Video: PHT Extra – What’s next for the Oilers?

Apr 16, 2013, 7:25 AM EDT

Former Oilers GM Steve Tambellini collected an impressive core of young skilled forwards for Edmonton, but he was unable to build a winning team around them. The Oilers will miss the playoffs for the seventh straight season and need to bolster both their defense and bottom-six forwards before they will be a serious contender.

With that in mind, what will Craig “man of action” MacTavish do this summer?

This edition of PHT Extra was filmed yesterday and then postponed until today.

More of the same until the acquire some size, grit, plenty of depth, probably 3-4 NHL defensemen and a goalie who can win them games on his own. But at least the cupboard is full on undersized forwards…

It seems Kevin Lowe has over-taxed equity earned as a player while expecting success and an adoring public to follow…?

While I see MacTavish prolonging Lowe’s career, it will be because of MacTavish’s charisma and ability to relate to young players rather than Lowe, himself the vestigial remains of a long dead Oilers dynasty and moribund good ‘ol boys club [ the curse of Glen Sather ]?

How much will a megalomaniac like Katz tolerate…Oilers need success at some level to try and sell the arena dream in a province dependent on oil revenue, itself seemingly south bound in recent months? Katz needs material to feed his spin machine, and Lowe has not delivered; it all looked good on paper but on the ice, the results speak for themselves. The lingering question: what kills player motivation in the Oilers system?

I see a limited future in Edmonton for Lowe if Oilers follow current disasters with more disaster. Maybe it’s time to bring in their old buddy Brian Burke…

    Brian knows!
