his game whatsoever. he must have had at least 4 or 5 turnovers and was just physically beaten down all night. letang put him on his a$$ at least 3 times and morrow sent him flying about 15 feet in the third period too. nobody did a thing about it either.

  10. crashtheboards55 - May 1, 2013 at 10:27 PM

The intent was there from Reasoner to take Jokinen’s knee out but he missed. What a joke of a player. Can’t even make a dirty hit. Tavares got welcomed to the playoffs tonight. Still think he needs recognition for hart trophy.

  11. bcisleman - May 1, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Isles just did not show up. Nabby was given little help. For Flower to struggle, the opposition has to pressure him and the Isles didn’t. Pens are good enough that they might win this series easily even if the Isles put their best foot forward. I can overlook that but not this kind of effort. They need to be better.

    • phillyphanatic77 - May 1, 2013 at 10:39 PM

You were probably overvaluing the Isles talent when you said if they win this series they win the Cup. I’m rooting for the upset but they won’t even score a goal if they play like that again.

    • masterchiefnavy - May 1, 2013 at 10:52 PM

Sorry to tell you but Isles were outclassed tonight. Not really a contest,

  12. pittsburghfan71 - May 1, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Solid performance by the pens. Nobody had higher than a plus 2 which shows that it was a team effort in shutout

    • killerpgh - May 1, 2013 at 10:50 PM

2 of the 5 goals were on the PP. So the most any player could have been was a +3.

      • jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 12:49 AM

Why are people downvoting a fact?

      • jpelle82 - May 2, 2013 at 10:35 AM

they must not understand +/-. i had a guy in my fantasy hockey league whine about it all the time, just didnt know the pp doesnt count.

  13. pitpenguinsrulez - May 1, 2013 at 10:32 PM

Welcome to the playoffs Islanders! Tavares looked pretty damn butthurt at the end of the game. One has to wonder if the Pens might have possibly begun to break Nabby. Over playing him in the regular season will come back to burn the Isles. If we give them another beat down in Game 2 their spirits will be broken if not damaged badly. I’m also glad to see the 4th line contribute. Can’t wait for Game 2! Hopefully I can make it out of my dorm this weekend and make it to the Big Screen for the game(s)

  14. 19to77 - May 1, 2013 at 10:35 PM

Unlike a certain other losing team tonight, the Islanders obviously really tried to win (and, you know, actually got shots on goal) – but the difference in skill and the Penguins’ sheer depth was just too much to deal with. They got offense from all sorts of guys tonight and every time the Isles got a chance, Flower and the D handled it.

It’s not like the Isles played badly. The score makes it look that way, but they were obviously trying hard. They were just outmatched at everything despite their efforts.

  15. laxman1944 - May 1, 2013 at 10:46 PM

    So Far….So Good…….

  16. jr507 - May 1, 2013 at 10:47 PM

To no surprise there’s a lot of new names posting tonight. Very Pittsburgh.

Pens did dominate. Horrible call lead to a weak PP goal, but the next 3 were vintage Pitt. And when Glass scores…pathetic.

Us Isles fans will tip our cap, but spare us the dirty hit nonsense when a diving Finn tries to elude a clean check leading to a skate-on-skate trip. 5 was excessive- that should have been a minor. Maybe you guys know a bit about skate to skate with Cooke on the roster, eh?

To the Pens, diehards- congrats and enjoy gents. its your night but the series likely won’t be this easy going forward. If the French flower never gets challenged, you guys sure are dangerous though.

    • masterchiefnavy - May 1, 2013 at 10:55 PM

You’re right, the series will be easier after the Isle lay down the rest of the way. How about those Matt Martin-Douglas Murray encounters? Martin should stop before he gets really hurt.

    • theageofquarrel - May 1, 2013 at 11:01 PM

We have been here all along. Where have you been?

    • jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 12:51 AM

Whatever. Let the Crosby-Malkin fanboys enjoy it. Can’t really say much of anything after losing like that. Just gotta suck it up and come back for Game 2. After all, it’s just one game. Game 2 now is just absolutely must-win for NYI.

  17. tdrusher225 - May 1, 2013 at 10:47 PM

The Penguins are the only team where a player like James Neal goes down and they’ll be able to shrug it off like it’s nothing. Their depth is unreal.

    • laxman1944 - May 1, 2013 at 11:37 PM

      1 Game……….

  18. malkinrulez - May 1, 2013 at 10:50 PM

Reasoner should be suspended clear intent to injure.pens played a good smart game . Hope for more of the same in game 2.

    • jpelle82 - May 2, 2013 at 10:39 AM

not like it matters, its almost a favor by shanahan to capuano to suspend him…reasoner sucks. bad penalty cost them the 5 on 3 goal and then this cheap hit at the end too, he wouldve been sitting for game 2 anyway

  19. Stiller43 - May 1, 2013 at 10:58 PM

Please enlighten me to all the “new” pens fans posting here tonight. Name names or shut up about it. All i see if people that comment on the vast majority of pens articles. Maybe you dont read those.

  20. jonkchar - May 1, 2013 at 10:59 PM

great win for the Pens. I think we’ll see closer games, but the Penguins have the depth to play a full 60+

  21. valoisjoeybfeld69 - May 1, 2013 at 11:08 PM

Welcome to playoff hockey boys. Pens have 2 number 1 lines and 2 number 3 lines. Tough to play a team with so much talent. Best thing that happened to the Pens this year is the Flyers not making the playoffs. Hope the Pens go up against the Caps. These guys have been playing playoff hockey for the last 20 games of the season.

    • laxman1944 - May 1, 2013 at 11:40 PM

      shine up the cup boys……..

      It!s in the bag…….

      • jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 12:54 AM

I can’t wait for you guys to lose, whoever beats you. I bet you never watched a game of hockey until Crosby was handed to the Pens by the NHL.

      • jpelle82 - May 2, 2013 at 10:44 AM

laxman’s a flyers fan, no one is beating his team any time soon…i picked up on his sarcasm here

  22. bobhpine - May 1, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Loudest game I’ve been to at Consol. The Islanders are completely overwhelmed. They aren’t winning 4 of the next 6. Nabokov wasn’t right after getting his forehead pulverized by Iggy’s snapshot. Oh, and Matt Cooke is annihilating Tavares. No shots for Tavares. Could have been 9-0.

  23. gertrudegoat - May 1, 2013 at 11:32 PM

Pens dominated & show no respect at all for Islanders. They were not back on their heels for one shift the entire game.

    • laxman1944 - May 1, 2013 at 11:42 PM

      series over eh?……..pass the cup…eh?…..hhhmmmmm

  24. chanceoffleury1 - May 1, 2013 at 11:40 PM

Bennett is making it harder and harder to justify TK cracking the lineup. Rookie or not, how do you take out a guy who is playing better than ever? Bennett contributes more than TK, and getting him experience as long as he’s playing well is more important than the Pens trying not to hurt TK’s feelings by scratching him every night.

Neal has me a little worried though. Can him and Malkin play like 1 whole week together without getting injured!? Their chemistry is arguably the best in the league and it’d be nice if the Pens could use it to their advantage on a regular basis!

    • jpelle82 - May 2, 2013 at 10:45 AM

tk comes in now that neal will be out undoubtedly. tk goes to the 4th line though and bennett should go with malkin – kunitz

  25. malkinrulez - May 1, 2013 at 11:47 PM

jr507 since when is sticking out ur leg considered a check?

  26. laxman1944 - May 1, 2013 at 11:51 PM

    Settle…….it’s game 1…….

    • mordock57 - May 1, 2013 at 11:56 PM

You’re right. It’s only Game 1. In Game 2… the Pens are shooting for 6 goals, minimum. No need to strain themselves so early in the series.

    • jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 1:52 AM

You’re right. If the Islanders win on Friday, it’s a Best-of-5 series with the Islanders having home-ice advantage. In a way, it’s better for the Islanders to get it out of their system tonight. This was the worst possible thing that could happen. They’ll bounce back Friday night.

And if not? Great season, lost to a better team. See you next year when JT, Hamonic, Strome, Okposo, Bailey, etc. are another year older and more experienced.

      • chanceoffleury1 - May 2, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Just remember, the Islanders are *supposed* to be better on the road. So can you really count on a “home ice advantage” to help them out?

  27. jeff10461 - May 2, 2013 at 12:17 AM

Why is anybody giving the NHL credibility! Nevermind losing half the season, we’re all mindless zombies!!!

  28. President Charles Logan - May 2, 2013 at 12:20 AM

why are flyer fans sitting around on their computer’s logging onto this site making comments when they can be out golfing or playing softball lol??……………..

    • jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 12:55 AM

Your screen name is the best thing I’ve ever seen. You are the man. I am watching 24 right this second.

    • hockeyfan28 - May 2, 2013 at 1:14 AM

Thats rich coming from you who never ever posted on flyers topics…. Why didn’t you pick a better 24 president to call yourself like president Allison Taylor

      • jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 1:43 AM

…..she’s the alternative President from 24 you mention? Guess I’m gonna have to change my screen name to President David Palmer.

      • President Charles Logan - May 2, 2013 at 5:19 PM

difference is, the pens are a playoff team, flyer fans got no reason to post on a playoff topic they arent involved with.. and why didnt you choose a more appropriate screenname like “finally_out_of_the_gay_closet”

  29. jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 12:53 AM

For everyone making a big deal about tonight: yes, the Penguins are obviously the better team, but after all, it’s only a 1-0 series. If I were a Penguins fan, I’d stop laughing and talking like it’s over, because if the Isles win Friday, it’s a brand new series with NYI holding home-ice advantage. Yes they’re underdogs, but I can’t imagine they’ll come out this flat on Friday. Have some class until then, because you will look really bad when the Isles come back like they’ve done every time they’ve ever played you in the playoffs.

  30. Stiller43 - May 2, 2013 at 1:05 AM

What do playoff series more than 20 years ago (which is the last time they met) have to do with now? Why dont YOU shut your trap until your team either a) finishes in the upper half of the conference or b) shows up to play a playoff game, because tonight was an embarassment

    • jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 1:50 AM

1.) There’s a reply button. It says “REPLY.”

2.) It shows that just because you win Game 1 does not mean you will win the series. And it’s funny hearing garbage talk from a Penguins fan, who probably doesn’t know anything from before the Crosby days. Your whole fanbase is full of bandwagoners. Your boy Mario needed to poach Trottier from the Islanders to win a Cup. Your team was the laughstock of the league before Crosby and was frequently mentioned as a relocation candidate.

Please go read about the history of the two franchises we’re discussing. Islander fans don’t have to shut up to anybody considering they are the greatest American dynasty in hockey history. Give me a call when your team wins 4 straight cups and 19 straight playoff series.

And before you lose it with “why does history matter,” it matters for people who root for teams with a great history :). 1975, 1982, 1993…glorious years. If you think this year, when you have Crosby (eventually), Malkin, Neal, Iginla, Letang, Kunitz, etc. outweighs those other year’s, you’re crazy. You guys SHOULD dominate this series. So if you want to taunt Islander fans, whose team had an incredible, surprisingly fun season, go ahead. It’ll just make it much sweeter when you choke to the Bruins later on.

      Oh: and David Volek.

      • mazblast - May 2, 2013 at 11:25 AM

There’s nothing like living in the far distant past. Look how many of the current players weren’t even born in 1982, let alone 1975.

I’ll bet you’re a Yankees fan, too, the kind whose sole talking point is “27”.

      • mordock57 - May 2, 2013 at 11:26 AM

Dude, I want some of what you’re smoking. You think Trottier was the key to winning the Cup in ’91? Seriously? And you’re getting on Pittsburgh fans about being homers? Loved having him on the team, but a guy named Ron Francis was a far bigger impact acquisition. Exactly what was glorious about 1993? Yeah, the Isles won against the Pens… and that’s it. Big whoop. As for being bandwagoners, most of us who are old enough have been watching Pens hockey since Mario was drafted in 1984. When Mario left, we had Jagr winning scoring titles. Then when Mario came back, he was still the best. Then Crosby… best in the world. He goes down, Malkin is still lighting it up. We’ve ALWAYS had a reason to watch…. oh, and this “bandwagon” town just posted the best American TV ratings in hockey history. Keep talking, moron.

    • jl9830 - May 2, 2013 at 1:54 AM

And they did finish in the upper half of the conference…they’re in the playoffs. Jesus Christ.

  31. Stiller43 - May 2, 2013 at 2:28 AM

Not sure where you went to school, but 8 out of 15 is not in the upper half. Sorry bud.

  32. csilojohnson - May 2, 2013 at 7:05 AM

Jl having trouble finishing a thought? Was 12 back to back posts really nessesary?

  33. antkowiak666 - May 2, 2013 at 9:12 AM

WOW!!the Pens beat the Isles and all the Pens fans are boasting like they beat the Caps or Bruins. the Isles are a team you should drub, nothing to get to excited about really.

    • chanceoffleury1 - May 2, 2013 at 11:59 AM

Well the Pens are 6-0 against the Caps and Bruins, and were only 3-1 against the Islanders. Haha, if anything they should go into a series against the Bruins or Caps more confident!

  34. koontang11 - May 2, 2013 at 9:32 AM

so many tried using ‘playoffs are a whole new season’ to reason why the pens could falter..well that applies to all the teams the pens play too..the islanders are far too inexperienced and they’ll bow out in 5 max

  35. mazblast - May 2, 2013 at 11:27 AM

Fellow Pens fans, let’s not get carried away. It was a wonderful win, but it’s only one game in the first round. Our team is SUPPOSED to beat the Islanders.
