Playoff picture: Jackets have 46% chance of making it

Apr 22, 2013, 11:07 AM EDT

The Columbus Blue Jackets earned a huge 4-3 victory last night in San Jose. As you can see below (courtesy Sports Club Stats), the win greatly helped the plucky Jackets in their unlikely quest for a playoff spot.

source:

Columbus has gone 4-1-0 in the first five games of a tough six-game road trip that ends Thursday in Dallas.

The biggest dropper yesterday was Minnesota, which looked like a lock to make the postseason a short time ago. The Wild have just three wins in their last 11 games.

Detroit earned a point Saturday in Vancouver, but the Red Wings (you may have heard they haven’t missed the playoffs in quite some time) may end up regretting the fact they outshot the Canucks, 34-14, and lost 2-1 in the shootout.

Remaining schedules…

Minnesota: Los Angeles, Edmonton, @ Colorado

Columbus: @ Dallas, Nashville

Detroit: Phoenix, Los Angeles, Nashville, @ Dallas

Dallas: @ San Jose, Columbus, Detroit

Phoenix: @ Detroit, San Jose, Colorado, @ Anaheim

Unfortunate to think they could tie in points with Detroit, have more wins, win the season series 4-1 and yet Detroit wins the 1st tiebreaker, ROW’s. Looks like they need to tweek this rule.

I think though if Columbus wins their last two games they should be in; I don’t see Detroit taking seven out of eight points in their last four games. Jackets have a few days to rest as well so that should help, do you know if there is a timetable for the return of Anisimov???

If the NHL is happy with the shootout format, then wins are wins. I don’t like shootouts, but I like even less that there is some technicality that decides playoff berths.

Who would have thought in the beginning of the season that Columbus-Dallas could be a must watch game? A ton on the line for both those teams, especially if Dallas beats San Jose. This is one of those situations where I wish they had flex scheduling with NBCSN. Pens-Devils is being shown on Thursday, and even as a Pens fan I think I’m gonna watch the Dallas-Columbus game once it starts at 8:30. Pens are going to be playing their B team and NJ has nothing to play for. Pretty pointless game.

    So you’re telling me there’s a CHANCE?!?!

If the Blue Jackets make it as the 8th seed they will give the Blackhawks a lot of trouble. Chicago has the clear talent advantage but I’ve watched a couple games between these teams and Columbus gives them fits. I’m pretty sure all 4 meetings were one goal games. I don’t think the Hawks lose the series but it might go 6 or 7.

Not only could the Jackets make the playoffs, but that #7 seed(vs. ANA first round. a team we’ve taken 2 out of 3 from this year) is right there as well especially with the way the Wild are playing. Can’t believe I’m actually gonna be routing for the Kings to win the next 2 days. Trying not to get to excited cause the Jackets have kicked me in the cajones enough throughout the years, but man are they getting me pumped
