Habs’ White suspended five games for ‘reckless’ Huskins headshot

Apr 17, 2013, 3:31 PM EDT

The National Hockey League has suspended Montreal forward Ryan White five games for a blow to the head of Philadelphia’s Kent Huskins.

“As White approaches Huskins, his timing and his route are off,” explained NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan. “Instead of making a legal, full bodycheck, he recklessly picks Huskins’ head with his shoulder, making it the principal point of contact.”

Here’s the video ruling:

White, 25, was tossed from the contest and offered an in-person disciplinary hearing for the hit. The Flyers later reported that Huskins suffered a concussion on the play.

The suspension matches the longest of this season, tied with the five games Buffalo’s Patrick Kaleta received for boarding Rangers forward Brad Richards on Mar. 4.

White will miss Montreal’s games against Pittsburgh (Apr. 17), Tampa Bay (Apr. 18), Washington (Apr. 20), New Jersey (Apr.23) and Winnipeg (Apr. 25), eligible to return for the regular-season finale against Toronto on Apr. 27.

He will also forfeit $18,581.10 in salary to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

i guess they are sending a message to players for the playoffs.

  2. hockeywithdrawal - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:35 PM

As a Pens fan, I say thank you, Mr. Shanahan.

  3. solador78 - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:43 PM

Just another hypocritical ruling from the NHL.

Here’s Luke Schenn giving out a concussion:

Here’s Krejci throwing the exact same hit as White:

    • nhbsfan - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:48 PM

You think that Krejci check is the “exact same” as the White hit…wow. Are those Montreal specific glasses only available in Canada or can we all get some down here in the states? Do they make them for every team?

      • solador78 - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:51 PM

You’re right. The Krejci hit was worse since Gallagher was blindsided with that hit to his head..

      • supercoop8 - Apr 17, 2013 at 5:41 PM

1:03 of the Kejci video- skate on the ice, doesn’t explode up in to the hit, has body squared to Gallaghers, and finishes by pushing him in the chest; clean hit.
The suspension to White was too extreme so cut Solador some slack I would be annoyed as well.

      • sabatimus - Apr 17, 2013 at 5:51 PM

Like the Habs are going to miss White anyway.

    • sunderlanding - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:09 PM

For the last time people you are allowed to hit the head. It just has to be a full body check as well, so long as the head isn’t the only thing you hit you’re ok. Typical Montreal behaviour. Everyone in the league including the announcers thinks these hits are ok, so I guess you’re trying to tell us there is a conspiracy against Montreal.

      • solador78 - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:20 PM

Since when is taking runs at defenseless players ‘ok’ ? Call charging, boarding, hitting from behind, whatever.

Schenn’s hit was from behind in the danger zone along the boards.
Krejci’s blindside run deliberately targeted the head.
Chara’s fists were the principal point of contact with Pacioretty’s face

Here’s another deliberate hit to the hit without a suspension:

      • nhbsfan - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:27 PM

“Krejci’s blindside run deliberately targeted the head.”

-says only solador78 and no one else.

If you want to compare White’s hit I’d say take a look at the Matt Cooke on Savard hit…

I think someone in Montreal needs to start an investigation into the unfair persecution of Les Habitants players!

      • solador78 - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:31 PM

The Cooke hit on Savard looks more like the Ference hit on Halpern that stole game 7 in 2011.

Does anyone know if the Mounties have opened a criminal investigation yet?…

    Nothing.

    • williplett - Apr 17, 2013 at 3:48 PM

I REALLY wish there was an edit feature at this time. I messed up. Sorry.

  5. 2qswing - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Shanahan went on to say that two-handed full swing slashes to the legs and ankles from behind designed to shatter bones by players who then hide behind officials ARE permitted.

    • nhbsfan - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:04 PM

So true. I’m not sure how they totally missed that blatant play from Hall.

  6. 28giroux28 - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:17 PM

I’m not sure I agree that Huskins didn’t “significantly alter the path of his head or body”. You can clearly see his back leg whip around as he tries to quickly slide out of the way. Certainly a reckless hit by White, but Huskins can’t be afraid to get hit if he’s a D-man breaking the puck out of the zone.

    • solador78 - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:22 PM

Because Shanahan is a liar. He bends his perception of the events around the rules that he selectively enforces.

      • 28giroux28 - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:26 PM

After the Webber ruling, I stopped actually listening to that talking head. If Giroux had been the one hit, it might be 10 games. Unless of course it was in the playoffs, then it would have been a fine.

      • solador78 - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:36 PM

There’ s no denying that White deserves a suspension. I’d have even given him more that 5 games. The NHL doesn’t need players “trying to blow-up” the other team. But if you look around the league, suspensions have more to do with the team you play for than anything else. The Bruins weren’t happy when Cooke wasn’t suspended so they took over the league office and haven’t looked back.

      • nhbsfan - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Yeah, the whole NHL front office is run by the Bruins! Poor Montreal will never get a fair shake! It’s a TRAVESTY I TELL YOU!!

        [Insert gigantic eye roll here]

    • 28giroux28 - Apr 17, 2013 at 5:02 PM

That’s actually the most frustrating part. Shanny doesn’t appear to have any particular method to his madness. No particular team or player gets any favoritism that I can see. He just throws suspensions and fines around at random, and flat out makes up his analysis sometimes.

  7. nosefacekillah - Apr 17, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Montreal is by FAR the leagues favorite. They get away with more dirt than any other team. Mario’s Penguins are close but Montreal is a clear winner. Every head snap is called a high stick, every superman flop is a trip. Subban winks to the refs more often than he shots the at net.

The only thing shocking here is a Canadien was actually suspended. Are the wheels falling off the Cinderella season? Price has shown his true colors. The defense is being exploited. The youth are collapsing under the pressure now that the playoffs near.

Another round 1 exit by the blue, blanc et rouge.

  8. holeecowman - Apr 17, 2013 at 5:07 PM

finally justice for the flyers, but also keep in mind that huskins did play for shannys beloved red wings at one point which may have contributed to the suspension. i totaly agree with this 100%

  9. sportsfreak13 - Apr 17, 2013 at 5:09 PM

I cant stand fans who bring up other players hits and try to draw comparisons. Accept the fact that your teams player laid a dirty hit and move on. Quit crying about how “unfair” and “inconsistent” the league is when handing out suspensions and just accept that white messed up and laid a dirty hit. Why is there so much whining for a guy who was going to be scratched anyways. Imagine if pacioretty did this, they might of called the authority’s to see if shanahan could be charged criminally.

    • bigoldorcafromvan - Apr 17, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Since the suspensions has been announced I hope Huskins pulls a Hossa and is back good to go for the next game. Just Sayin

  10. tcclark - Apr 17, 2013 at 6:20 PM

This league is turning into the NFL. Let the players police themselves like they’ve been doing forever. Get rid of the instigator penalty, get rid of the third man in penalty, get rid of the fighting with a visor penalty, let these players police themselves. Let White get his ass kicked for this and he’s much less likely to do it next time.

This coming from a Flyers Fan. 5 games is ridiculous

Good for the dirty little no talent douche.
