PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look around the world of hockey to see what’s happening and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL world and beyond.

The Edmonton Oilers will fail to make the playoffs for the seventh straight season. Is it time to fire Oilers GM Steve Tambellini or does he deserve more time to lead the rebuilding squad through its next phase? (Edmonton Journal)

Colorado Avalanche prospect Joey Hishon has suffered a head injury. He was playing in his ninth game since returning from a concussion that had sidelined him for almost two years. The Avalanche took the 21-year-old with the 17th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. (Denver Post)

Washington has gone 21-9-1 in its last 30 games after starting the season 2-8-1. As Capitals coach Adam Oates put it, “We’ve come a long way.” (Washington Times)

The Calgary Flames have signed Ben Hanowski. The 22-year-old prospect has 17 goals and 31 points in 37 games with St. Cloud State. If that name sounds vaguely familiar, it might be because he was one of the players involved in the Jarome Iginla trade. (Flames.nhl.com)

J.S. Giguere drew some harsh criticism for ripping his teammates a week ago. He later apologized for his remarks. (Denver Post)

It remains to be seen if the Dallas Stars will make the playoffs, but their AHL affiliate in Texas has earned its first division title in franchise history. (AHL.com)

Panthers coach Kevin Dineen admitted that he is sometimes at odds with forward Scottie Upshall, but Dineen was pleased with Upshall’s performance on Saturday. (South Florida Sun-Sentinel)

Yes! Give a decent GM 3 straight years with the first overall pick and you’d have a team that’s knocking at the door instead the Oilers look like a team that’s marginally better but nowhere near ready to become a contender.

Even Montreal and Toronto have been able to bounce back. What is “the city of champions” excuse?
