Video: This year’s biggest winners and losers

Apr 22, 2013, 11:28 PM EDT

Sure, there’s a week left in the 2013 season and there are still some playoff spots to fight over (probably in a dramatic fashion), but it’s probably safe to say that some teams “won” more than others. You might say that looking at the standings could do the job, yet that doesn’t always consider money spent or how a team exceeds/falls short of expectations.

With all that in mind, Mike Milbury and Jeremy Roenick break down their choices for winners and losers from this condensed season:

Wow I thought for sure Milbury or JR would choose the Flyers as the biggest losers. I think most ppl predicted Detroit would be a bubble team so they’re not too surprising to me. Although they still could sneak in but personally I’m rooting for the Blue Jackets.

Ducks should get a mention as being a winner this season as well. Boudreau has done wonders for that team after a disappointing last season.

I don’t think many people thought they would clinch the Pacific at the start of this season.

I have an obvious bias but I think the Isles should definitely get a mention on here as one of the surprises. Nearly every analyst picked them as a team finishing in the bottom of the Eastern Conference- now they’re a point away from locking up a playoff birth and have a chance to finish as high as the 5th seed

i agree 100%. the islanders are not only doing well. but they are doing well without a roster packed with stars. they are playing a team sport as well as a team can in my opinion.

How Milbury should have answered the question, “can a GM really make that big of an impact?”

MM: Sure they can- just look at the devastating impact I had on the Islanders when I was a GM. They’re just finally recovering now!
