Kings’ Sutter on Toews: ‘Other than what I think of our guy, he’s the best captain in hockey’

Apr 19, 2013, 3:48 PM EDT

Jonathan Toews

Considering his own captain, Dustin Brown, led the Kings to their first-ever Stanley Cup last season, Darryl Sutter’s praise of Jonathan Toews is pretty remarkable.

“Other than what I think of our guy, he’s the best captain in hockey,” LA’s head coach told the Chicago Daily Herald. “Think about it, he’s already raised the Stanley Cup, so he’s got it.

“Everything he does presents himself as the ultimate player.”

Toews, 24, is getting a lot of buzz right now thanks to TSN’s recent coaches poll, which suggested he was the “overwhelming choice for Hart Trophy MVP consideration in the Western Conference.”

The Chicago captain is having another solid year, pacing the top team in the NHL (33-5-4) to what could be their first Presidents Trophy since 1990-91.

Toews has six points in his last four games and has 44 points in 42 games. More impressive, and perhaps a better indication of just how good Chicago has been, is Toews’ plus-minus rating. His plus-27 rating puts him third amongst all NHL players this season.

Dubbed “Captain Serious” due to his maturity level, Toews has earned equal measures of respect both on and off the ice.

It’s something Sutter alluded to in anointing him the best captain in the game.

“Jonathan impacts their locker room, maybe more so than his on-ice performance,” he explained. “Just what he brings them.

“He is the consummate player.”

Sutter thinks Dustin Brown, the diving dirt bag is better? Toews>Brown any day

    • chicagobtech - Apr 19, 2013 at 4:10 PM

Brown is Sutter’s player. I would be shocked if he said his captain wasn’t the best.

Briown better than toews and Crosby? Ummm no.

  3. comeonnowguys - Apr 19, 2013 at 4:12 PM

Sutter has to say that about his captain. Pretty much any coach does.

Really? Better than Thornton and Crosby?

    • sjawesome - Apr 19, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Thornton isn’t that great of a captain. He’s a really good player and has leadership ability but he’s definitely not the best captain

Can you point me to the place where they call Toews “No Show Johnny?” If so, then we’ll talk.

Hey, I’m a sharks fan, but that comment is delusional

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 19, 2013 at 5:27 PM

Yeah,, better than Crosby you approval seeker ! Shake it down shake it down now shake it down shack it down now !

  5. sjsharks66 - Apr 19, 2013 at 4:47 PM

So what makes a good captain if its not leadership and skill??

    • govtminion - Apr 19, 2013 at 5:03 PM

If you live in Washington, it’s the hope that adding a ‘C’ to the chest of your most popular player will make people want to go out and buy a new jersey.

Pretty hard to find fault with Sutter’s assessment of Toews though I’m not sure how he comes by information regarding behaviour in the Hawks locker room…?

Jonathan’s a salt of the earth prairie boy, a model leader in the mould of quiet determined leaders like Steve Yzerman, and a brilliant player!

Hawks should have kept John Scott in the stable…now, there’s no one left to ride shotgun as Jonathan gets ragged and pounded in the playoffs?

    What were they thinking…

  7. hammerhead5573 - Apr 19, 2013 at 6:11 PM

Now that’s priceless, someone saying the Hawks should have kept John Scott. Matt Walker yes, John Scott no. John Scott will throw down with anyone but when he wasn’t fighting he was useless

  8. pone27 - Apr 19, 2013 at 6:22 PM

    Toews = Man
    Sid = Kid

Lol, Pens fans will thumb down their own nickname they gave their own player.

  9. thehighcountrybear - Apr 19, 2013 at 7:46 PM

You don’t have John Scott for any other reason than to serve as a deterrent…let him ride the pine, but the liberties taken with Toews by the Blues would not have happened if Scott was on the bench.

Short of Hossa, Kane or Toews actually finding the cojones to get down and dirty, Hawks have no answer for the playoff thuggery about to come.

We’ll talk what is or isn’t priceless when the carnage begins…

I really hate to agree with countrybear, but I do, for the most part. Hopefully either Bollig Carcillo or Mayers will fulfill that role. Though last year both Bollig and Mayers had the opportunity to go after Torres during game 3 last year but didn’t. Mayers didn’t play the rest of the series, he was a healthy scratch. I have a feeling his lack of action had something to do with that.

Oh HighCountry…you just can’t help yourself can you, like a moth to a flame. “They won’t win because of blah, blah, blah.” Why don’t you just agree with the article and admit that Toews is a great player/captain and you’d love to have him on your team. No need for the playoff $h!t talk…

“Or walk with Kings, nor lose the common touch” …

I’m completely convinced that had Rudyard Kipling been given the chance, then no doubt he’d have been an “avid & raging” fan of the LA Kings like me! The same goes for Elvis Presley, Lord Nelson, Mahatma Ghandi, Sir Isaac Newton, Abe Lincoln and other men of quality. The bottom line friends is that Daryl Sutter is simply calling a “spade a spade” here. Yes, Jonathan Toews is an “excellent” captain and therefore he could quite easily be considered the “best” of the best. I personally admire his on-ice talent and demeanor and I feel that he’s a captain which any fan “ought” to be very proud of. However, the other thing that hasn’t been mentioned here, is the fact that this is Sutter’s “classic” MO for prodding his people to perform. We’ve only to reflect back to yesterday, where Sutter was essentially calling out Dustin Penner to perform better. We also saw this with Quick earlier in the year and there have been others. Playing mind games with people is not my thing, especially with those closest to you. But that’s Sutter’s way and he’s our coach … so let’s just “fall in” friends and ready ourselves to take the high ground again!

Executive Summary: Dustin Brown is “our” captain and so there’s no need to look further ! :)
