Ilya Bryzgalov sounds off on Philly media in grand fashion

One guy who takes a lot of heat in Philly for the performance of the Flyers is goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Today he met with the media at the team’s locker clean-out day, he made sure to let the assembled media know his thoughts on them.

Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post has a collection of the quotes from the Russian netminder who didn’t pull any punches. Here’s a sample of what he had to say.

On being blamed for losses:

“You guys just here to blame someone. You never look yourselves in the mirror, eh? You’re always good. You never make the mistakes. Your articles are always perfect. In reality, what have you done for this city? If you ask yourself, what have you done besides only criticize? Not much.”

On media coverage in Philly:

“It’s just ridiculous. Just ridiculous. Sometimes you’re reading and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, who is this lunatic?’ What are they writing about. It was nothing close to the truth or close to related to hockey. You read this and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got to deal with these people every day.’ I’ve said it before, guys. Before you’re writing something you’ve got to read what you’re writing. I’m two years here. I never saw it like good article with everything, like, ‘Flyers lose the game because this, this, this, this, this. They need to improve their game like this, this, this or this.’ I never. That’s what called professionalism. It’s like, ‘OK, this reporter knows hockey. He knows what he talking about.’”

There’s a bit more he had to say but these were the choice quotes.

As for him being bought out of his contract or what moves the team will make in the summer, he says none of that is up to him but he wants to be back. Here’s to hoping he is just so he can try to top this rant again next summer.

    • babykaby - Apr 29, 2013 at 8:10 AM

Personally I agree with him. These so called reporters are always misquoting, taking things out of context, only relaying little snippets (as in this article), and then they get upset when someone calls them on it. We as a society expect news guys to give us the truth, not half truths. We will also believe most of what they tell us. Bryz is a bit looney, but he was right to tell these guys what he thought. I like him now, before I just thought he was crazy.

These sports reporters, as well as the tv/radio analysts should judge themselves just as harshly as they tend to judge everyone else. If they did, a large number of them would be long gone by now.

      • ryanrockzzz - Apr 30, 2013 at 7:21 AM

What articles were you reading this year? The ones I was reading coming out of Philly were actually trying to promote Bryz as one of the teams best players during most of the season, when he in fact WAS NOT.

Newspapers actually do have pretty strict standards on just making stuff up believe it or not. The half truth is what Bryz was saying, how every article is a “bad one.” That’s just a boldface lie lol.

Television analysts have a bit more freedom to voice their opinion, and sometimes they are a little harsh, but honestly, the team and Bryz sucked this year, so I don’t know how far they had to strentch the truth on anything.

  2. jkulha86 - Apr 28, 2013 at 3:21 PM

Love him or hate him, he speaks the truth on this. But it’s not limited to the Philly media, most journalism now a days lacks truth or professionalism. It’s all about getting attention and creating a story when there isn’t one.

    • hockeyflow33 - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:38 PM

The Boston media ran Thomas out of town last year because they didn’t like his political stance. Wait for your media to turn up their attempts to run this guy out of town.

It’s a shame too because he’s a pretty good goalie.

  4. aaronmushrush - Apr 28, 2013 at 3:27 PM

unfortunately I agree. Fly guys had way more problems than the overworked Bryz. Bryz is spot on here as sports journalists everywhere have forgotten to do their homework and construct legitimacy to their articles.

    • nyrfan - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:50 PM

The articles in todays papers are way too opinionated. The writers include too much of their personal ideas or theories. I don’t care, if I’m Bryz reading negative thoughts about my play. I’m ticked off. His family reads it and hear all the rumors. I’d give them a piece of my mind too. What’s with the term “Rant”. The journalists love to call it a rant. Most of their stories are just a big Rant. When my Rangers lost a game in Buffalo, the Rangers coach John Tortarella was in rare form. He was not happy with the way his team played and he wears his heart on his sleeve so he was brutally honest. He also may have given a few reporters an attitude too, but for a week all you heard about was Torts “Rant”! It took on a life of its own. He wasn’t Ranting and neither did Brygalov. It’s not easy to disconnect yourself from the game and be a politician for the reporters. Hockey players are people too and these so called Rants are an example of this. I like hearing players that forget the model for Public Relations and talk the truth. Torts is no different from me or you and the way in which he gives a presser is the evidence.
I know I wrote a lot here. One could even say I was “Ranting”. The fact of the Bryzgalov matter is simple. They pay him a ton and Mason way out performed him. I guess it’s still a matter of opinion but Mason has looked more comfortable in the Flyers style of play. I have to think Philly’s brass will see it this way and will likely want to buy Bryzgalov out of his contract to create some space against the cap. There’s no mystery that the Flyers have a mess on their hands and with an underperforming team, they need to make some moves. They have a good core of young players. One good thing to come out of this season is in finding Mason. If the Flyers can get away from Bryz and Pronger, they’d have some space to add in Free Agency. Like I was saying though, they have scorers like Giroix and Vorcek, Coutourier. They need a shut down defenseman and maybe a veteran winger. I have a feeling they might go after Vanek. He and Buffalo seem ready to part ways. That’s just a hunch but I think Vanek is in Philly next year and Bryz gets the Buyout treatment. I’m a Ranger fan so I don’t know the team like Philly fans do but it’s not the same without the Ranger vs Flyers battles. I just don’t remember if the Flyers used a buyout yet or if they still have both. If they have both, they should use them this summer. They have Mason so Bryz is expendable. They’ve got a core to win with and the way they’ve played at the end is proof. Need to stay healthy and aquire some depth on defense.

You hit the nail on the head. Writers add cute little digs and personal opinions to stand out in the blog/writers crowd. Like I said on a BR questionnaire a while back…most of these people reporting now-a-days need to go to Journalism school to be taught to REPORT and be OBJECTIVE.

Sports reporting has turned into a different version of ‘Entertainment Tonight’..forget about the nuts & bolts of the sport they are reporting and just go to the sensationalistic side of the story. Most of these so called reporters aren’t even versed in the rules of the game, let alone knowing what goes on WITHIN the game…they just pick a controversial angle and go from there.

Bryzgalov is right, there is very little professionalism left in reporting today…except for the old timers. How do these new guys expect to be respected when they show no respect to the players?

Most of these new ‘reporters’ should be writing to the National Enquirer.

  5. phillyphanatic77 - Apr 28, 2013 at 3:34 PM

I hope this was directed at Tim Panaccio. The guy’s been covering hockey for decades and still has no clue what he’s talking about. Pronger and Richards both despised him and it looks like Bryz is hopping on that train. Although he’s speaking truthfully (I dislike most of the hockey writers in this city), it probably isn’t the best time for an outburst. Afterall, management is deciding whether to bring him back and they already reprimanded him last season for this kind of stuff.

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 28, 2013 at 6:21 PM

It’s start with Pinach but it doesn’t stop there. Lisa Hillary and John Bourk don’t know a lick about hockey. And what about Frank Seravalli? The only people that seem to know anything about hockey in this town is Al Morganti and Sarah Baicker. You would think this city could find more knowledgeable ‘experts/insiders.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 28, 2013 at 7:12 PM

I’I not a fan of Seravalli, Boruk, or Pinach but I have to say I think Lisa Hillary does a solid job. She’s from Ottawa and worked with Capitals before she ended up here, so she’s been around the sport for awhile. She’s pretty knowledgeable, IMO. And the same with Baicker. I’d rather read her articles than Panaccio or Boruk anyday. Maybe there should be more women reporting on hockey in Philadelphia.

      • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 28, 2013 at 8:38 PM

Well something has to change. You find more knowledge about the game in the comments’ section than in the ‘articles’ written on CSN, Inq., etc. Having Center Ice for the last couple of years, it’s been a pleasure to see/hear other games and experts (especially those of Canadian backing). It’s night and day the professionalism displayed. All I can say is that no one in the DelVal should acquire knowledge directly through the Philly media. You will be misguided.

“It’s just ridiculous. Just ridiculous. Sometimes you’re reading and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, who is this lunatic?’ What are they writing about. It was nothing close to the truth or close to related to hockey.

im just wondering if this comment was directed at eddie munster aka tim panaccio…
because anybody who has read his articles knows that hes a complete fraud and is fos and is a pos.
heres go to hoping eddie munster is relieved of his duties over the summer. his articles are just plain stupid and imo thoughtless bable of a guy who needs to get some poonany.

  7. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Apr 28, 2013 at 3:35 PM

there indeed are very few members of the written media that know hockey very well. so, what have we learned from his quotes? not much beside the fact that he just shot himself in the foot, and he certainly is not the sharpest guy on the roster and that he’s more entertaining off the ice than he is on the ice.

  8. valoisvipers - Apr 28, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Good for Bryz, enough garbage written by stupid reporters and their dumb questions.

  9. mustbechris - Apr 28, 2013 at 3:56 PM

Not really….the majority of the fan base knows this team needs quite a few pieces so please don’t lump us altogether….thank you

  15. ironcity6pak - Apr 28, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Haha teams locker clean-out day, that’s all I heard. The rest of the article is blah blah blah.

  16. dolanster - Apr 28, 2013 at 4:35 PM

The problem is once the hometown media thinks they’ve got a whipping boy who hates them it just will continue to go downhill. Just ask Tim Thomas. This crew will ride Bryz out of town, justly or not. Too bad.

  17. puckmepuckyou - Apr 28, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Maybe not. He has spoken his mind and should continue to do so. F the media, everyone who knows hockey knows Tim P is a trash writer. The problem is the half wit bandwagoners who regurgitate his garbage. Bryz has one more year before a decision must be made so expect him back. Inconsistent goal tending was just the tip of the crap brown iceberg this year.

  18. steelers88 - Apr 28, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Wait why would the Philadelphia media blame Bryzgalov for the Flyers loses? I’m sorry but that just doesn’t make any sense! Bryzgalov was actually pretty good this year. He did kind of burn out down the stretch but that is because the Flyers played him basically the whole season.

    • laxman1944 - Apr 28, 2013 at 7:59 PM

Agreed, he had a darn good year just played him too much…..oh yeah…..our defense sucked

  21. pdxneedsnhl - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:10 PM

Right from the pro athlete handbook, when things go wrong and you don’t do your job blame the media.

    • hockeyflow33 - Apr 28, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Not what he said at all but at least you’re able to read some of the words

  22. icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:15 PM

What Bryz is saying is the truth. Our media heads do more bashing and homer-ism than actually analyzing the game. That being said, Bryz is his own worst enemy. Our media will continue to do what they do because 1) Bryz makes for an entertaining sound bite and 2) Bryz reads the articles, twitter posts, etc. If the guy just focused on stopping the puck, the Philly media wouldn’t have much material. Ah. Never a dull moment in Philadelphia sports.

  23. eagles512 - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Can’t argue-the media is terrible here.

    • hockeyflow33 - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:37 PM

Must be a local media writer who thumbed you down haha

  24. hockeyflow33 - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:36 PM

100%, not enough accountability in the media and there doesn’t seem to be anyone writing about hockey who knows the game.

If you’re a writer why not attend some USA hockey coaching clinics or help coach some prep school summer hockey? I’m sure the programs would love to have the coverage and to help educate the general public.

    • laxman1944 - Apr 28, 2013 at 8:15 PM

What do Canadian writers think of the state of the flyers?……seriously

      • hockeyflow33 - Apr 28, 2013 at 8:20 PM

  25. blastardo - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Bryzgalov had a great year in Phoenix before he went to Philly. Bobrovsky had a great year after he left Philly. Something doesn’t add up here.

I feel sorry for Mason next year as he’ll be the next scapegoat for all of Philly’s problems. Mind you he’s not as good as Bob or Bryz so there might be some legitimacy to that claim.

    • President Charles Logan - Apr 28, 2013 at 7:23 PM

but nooooo mason’s been “unbeatable” so far in these all mighty important games down the stretch according to the disco ball gang

  26. crazemastercraze - Apr 28, 2013 at 5:55 PM

Professional athlete who makes millions of dollars every year can’t handle a little teasing from the media. He’s completely Americanized: words hurt him before sticks and stones. Big pu$$y

    • hockeyflow33 - Apr 28, 2013 at 6:11 PM

That’s not the issue at all. You have people writing about a sport they know absolutely nothing about and then the average fan quotes these opinions as obvious fact. Anyone who has played the game at the lowest level would be able to tell you Bryz was hardly the defining reason for Philly’s poor play this year and yet he’s the scapegoat because the media sees goals go past the goalie.

Rather than digging into an actual article about why the team’s back-checking, breakout or face-offs are the problem they just write the laziest way possible.

  27. coronakid76 - Apr 28, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Considering what else is out there on the market we might as well bring him back. Restructure his contract, bring down the duration / dollar amount. We have 2 legitimate goalies now so he doesn’t have to play every game to have a chance to win. Give him 45 games and Mason the other 37. Bryz isn’t the sole reason this team Sh%^ the bed. We have a terrible blue line period!!! Coburn gets beat all the time, Timmo gets burnt towards the end of the games. Mez cant stay healthy and we are patchwork everywhere else. Keep Ollie, Gus and Manning for the season and go from there. They are Younger, have more to prove and played well over the last month. Briere never found his game after his wrist injury. G and Hartnell were lost without Jagr this year and the other 1/2 of our team had a sophmore slump. It’s also bad when we are calling a ZERO offensive player like Rinaldo a key player. He is only on the team cause we dont’ have enough talent here to send him back to the phantoms. Rosetree is the same player with a better offensive upside. Hall looked decent as well. Terrible season. Philly media plays both sides of the coin…I cant stand reading the paper, listening to talk radio after a loss…..Bash Bash Bash….The team should just take part in a media ban next season. Too much in house issues get aired out by the media…

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 28, 2013 at 7:38 PM

If teams could just restructure contracts don’t you think the likes of Luongo, Gomez, and Redden would have done that? You can’t just reduce the years or cap hit on a contract you don’t like. NHL contracts are 100% guaranteed. That is why they included two buyouts in the new CBA, because teams were getting hosed with dead money. So it’s not as simple as saying let’s just reduce Bryzgalov’s term and salary… that’s why he’s a serious buyout candidate. We’re stuck with him for the duration of his deal unless they buy him out this summer or the next. I don’t think they do it this summer but I think they have to next year bc you can’t get stuck with that albatross contract when Bryz is 37 and even worse than he is now.

As for the D… Manning is not ready to be a full-time NHLer. He needs atleast another season with the Phantoms. Gus and Lauridsen were pretty impressive but neither really projects to more than a 5th defenseman. That is why Holmgren must acquire a top-notch defender this summer. Schenn, Grossmann, and Timonen are all solid. Coburn had a terrible year but he usually follows up bad seasons with good ones. He’s streaky like that. As for Mezsaros, if they can find a taker then ship him out for anything. He’s played like he doesn’t want to get hurt and it’s led to more injuries. If no one wants him then he’s gone next summer, as he only has one year left on his deal. I’d say the go into next season with an acquired dman, Kimmo, Schenn, Grossmann, Coburn, and the young guys battling for the 6th spot. And who knows, maybe they draft a defender and he wins a job in camp.

      • laxman1944 - Apr 28, 2013 at 8:19 PM

        I just can’t with coby anymore…..sigh……

      • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 29, 2013 at 1:12 AM

Not saying I like Coburn but management and Lavy sure do. He’s going nowhere. A player with that size and speed should be much better; I think they’re still waiting for that.

  28. csilojohnson - Apr 28, 2013 at 6:38 PM

Totally agree with Bryz. The media is a joke. More concerned with breaking the story first then the facts themselves. Money is more important then integrity.
None of that matters though. Philly is notoriously hard on their sports teams. “The city of brotherly love” was meant to be sarcasm. (See I could be a journalist too)
Bryz shouldve known this. Suck it up. Look at your account balance if you start getting upset.

  29. 19to77 - Apr 28, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Preach it, Breezy! So, so true.

I know he’s slamming Philly media specifically, but it seems like every team has to deal with awful, ignorant, “I’m here to blame you and get angry despite the fact that I don’t even know the sport” dickheads instead of knowledgeable, balanced, professional journalists. Sports writing is apparently seen as a field where you neither need to know sports nor how to write. Glad to see someone who doesn’t just sit there and take it.

  30. President Charles Logan - Apr 28, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Bryzgalov is too much of an outside distraction to the team at this point , bite the bullet and buy him out , get this soap opera over and done with and start re-tooling . Philly is not a patient fan-base for a total rebuilding system

The Flyers will never lift the Cup as long as I am alive. I was born in December 1975, 7 months after the Flyer won their last Cup.

And I do not plan on dying anytime soon. So suck it, Philly!!!

  37. phillies816 - Apr 29, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Bryz is right. The media is garbage in Philly and most other places. Ever try reading the Philly papers? No wonder they are going under. Sportstalk in Philly is garbage too. Bryz was far from the top of reasons why the Flyers underachieved…AGAIN. How an organization who hasn’t won jack squat since the mid 70’s and continues to have an owner trotting out the same tired lines explaining away continued failure and his continued kissing of the Flyer fans rears(aka suckering them into buying tickets) hasn’t had that fan base revolt or even show a decent amount of anger is beyond me. Almost cult like. The Flyers do alot of good off the ice for Philadelphia. Now it’s time to actually get something done ON the ice. Sorry for the rant
