Video: Taylor Hall takes a huge hit, unleashes a big slash

Apr 11, 2013, 1:50 AM EDT

There aren’t many No.1 overall picks who boast tempers like Taylor Hall has shown. After Wednesday, that volatile streak might just earn him another suspension.

Hall’s eventful evening really kicked off in the first period of tonight’s eventual 3-1 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes, as Martin Hanzal delivered this huge hit on him:

There’s a good chance that Hall, 21, was steaming mad from that blow all evening long. That anger might cost him after this slash on Zbynek Michalek, though (via SB Nation):

Hall already received a two-game suspension earlier this season for his questionable hit on Cal Clutterbuck.

That isn’t the only time a possible lack of control cost Hall, either, as his rookie season was cut short due to an injury he suffered during an ill-advised hit.

It’s the Oilers choice to discuss these incidents (or not) with Hall, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the league shared their own feelings about that slash in the next day or two.

Someone needs to smash, smash, SMASH this ol’ boy’s face in

    • jennettalia - Apr 11, 2013 at 2:26 AM

      Cue Corey Potter’s skate.

    • skarimari - Apr 11, 2013 at 3:06 AM

Yeah f*** all you guys. Those kids have taken s*** and abuse for the last two years. It’s about time Hallsy starts channelling his inner Messier. If Tambo can’t sign any real deterrents, the kids need to start taking their own retaliatory cheap shots. Take a run at Hall, better know somebody is going down.

      • ThatGuy - Apr 11, 2013 at 9:33 AM

Who exactly took a run at Hall? The first video with the hit was as clean of an open ice check as you’ll ever seen.

      • koyoteken - Apr 11, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Agreed. That check was textbook and the kind of hitting the league should encourage.

      • imleftcoast - Apr 11, 2013 at 1:35 PM

If you have a problem with Hanzal’s hit, you don’t know a thing about hockey. That was a rock solid, perfect position and totally clean hit. Responding with that slash is bush league. Smid was doing his job, but Hall really should have had to answer for that tomahawk.

Marchand got away with worse during the Stanley Cup Finals, but if you’re not on the Bruins, you could get two or three games for that.

    • kingsfan93 - Apr 11, 2013 at 4:06 AM

      HULK, “SMASH”!!!!

    • bigtganks - Apr 11, 2013 at 11:54 AM

K, I’m being serious here, help me understand the line of hockey etiquette… would it have been “bush league” for Michalek at 0:28 to just punch Hall right in the face? I know I would have liked him to, but I’m serious in asking, or is that “against the code” so to speak?

      • ThatGuy - Apr 11, 2013 at 12:11 PM

After a two hander like that? Well within his rights.

  2. 13datsyuk13 - Apr 11, 2013 at 2:12 AM

Pretty ballsy to do that with Doan on the ice.

    • 19to77 - Apr 11, 2013 at 2:17 AM

Pretty ballsy to hide from him behind a referee.

  3. bigtganks - Apr 11, 2013 at 2:14 AM

He’s the definition of a little douche.

  4. 19to77 - Apr 11, 2013 at 2:15 AM

Kid, if you’re gonna act tough, don’t use your stick, use your bare knuckles. And don’t talk trash from behind the damn ref.

    • esracerx46 - Apr 11, 2013 at 7:47 AM

I think that’s what O’Brien was alluding. It wasnt an ill advised hit that ended Hall’s rookie season. It was an ill advised fight against Derek Dorsett. After that fight Dorsett said, “I hit him and he just fell.” Couldnt have said it better myself

      • 19to77 - Apr 11, 2013 at 10:20 AM

If he’s not tough enough to play that game, he shouldn’t resort to cheap tactics like slashing to try to pretend. He should focus on his skill game and not his growing reputation as a petulant, dirty player.

  5. mjasper24 - Apr 11, 2013 at 2:38 AM

    Light him up already

  6. kingsfan93 - Apr 11, 2013 at 4:12 AM

Taylor Hall is a great player an all, as we all know, but, even knowing so, he needs his butt kicked. I know if I was on that ice at some point when T. Hall is out there, I be going right up to him and teaching him a couple of things.

  7. noozehound - Apr 11, 2013 at 4:52 AM

cheap shot after cheap shot after cheap shot. he’s like Todd Bertuzzi without the talent.

  8. thehighcountrybear - Apr 11, 2013 at 6:08 AM

    Give ’em hell Taylor…

The only way hack happy clowns populating teams like Phoenix will learn to give you room is to feed them a steady diet of timber!

Hit ’em high, stick ’em low, break through the centre
Somebody screamin’ ambulance, yo, he bend a
Ghost like a ninja, whole ‘nother agenda
Yes, we day and night, ready for fight
Plus I spit more through the mic, four fist right
Chest, head, body blow, would leave, anything goes
Broken nose, shatterin’ jaws, spark him with the C-4
P-Sunn did it from the east door
The more I tour, the more I score, watch the lion roar
Through the field, with the skills and agility
Martial art ability, bend the laws of gravity…

  9. ibieiniid - Apr 11, 2013 at 8:11 AM

what a cheap little bi***. dude was just playing the puck aggressively. hope hall gets smashed through some glass next time these 2 teams meet.

  10. mclovinhockey - Apr 11, 2013 at 9:15 AM

Title is a bit misleading, I though hall got levelled then slashed the guy… But hall was getting pushed like every other hockey player who has ever tried protecting the puck and then tomahawked the guy. Very very dirty and the refs missed it hahaha.

    • withseidelinn - Apr 11, 2013 at 9:46 AM

Exactly, he just had a tantrum cus he got worked off the puck. No excuses for that type of crap.

  11. acieu - Apr 11, 2013 at 9:35 AM

    Cheap little jerk

  12. sjsharks66 - Apr 11, 2013 at 9:39 AM

Someone needs to give that kid a few uppercuts. Even it he does not want to fight. Do what Horton did against Carolina. I never really liked Hall. Now i dislike him even more.

  13. prosportswashington - Apr 11, 2013 at 9:42 AM

Slashes are for guys who can’t go toe-to-toe

    • elvispocomo - Apr 11, 2013 at 2:29 PM

Someone should have told that to McSorely.

  14. JoeAvg - Apr 11, 2013 at 10:15 AM

He needs to get big games for this. Vicious slash. This kid’s got to get his emotions in check or he’s gonna hurt somebody bad one day.

  15. ironmike778 - Apr 11, 2013 at 10:23 AM

Wow what a hack job! Hall thinks he’s Paul Bunyan.

  16. cordellanderson - Apr 11, 2013 at 10:59 AM

    Hall Bunyan

  17. wannabebluesplayer - Apr 11, 2013 at 11:10 AM

Hall will get what’s coming to him. Someone is absolutely going to destroy him. That, or he is going to cause the running of this teammates. RNH or Eberle is going to get destroyed by someone and they are going to point right to Hall.

  18. slickvb82 - Apr 11, 2013 at 11:58 AM

DAMN!! That is probably the worst slash I’ve seen, this kid is a complete douchebag and needs to get the SH#T beat out of him!!! The league needs to take control of this little spaz. First the Wild’s Brodin, then the Wild’s Clutterbuck, and now this, the worst of all of them. Hate, hate, hate this kid with a passion.

p.s. glad to see he got rocked earlier in the game!!

  19. wethog66 - Apr 11, 2013 at 12:49 PM

The Diva Jeff Skinner has a temper that would give my 3 year old daughter a run for her money, but I don’t think The Diva is a former 1st overall.

  20. watermelon1 - Apr 11, 2013 at 1:17 PM

Remember a couple years ago when everyone cried about the NHL and media force-feeding Ovechkin vs. Crosby to all of us?

Well, I’d rather hear about that battle before hearing about little punks like Taylor Hall.

    Is it the playoffs yet?!?

    • timsabourin - Apr 11, 2013 at 1:51 PM

I get it, cause the oilers won’t make it

  21. ray2013 - Apr 11, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Hall does get targeted for a fair amount of abuse as the Oilers best player, but that was a clean hit.

One of the biggest complaints about Hall before he was drafted was that he seems to always put himself in situations where he takes massive punishment from opposing players. He tries to hold onto the puck for too long. Seems like he’s watched too many highlight shows, and wants to be the guy who dipsy-doodles through an entire team before scoring.

The slash was a cheap shot, and he should be suspended. He’s not big enough of a star to get just a stern talking to. But the worst slash ever? You need to see Bobby Clark slash Kharlamov in the 72 Summit series. That was worse.

  22. jason9696 - Apr 11, 2013 at 3:18 PM

Taylor Hall is such a pvssy. Nice to see that hit by Martin Hansal on him early on in the game.

  23. imleftcoast - Apr 11, 2013 at 1:50 PM

There was a gold at the 2010 Olympics. I don’t think Luongo was great, but he was good enough and Marty Brodeur wasn’t getting it done.

  24. imleftcoast - Apr 11, 2013 at 1:52 PM

This was supposed to post on the Luongo story. Weird site issues today.

    Yes. The site. 😉
