Video: Panthers’ Gudbranson receives match penalty

Apr 12, 2013, 12:36 AM EDT

Florida Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson received a match penalty for a high hit on Winnipeg Jets forward Bryan Little on Thursday night.

The incident occurred with one minute remaining in the second period of the Jets’ 7-2 win over the Panthers.

Little was bleeding from the hit. Could this incident lead to further supplementary discipline for Gudbranson?

Earlier in the day, the NHL suspended New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov four games for an elbow to the head of Bruins forward Brad Marchand.

That wasnt even dirty though, he just happens to be alot taller than Little so it looks like a headshot/elbow to the head

Being big is no excuse. This clown can’t continue to justify knocking dudes out.

2 questionable hits in 2 weeks? Reputation being developed by this guy, and its not a good one.

I don’t think it was dirty either. It’s still a contact sport people will get hurt, every time someone does it doesn’t mean it was a dirty hit. He nailed little with the shoulder not the elbow he’s around 6 inches taller than him so the head contact was difficult to avoid. The only thing that could be said is he may of left his feet a little bit but nothing worthy of even considering a suspension. Toughen up hockey world before they turn the nhl into roller hockey

I saw this hit last night and thought it was dirty, but not the punishable type beyond the sin-bin. However, Gudbranson should have been suspended a game or two for the cross-check to the back of Erat last Saturday. Erat’s numbers were clearly showing and he was looking at the D-man, which made him defenseless on the boards.

He shouldn’t be suspended and the match penalty should be rescinded. What actually happens? No idea.

This guy’s borderline hits go back before the one on Erat and now this one. He also hit Malkin from behind on Feb. 23, launching him into the boards & giving him a concussion. So that’s THREE borderline hits in the last month and a half, all of which caused injury. If that doesn’t merit a multi-game suspension, then I don’t know what does.

Gudbranson’s quote after the Malkin hit:
“He’s in a vulnerable position. But you can’t pass up a hit.”

Kid clearly needs to be taught a lesson, if Shanahan is serious about getting this sort of stuff out of the game. 3-5 games in a suit & tie ought to do it.

Gudbranson strikes again. Just boarded Matt Cooke with a cheap shot between the numbers. That’s three dirty hits in, what, a week? At least four since Feb. How can Shanahan not suspend this goon now? The only time he’s not taking cheap shots is when he’s not playing.
