Video: Ovechkin sticks up for Backstrom after hit

Apr 16, 2013, 8:43 PM EDT

It’s no secret that Alex Ovechkin is on fire right now. He showed that he’s the Washington Capitals captain for reasons that extend beyond his slick scoring touch on Tuesday, as he stood up for linemate Nicklas Backstrom after Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jay McClement delivered this hit:

Ovechkin received a two-minute minor for charging on that play while Jason Chimera and McClement were given the five-minute fighting majors.

That scuffle must have given the Caps an even bigger boost against the Buds; they fattened their 1-0 lead to 4-0 (as of this writing) since then.

The fact that this is a story says worlds more about Ovi then him sticking up for a teammate…..

    • stakex - Apr 16, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Not at all. Seeing guys like Ovechkin jump someone like this is very very rare. If Crosby did the same thing, it would also be a story… and has been in the past.

McClement should have easily got a penalty. Have to respect Ovies decision though to stick up for his teammates. You can tell he really wants to get into the playoffs.

He’s having fun again. This could be really bad for other teams.

Giroux, watch that video please. that’s how captaining is done.

did you guys see that deke OV made up the middle (sorry if it’s in the vid, I saw the highlight on TV so i didn’t watch the vid above)??? nasty. don’t sleep on the Caps with OV playing like this. I know it’s (less than) a 1 in 64 chance… but I want to see a Caps/Ducks final.

The whole Boudreau past and present teams would certainly put an interesting spin on it. I’m sure the media would eat it up.

Captain and Camaraderie, Get it done.

Guys like Ovi? Anytime Crosby is on the ice he is in the middle of most scrums. Ovi is a part timer these days. He was invisible for the first half of the season. If he is so great he would’ve carried that team through the first half. More like “Late 8”. Great talent, mentally weak.
I’ve never seen this supposed article you claim exists. Im sure it does given the fact they would report an oversized Crosby turd if they got word of it. I think its pretty obvious something other then rarity drives that media gluttony.

Clearly csiblow, you need to stop watching the Mike “Milkyway” Milbury portion of the NHL highlight show. Your missing some real good Hockey!

    • babykaby - Apr 17, 2013 at 5:51 AM

Angry much? You are right tho, Crosby is in the middle of most scrums, he usually starts them, till it gets rough then he backs out and leaves his teammates to take the punches. If you think you can actually make anyone believe that Crosby is tougher than Ovechkin, you have a heck of a long row to hoe. The only people on the planet buying that Crosby is tough are Pens fans and even they don’t really believe it.

BAHAHAHAHA. it’s funny how amazingly wrong you are.

much better of late … keep it up Tovarisch !

  8. csilojohnson - Apr 17, 2013 at 6:50 AM

Read much people? Was responding to stakex. Never once claimed any toughness.on anyones part. Not mad either. Just think a bum.

    • babykaby - Apr 17, 2013 at 8:36 AM

The implication was there, Bozo. If you think Ovechkin is a bum then you really have no idea what hockey is all about or the contributions he has made to the sport. Maybe you should just go watch some curling, it’s a bit slower so you should have time to understand how it works. Oh and by the way, Crosby is a gifted, skilled player, but he is not a God, which means he is not flawless. To insult Ovechkin by bringing up Crosby is about as original as sliced bread. To call someone as gifted as Ovechkin a bum shows a total lack of intelligence and common sense on your part. Maybe you aren’t mad, maybe you’re just an Ovechkin wanna-be.

      • fbothharbaughs - Apr 17, 2013 at 10:59 AM

Is an Ovechkin wanna-be someone who needs a compass to find his own end? Ovechkin’s a gifted goal-scorer, but can’t come close to Sid to being a total player…

It was good to see Ovi be the first player to support Backstrom after the clear boarding hit. He is doing what a Captain is suppose to do, lead by example. Another great team win last night. Go Caps!
