Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones is the top-ranked North American skater heading into this summer’s draft, according to Central Scouting.

After Jones, it’s Halifax Mooseheads center Nathan MacKinnon in second and MacKinnon’s teammate, winger Jonathan Drouin, in third.

“These are players you can build your team around, so what kind of player do you want to build with?” NHL Director of Central Scouting Dan Marr said. “Do you want to build from the back-end out, or do you want to build up the middle? There’s no steadfast answer, so the projection is what the player will mean to the team.

“We think Seth’s game is still going to develop, as are MacKinnon and Drouin, but we had no reason to remove Seth from that No. 1 spot. We do feel Nathan will get stronger and continue to develop.”

The NHL’s draft lottery is set for Monday. And remember, this year every team that misses the playoffs has a shot to get the first overall pick.

Jones would be perfect for the Flyers

    • travishenryskid - Apr 24, 2013 at 11:47 AM

Jones would be perfect for anyone.

      • rsl22 - Apr 24, 2013 at 11:49 AM

        Couldn’t be more true.

anything can happen with the lottery this year i guess…14 teams in the hat, flyers are 8th worst right now with a 3.6% chance of getting the #1 pick….they should be tanking these games but they keep coming out and playing like real men and winning.

      • rsl22 - Apr 24, 2013 at 12:35 PM

Isn’t there some sort of, can’t move higher than 5 spots clause? I thought I read that one somewhere, but don’t feel like researching it. Any takers?

      • jpelle82 - Apr 24, 2013 at 12:47 PM

dont think so, its a weighted system but any of the 14 could theoretically get it still.

      • chanceoffleury1 - Apr 24, 2013 at 12:50 PM

@rsl22 I thought it was that every non-playoff team has a chance at the number 1 overall, but after that you cannot rise or fall 3 picks from where you finish overall. So it would work like the Flyers could get the overall first pick but Colorodo won’t pick any lower than 4th overall, and somebody like Detroit/Columbus couldn’t pick higher than 11th if they don’t get the first overall. I could be totally wrong though…..

      • chanceoffleury1 - Apr 24, 2013 at 12:56 PM

okay, haven’t checked the bottom standings for like 2 weeks, obviously. Florida is in last place nowadays, so sub them in for Colorodo in my post. They wouldn’t pick lower than 4th.

Top defence prospect sonce some guy named Pronger is what I’ve heard. If he is 80% of Pronger I’d be happy.

      • jpelle82 - Apr 24, 2013 at 12:59 PM

i think its only a 1 slot move but i could be wrong. if you dont get the 1 pick you essentially are where you are normally in the order.

If the flyers don’t get very very lucky and draft jones, I don’t really see them keeping this pick.

I really see them grabbing Jordan Subban in round 2 though.

    • jpelle82 - Apr 24, 2013 at 2:47 PM

who would you want them to trade it for though? not that many (if any at all) top 6 forwards out there worth a 1st rd pick and the blue line market isnt that great either.

Joe Sakic taught this kid how to skate.

    • jpelle82 - Apr 24, 2013 at 12:45 PM

kudos to his dad. let his kid play hockey because thats what he wanted to do at 6 yrs old. popeye probably didnt know a thing about hockey, he didnt force him into playing basketball, and went the extra mile and used his connections to get him up with joe sakic. black kid from texas is about to be the number one draft pick in the nhl. pretty awesome, dad’s gotta be proud.

Wasn’t impressed with him during the WJC’s Trouba stole that show! Media hyped this kid up to be the next Brian Leetch he’s decent at best right now.

Glad you’re not a scout for my team. Jones is a stud, you gotta look at his entire body of work.

  5. hy3rid28 - Apr 24, 2013 at 4:19 PM

flyers aren’t going to trade their pick if anything I’m hoping they move down in the draft if they have to in order to get McNabb’s nephew nurse

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 24, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Luckily for the Flyers there is no shortage a blue chip defense prospects in this draft. Jones, Nurse, Theodore, Pulock, Ristolainen, etc. They should have a few of those guys to choose from.
