Playoff picture: Rangers, Isles, and Jets fighting for final two spots

Apr 17, 2013, 11:24 AM EDT

The New York Rangers made the playoff race a lot more interesting with last night’s 4-2 loss in Philadelphia. Add Winnipeg’s shootout win over Tampa Bay and the Islanders’ 5-2 destruction of Florida, and here’s how the standings look in the Eastern Conference:

The Isles have five games remaining, all of them on the road — @ Toronto, @ Winnipeg, @ Carolina, @ Philadelphia, @ Buffalo.

The Rangers have a slightly easier slate — Florida, @ Buffalo, New Jersey, @ Florida, @ Carolina, New Jersey.

And here’s what the Jets are facing — Carolina, Islanders, @ Buffalo, @ Washington, Montreal.

Winnipeg could also still catch Washington for the Southeast Division title, though that seems unlikely the way the Caps have been playing.

Saturday’s game at the MTS Centre between the Jets and Isles looms large.

Also interesting to watch will be how all those non-playoff teams perform in a potential spoiler role. For example, we imagine the Devils wouldn’t mind being responsible for the Rangers missing the postseason.

A win against Toronto on Thursday and the next headline could be, “Rangers and Jets fight for the last spot in the East, Isles fight for 6th”

  2. domdogsbk85 - Apr 17, 2013 at 11:55 AM

these next two games for the rangers, thurs vs florida and friday at buffalo are must wins. They are all must wins, but i see that buffalo game as the game in hand. They NEED 4 points.I see myself suddenly becoming a huge islander fan on saturday. Islanders are playing well right now, i think winnipeg and rangers fight for 8th. Last game of the year, rangers need a win vs the devils to get in(i see it coming). So ranger fans you know how this goes, lets get our alka seltzer ready and hope for the best .Lets go rangers

  3. withseidelinn - Apr 17, 2013 at 11:55 AM

I think the Leafs will remain in 5th, while the Isles clinch 6th, the Sens stay in 7th and the Jets clinch 8th. And it will all probably be decided on the last day of the season.

Sather should get the boot for not giving Torts the hook. The players and the coach and the system don’t work together. Granted this is probably more emotional than rational. I’m still so frustrated from last night. Maybe Katie Strang can include in the preview if the Rangers are going to put the time in and show up for the game or not. It’d be helpful to the fans who put the time aside to watch.

Sather should have been fired for a lot of thing, many of them far bigger then not getting rid of Torts. If he hasn’t been fired by now, he has the job for life.

      • tfaltin - Apr 17, 2013 at 1:12 PM

While the list of veteran expenses that did not add up is lengthy (Nedved, Jagr, Fleury, Bure, Redden to rattle of a few) I have really respected the dedication Sather has shown in recent years to develop the kids (Stepan, Girardi, Callahan, Dubinsky, Del Zotto, Kreider, Chereponov (may he rest in peace)) and supplement the roster with bigger pieces as necessary. I’d say Gaborik was a good signing, Richards though I fear is going in the wrong direction. Basically the point I’m trying to make is I have more faith in Sather at this point to make the right calls than Torts to win with the team on the ice.

Love how you used the boot and the hook in the same sentence!

      • tfaltin - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Haha thank you, I was a bit proud of myself for that.

The Rangers have been an enigma this year. One game they look unbeatable, and then the next they look weak and disorganized. Im not sure I’ve ever seen anything like it.

If they could wake up for these last six games, they should be fine. They have a game in hand on the Islanders and the Jets, and play bottom feeding teams. With how up and down they have been though, its anyones guess how this plays out.

Islander fans need to wait to spike the football, and start talking about climbing into 6th as well. Losing just a couple games, especially the one against the Jets, could still cost them their playoff spot.

    • bcisleman - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:33 PM

Only they haven’t been losing. Their only losses in the last 10 were against teams they outplayed whose goalies stood on their heads…and they still got points for both. If they continue playing as they have, there is no reason why they should lose ANY games the rest of the season….unless Nabby is injured.

    • islesjb - Apr 17, 2013 at 1:17 PM

I don’t think any Islander fan is spiking the football just yet- a devastating late season collapse is still a possibility in the back of my mind that I just care not to think about.

At the same time, based on how they’ve been playing, coveting the 6th spot is not off-base in the slightest. A win on Thursday coupled with an Ottawa loss, and we can start thinking about 5th (which would still be a long-shot).

Basically, we all know the Islanders haven’t made the playoffs yet but they are playing the best they’ve played in years and they have a soft schedule, albeit on the road, to close out the season.

      It looks promising.

My god an Islanders – Capitals series would be fun. Come to think of it, a final four of Pittsburgh, Washington, the Islanders and Toronto would be awesome. Possible too, Islanders get the 7 and beat the Habs, Pitt takes out the 8, Washington beats the Sens in the 6, and Toronto and Phil Kessel exact late revenge on the Bruins. That’d be some high octane must see hockey.

More likely the Senators shut down the Caps and will their way to four 2-1 wins, the Bruins eliminate all flow from the Leafs and win four 2-1 games, the Habs limit the Islanders skill and win four 3-2 games, and the Penguins…well, they beat the Rangers 8-1 four times.

  6. multiplemiggs - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:35 PM

HAHA Katie Strang…she doesnt even know the rules to how the standings work…what a dummy…Rangers are a joke organization. Lets go Islanders…real fans, real hockey.

    • anthonykornheiser - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:47 PM

I’M sorry, did you just say islanders and real fans in the same sentence? just look at the comment below how the NYR raised their stick to rangers fans in your own house.
i respect bcisleman, knowledgable guy, posts a lot, but you miggs sound like a moron.

rangers are a joke organization, lets go islanders……and you’re calling someone else a dummy? The joke organization is one of the largest markets.

    • tfaltin - Apr 17, 2013 at 1:01 PM

Sorry for not being direct. Next time I’m being facetious I will start the sentence with “I am being facetious.” But now that your brought it up, she did start as an Islanders beat writer so she probably didn’t have to concern herself with the standings very often.

Sorry for the insult, real Islander fans. I am very impressed with your team, and would really enjoy a playoff run featuring your fun brand of hockey.

  7. bcisleman - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:36 PM

Living in BC, I am unable to attend games at NVMC. I am told by Islander tweeps who were at the NVMC Saturday that the NYR raised their sticks to their fans in our building. If they did, it would be only justice if the Jets edged them out for the last playoff spot and they got to watch the Isles advance in the playoffs on their country club’s TV.

  8. ibieiniid - Apr 17, 2013 at 12:53 PM

    lol saw this on facebook:

“Flyers make playoffs IF they win out,& contenders go as follows… NYR:2-5 WPG:2-3 BUF:4-1 NJD:5-1 Miracle needed!”

    commence flaming whoever typed that.

  9. rabidbillsfan - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Love the fact you left out the Sabres. They are hotter then the Rangers and Jets, and they play all three teams you have listed. Banking on the fact that the Rangers stumble against the Panthers, Fridays game could put the Sabres in the Playoffs. Boston may be looking to come out strong, and they should, but for a team that relies alot on imposing their will, the emotions may be to high and the Sabres have had thier number. It’s a 3 team race for 8th, even if the Sabres are 4 points back. It’s not probable, but it’s possible, and even more so then some media pundits may think.

    • islesjb - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:23 PM

The Panthers beating the Rangers is a big “if”

    • tfaltin - Apr 17, 2013 at 2:26 PM

I feel bad for the Sabres tonight. The Boston Garden is going to be rocking, and that emotional wave is going to way too much for Buffalo to handle. That said, I think the game will be must-see TV, purely for Boston’s response, especially now that the suspect has been cuffed. This is when sports can help turn the page on a negative societal event.

  10. multiplemiggs - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:09 PM

anthonykornheiser……yes I exactly did just that.. and theres absolutely NOTHING you can do about it. Number one, look at your name, you are a puny nobody. The guy who commented about the classless rag fans raising their sticks to us in our own building said thats what he “heard” and asked if it was true. You have 7 division titles in 86 years with 6 teams in the league. Sounds like a very accomplished organization! So yea, I say it again….Islanders, real fans (not wall street suits) and real hockey. What are you gonna do about it? Nothing. Have fun watching your overpaid bums who cant score goals go golfing next week 😉

    • domdogsbk85 - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:21 PM

you mean real fans that pack the nassau coliseum only when the team is winning???come on man isles are having a great year enjoy it, but we all know who the real ny team is and who the real loyal ny fans are. lets go rangers miggs

  11. jdrew506 - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:17 PM

I am a big Islander fan and watching what the team has been doing lately is great. Don’t think all islander fans are alike though, it’s great watching the possible collapse of the Rangers but by no means do most of us think they are a joke organization or have joke fans. Any one who claims that either does not watch hockey or just being a troll.

    • islesjb - Apr 17, 2013 at 7:20 PM

I agree- Miggs you just sound like a super doucher

  12. source7769 - Apr 17, 2013 at 6:55 PM

am i missing something or shouldnt Ottawa be in this topic also they are 1 pt ahead of the Islanders not exactly cemented into the playoffs

  13. multiplemiggs - Apr 17, 2013 at 11:42 PM
