Habs coach Therrien: ‘We need Carey Price to be our leader’

The way Michel Therrien sees it, the success of the Montreal Canadiens comes down to one thing.

His goalie.

That’s what the Habs head coach suggested prior to Tuesday’s game against the Devils — saying as Price goes, so does his team.

“We need Carey Price to be our leader,” Therrien told NHL.com. “We need Carey to be our best player, and players will feed from him.

“That’s the most important thing.”

Therrien’s words will likely raise some eyebrows, beacuse Price has been anything but Montreal’s best player lately. His month of April has been especially poor, posting a 3-6-1 record with a 3.75 GAA and .872 save percentage.

Those numbers were the byproduct of two bad losses to Philly (5-3 on Apr. 3, 7-3 on Apr. 15) and a pair of 5-1 losses to Toronto and Washington.

What’s more, Price has been yanked in two of Montreal’s last five games — though to his credit, he hasn’t lost the faith of his teammates.

That’s not to say he hasn’t lost the faith of some fans.

Price was booed/jeered during Saturday’s loss to Washington, which drew the ire of defenseman Josh Gorges.

“I’ve never understood [booing] in your home building,” Gorges told the Montreal Gazette. “The guy’s been standing up for us. He’s been outstanding for us for years. And this isn’t on him, are you kidding me? This is on all of us.

“I take offence to [the heckling] because he’s a good friend of mine, he’s a teammate and I know his character and his pride.

“He’s out there battling every night to be his best and we let him down.”

Most overrated goalie in the league. 34th in the league in save percentage, 29th in goals-against average. Should’ve kept Halak.

There are only 4 goalies I would rather have in my net over Price (maybe not in the month of April, but nonetheless)

    1) Lunqvist – 6.875 Cap Hit
    2) Rinne – 7.0 Cap Hit
    3) Rask – 3.5 Cap Hit
    4) Quick – 5.8 Cap Hit
    5) Price – 5.5 Cap hit

    In comparison –
    Luongo 6.714 Cap Hit
    Kipper 5.0 Cap Hit
Halak, who has done nothing this year, 4.5 Cap hit
    Backtrom 6.0 Cap Hit
Ward 6.5 (who will most likely be backing up Carey in 2014)

Price is definitely not the most overrated goalie in the league. Just look at Bryz! He carries a cap hit of 6.5!!!! First point you made is already false.

Carey makes what he should make. And in my opinion, the Ws count more the the SV% and the GAA. And in that respect he is top 8.

I don’t care about cap hit…I am talking about talent. Head over to nhl.com, bring up the stats and tell me if I am wrong.
You make a good point about Bryzgalov…so lets say he’s one of the most overrated goaltenders.

Stats can be viewed in a vacuum. Have you seen Price play more than once? Guy has serious skills and is as calm, cool, and collected as an NHL goalie can be. I’d take him over any goalie named above not playing for NY Rangers.

I agree with your points but Bryzgalovs cap hit is actually $5.67mil. His salary is 6.5. Still he’s paid to be elite and he’s simply mediocre. I wouldn’t call him overrated though, bc everyone knows he’s an average goalie.

Maybe the police for the safety of the Habs, should insist that visiting teams are only allowed to shoot beach balls at Price. It would help his save percentage I think, um maybe not.

    • valoisjoeybfeld69 - Apr 23, 2013 at 4:20 PM

Oh! Brutal! But he is paid to stop pucks, and to put it lightly he hasn’t been doing that. And as far as I’m concerned Gorges is a terrible D. So, bad defense and a goalie who can’t stop a beach ball. Bring on the playoffs. Can you just imagine the out cry in Montreal if the habs get knocked in the first round vs the Leafs! Tabarnouhe! Ca va frapper fort aux lignes ouvertes.:-)

      • valoisvipers - Apr 24, 2013 at 4:46 PM

The folks here are going to be crying in their poutine when the Habs are one and done.

His head is messed up right now, which means the Habs are toast in the first or second round.
