Video: The first trailer for NHL 14

Apr 16, 2013, 7:55 PM EDT

EA Sports’ NHL video game series serves hockey fans as many sports titles do: they allow you to feel like a player, coach or GM (with significantly lower chances of getting fired or suffering a concussion).

With new consoles seemingly on their way, some might consider NHL 14 to be the last hockey title of “this generation.” The software giant provided some early details this week, including this trailer:

(Warning: enjoyment may vary depending upon your music taste.)

As you may notice, the game is slated to come out on Sept. 10, 2013.

EA Sports’ first look provides some interesting details, including the fact that the game’s fighting engine will be based on the popular “Fight Night” boxing series. To many, brawling in hockey games just hasn’t been the same since the days of “Blades of Steel,” so this could be a welcome change for fake pugilists.

Now, if they’d just add some icon passing, some of us would finally be content …

I am pretty sure this isn’t the first time this was said on this site, but how can anyone not like dropkick?

Looks like the biggest difference is they added more jerseys to the fans haha

Looks freakin smurf…but i can never execute anything like what they show on trailers. I just go one timers and jamming the crease until something good happens

Dropkick Murphys and hockey should go hand in hand. I’m excited for the game. The two things I would change are the time it takes to pivot, and first step acceleration, and from what I hear both are being addressed.

Worst sports game ever…they never add anything new…the moves are next to impossible to execute…it takes hockey and turns it into a slow, boring, aweful experience. Every goal enters the net no higher than the ankle and no faster than 4mph (if it actually goes in) and the arenas are all almost the same minus the banners hanging and it is pure laziness on behalf of EA who are CANADIAN which is even more of a shocker.

You must be one of those people who give up on a game when it doesn’t immediately come easy to you. NHL 13 was a huge upgrade over ’12, IMO. The skating, hits, and goaltending was way more authentic. And I don’t know what you’re talking about with ankle high goals, shooting a quick snapshot top shelf is not that difficult. The one complaint I have is that I have never once had a fight in NHL 13, but it looks like they’re changing that. I can’t wait for this years version.

i too find doing moves pretty plain and simple. Game is awesome. If I could have anything though….

Fight controls like fight night?! Thats awesome! I love the NHL series. The keep improving every year.

Icon passing would be huge the skating this year is awesome. How about a little more puck control and easing up on the poke checks and focus on actual checking. I hope they don’t screw this up

I really wish EA would ditch half of the leagues featured in this game because no one really uses them. Id much rather see all time teams instead or every single team to win the Stanley Cup. Also Id like to have the option of wearing every jersey that an NHL team has worn in their history. Id love to play with the 93-01 Penguin jerseys or the Pens blue jerseys of 73-80.

I can’t wait to watch the a.I. go into 5minute neutral zone passing drills again. Might have to pass this year, it’s been a $70 dvd up to this point, and it won’t change this year.
