Penguins’ Orpik skates, game-time decision for Game 1

Pittsburgh could be looking at a healthy defensive unit for Game 1 if all goes well.

The team reported defenseman Brooks Orpik skated this morning and would be a game-time decision for Game 1 against the Islanders tomorrow night. Orpik was hurt a week ago today against the Sabres after playing just 6:44 worth of game time.

Of course, the Pens are currently still without Sidney Crosby up front but their defense is almost fully back with Orpik the lone holdout. Paul Martin made his return to action in their final regular season game against Carolina on Saturday. The Pens could sure use a fully healthy defense to help contain John Tavares and Matt Moulson in the first-round of the playoffs.

With the quickness of Murray and Orpik on the blueline, the Pens should have no problem with the slow play of Grabner, Tavares, and Moulson,

They’re still quicker than your wit.

Ok I broke my own rule and fed a troll – enjoy your biscuit.

      • rsl22 - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:09 PM

Ha. I saw an Orpik headline and I had to take the shot. I learned from Gretz.

The Pens will not win on long Island this is a seven gamer the winner being too beat up to win the in the second round ! My plan is looking good so even in a possible first round win the Pens lose in the end ,,,,,,,,,,,,SAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEET !

    • upyoursnfu - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:45 PM

What happened to your plan of the Flyers making the 8th spot and beating the Pens in the first round? Seriously….what happened?

Go back under your bridge until next year troll..

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:59 PM

Keep wetting yourself over that dream.

  3. steelers88 - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:19 PM

    What about Crosby?

  4. whammy71 - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:28 PM

Not worried about either at this point. The team is deep and can handle the NYI as is. Anyone who says anything else is nothing but a hater.

    • laxman1944 - May 1, 2013 at 9:09 AM

The playoffs are a different beast…..the way some of the comments are written it’s as if they should just hand over the cup and be done with it.

Y’all think NYI is not a tad geeked up for being in the playoffs for the first time in….hell I don’t even know.

I watched The Blues pound the crap out current champs last night.

Just sit back and enjoy…..playoff hockey is second to none.

Pitt’s forwards and centers are in pretty good shape but the blue line is banged up coming in and Fleury has not been the wall he’s been in the past……..just trying to be a bit of a voice of reason….Have fun……my guys have tee times to worry about now……sigh…

      • jpelle82 - May 1, 2013 at 11:27 AM

banged up? everyone’s healthy except orpik but he’s played through worse. even if he misses time, engelland or despres will be in and both are good enough to be in the 2nd pairing on most teams including the islanders. letang, martin, orpik, eaton, murray, niskanen – with engelland, despres and bortuzzo in the waiting. pens are as healthy on the blue line as they could possibly ask for and fleury won the cup with a .908 – he’s playing at a .917 right now.

      • laxman1944 - May 1, 2013 at 12:10 PM

        ok……Good luck than……

  5. csilojohnson - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:30 PM

As long as Eaton suits up the Pens have a chance.

Piere McGuire just seems lost without sid I hope for Piere’s sake sid gets back on the ice soon !

    • rsl22 - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:35 PM

How long into Sid’s first game does it take Pierre to mention that Sid played for Rimouski Oceanic?

  7. steelers88 - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:42 PM

Im going to say that the Penguins will have to win at least two rounds in the playoffs to see Sid play again this season. The reason why I say this is because the screws have to properly set before he can even attempt to play. That could be in a week or in 3 months. So until then Sid can’t do too much.

    • hockeywithdrawal - May 1, 2013 at 8:05 AM

Six weeks, was the most knowledgeable/credible estimate I’ve heard…but to your point, that is an estimate, it’s specific to the person and the healing process. It’s complicated in part due to the strap on the helmet putting pressure on the jaw, but he has been wearing that and it hasn’t seemed to set him back. If he plays, I hope it’s limited minutes unless it’s necessary for more (to start).

  8. modellforprez - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:43 PM

Brooksy will be ready. he knows whats at stake. and will come out and hit tavares like stamp bag stankos.

  9. Stiller43 - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:45 PM

Didnt Sid have an appt today to possibly clear him to play? Any news on that?

    • JoeAvg - Apr 30, 2013 at 10:03 PM

The appointment was after the today’s skate so the media jackels have to wait until tomorrow to gather around their prey (as if that wasn’t planned).

I don’t know why this originally posted to the wrong article. What’s up with that PHT?

      • hockeywithdrawal - May 1, 2013 at 8:06 AM

That’s happened to me before too – no biggie you just look like an idiot to the people reading the other article’s comments, which I’m used to anyway.

  10. steelers88 - Apr 30, 2013 at 9:49 PM

I think the Trib said that the Pens are prepared to play game 1 without Crosby.

  11. Stiller43 - Apr 30, 2013 at 10:30 PM

    Steelers88,

That article is titled that, but it still says things like “IF crosby gets clearance when he visits the dr on tuesday” and what not…

I guess its still a mystery as of now. Im going to game 2, so he better be out there!!!
