Hobey Baker winner Drew LeBlanc signs with Chicago Blackhawks

Apr 12, 2013, 8:47 PM EDT

Drew LeBlanc of St. Cloud State won the 2013 Hobey Baker trophy on Friday, and then, just a few hours later on the same day, he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Not a bad way to begin the weekend.

According to ESPN Chicago, it’s a one-year contract for the 23-year-old LeBlanc, who had 50 points this season for St. Cloud State.

Nice pickup. He goes to a situation where he doesn’t have to be ‘the guy.’ He should hope that he follows the same maturation path Saad has traveled. Looking forward to seeing him play in the short term.

Word is he’ll report to the Hawks and wear #14. Wouldn’t he go to Rockford? Or is he good enough to crack the Chicago roster right off the bat?

I cant him being able to crack the Hawks lineup, he’s not that mythical 2nd line center. Hawks are stacked and healthy everywhere else. Probably a few practices to see how good he really is. The 1 year term I find interesting

Turns out the one year deal is due to his age – he’ll be a restricted free agent after this season

    He’s 23, unless you’re a goalie or a stay at home Dman you’re already a bust

Matt Read, signed at 24 out of Bemidji State. Excellent two-way forward. Ya never know.

Didnt Martin St.Louis win a Hart trophy….and wasnt he an undrafted FA? Too far in the past? Ok, how about Cory Conacher? So much for that argument.

This guy is from the WCHA who has churned out pro talent in droves since inception.(Toewes, Pronger, Oshie, Vanek, and Stafford just to name a few) This guy will be a beast.
