Will the Isles ‘create a connection’ to Brooklyn with black-and-white uniforms?

Could the Islanders be going black-and-white after they move to Brooklyn?

But before anyone freaks out, probably just occasionally.

“The colors black and white are the new badge of honor in Brooklyn,” said Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark, per Sports Business Journal. “The question is, can we weave that into their color scheme, and create a connection to the fans here in Brooklyn?”

For longtime Isles fans that have already been scarred by this and this, owner Charles Wang told SBJ he doesn’t expect the club’s main color scheme to change.

Our best guess: the Isles will introduce a new third jersey to match their NBA arena-mates at the Barclays Center.

I thought their colors were already an homage to New York. Orange and Blue are also the colors of the Knicks, Mets, and New York City’s flag.

But if they want to join in on the black and white marketing gimmick that Brooklyn is starting, no one can stop them.

If they wanted to make a third jersey black and silver, I wouldn’t freak out. Can’t be worse than the 3rd jerseys this year. Certainly can’t be worse than the Fisherman.

Oddly, I recently met an Islanders fan who became a fan partially because of how much he enjoyed the Fisherman’s alt jersey. I was floored.

As a non Islanders fan…I like the new colors. That being said I always thought the traditional jersey was kind of blah.

Anything would be better than the black/orange/grey mess they have now.

Ok the answer is simple take the current away (white/blue/orange) and make that the primary home like it used to be. Then make the current home (blue/orange/white) make that the primary away. Then create a new third jersey incorporation Brooklyn to be worn on Sunday games only

Don’t teams have to wear colors at home and whites away? I don’t think they get a choice unless they request it and the other team agrees to wear their aways at home. I believe it was San Jose who did it the other day whenever they were playing Dallas. They wore their home jerseys in Dallas after Dallas agreed. I don’t remember what the reason was but I remember the announcers commenting on it. It might not have been them, but I know it was one of the NBC or NBCSN games the other day that I watched. The Isles can probably wear their “away” jerseys at home, but they’d also have to wear their away jerseys when they were away so they’d be wearing the same jersey all the time. If they don’t then your sort of disrespecting the other team because they should be the one in their team colors when they’re at home. Plus if they’re playing a team like the Oilers that have similar colors then everyone would look the same on the ice and it would probably be more confusing for the players, refs, fans, and announcers when everyone is in the same color. Now I’m rambling, but the point I am trying to make is that I don’t think teams have a choice and even if they do I think it’s sort of an unwritten rule that you wear white when your away.

Unless you are the Oakland Raiders, skip the black.

I don’t see why these aren’t on the menu:

If they took that ugly grey out of their current black jersey and switched it for white it would probably look considerably better.

NHL, please bring back the traditional white jerseys for home games and dark for away games!!!

I thought they were determining if this was an option?

if all else fails, if it becomes too much of a drag to commute to bk via the train or sit on the BQE in traffic, the hipsters will show up for a few years and then when they think they are too cool for school, will stop coming.

@chanceoffleury1 I understand what you’re saying but I think every team should wear whites at home like it used to be get the old NHL back is what I’m saying

    • chanceoffleury1 - Apr 18, 2013 at 11:05 PM

Well that’s a different story. I think teams should wear white at home too. Gives the fans a little more variety besides the constant team color and white they see at every home game. I was just saying the league has to unanimously agree on it one way or the other. The Isles can’t just do their own thing.
