Video — PHT Extra: Will Flyers buy out Bryzgalov?

Apr 10, 2013, 6:25 PM EDT

If you take goalie/stargazer Ilya Bryzgalov‘s comments at face value, then you believe that he doesn’t care whether the Philadelphia Flyers buy him out or not. A significant part of the hockey population – especially in Philadelphia – does care quite a bit, though.

With that in mind, PHT’s Jason Brough and Mike Halford discussed that possibility on Wednesday; you can enjoy that dialogue in the video below.

Im a caps fun but I love bryz. Sure he may be a bit aloof at times but he has his heart in the right place, all I think he needs is some support. Sheesh when the whole fan base wants you out and the team itself questions your abilities and love for the game id want to distance myself from it all too. Keep youre head up bryz it will all turn out alright for ya buddy

Yeah but he ain’t distancing himself from the 51 million is he ?

The Bryzgalov move is going to end up getting Holmgren fired. Watch. It will come. Seriously, is there any leadership in the Flyers locker room? Giroux is not quite ready to be a leader and he tries to do too much, (even though he is a damn good hockey player, not gonna lie), Bryzgalov is a headcase and is inconsistent doesn’t put in 100% effort, Hartnell is a me monster, the list goes on and on. No discipline. Period. If the Flyers don’t make the playoffs this year, (which they won’t, no doubt about that) then either Lavy or Holmgren (should be Holmgren) will need to go.

You always have so much to say, yet you say so little !

Thanks for the compliment I pride myself on being efficient

Can you think of any other industry (besides the Federal Gov’t) where you can cost an organization that much money…and still keep your job? Briere and Bryz…both needing bought out…Snider would be dumb to keep Holmgren there. He got his chance as a player…EH. as a coach..FAIL…as a GM…WTF.

    • flyerkidd - Apr 11, 2013 at 8:56 AM

I agree Holmgren will take the fall for Bryz but if anyone out there believes the Bryz move wasn’t a 100% edict from Snider you have issues. Snider totally overreacted after 2010. He got the best goalie on the market..but was he really worth $51M. I think the answer is obvious.

What is this, the 5th Bryzgalov article today?

    “Pennsylvania Hockey Talk”

    • girouxvy - Apr 10, 2013 at 8:17 PM

This is such “non hockey news”. Who cares? He said this – He did this – Whatever. The season is coming down to the wire and this is what is being talked about. Amazing.

  5. JoeAvg - Apr 10, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Bryzzzz (his name will now forever be spelled that way) just can’t handle pressure. If you recall, he indeed was “lights-out” for Phoenix but only during the regular season. He would come up lame in the playoffs. Which is why everyone was scratching their heads when Philly signed him to this deal. It now appears that he can’t handle the scrutiny of media attention during the regular season in a city that actually cares about hockey.

Why so many articles about an irrelevant team like Philly? Lets hear about the real teams, playoffs are coming up.

      The Flyers are HOCKEY

  7. President Charles Logan - Apr 10, 2013 at 7:53 PM

why is this even a question?? he’s a goner , everyone knows it

  8. bobhpine - Apr 10, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Too bad for Philthy fans they can’t amnesty that entire squad of overpaid losers. Hartnell, briere, Timonen, mezaros…to say nothing of that sweet 35+ contract for Pronger. That goalie has been one of the better players on that awful team despite being so horribly overworked. The pathological obsession with goaltenders is so pervasive that it obviously extends beyond the lunkhead fans of this franchise. It’s hard to understand.

    But whatever.

I enjoy the angst. Fail on, failures!

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 10, 2013 at 8:08 PM

And your an underpaid loser so whats your point ?

    Duh! Yeah they will

  12. flyeredup - Apr 10, 2013 at 9:18 PM

Holmgren needs canned. He dealt Richards, JVR, Carter, Bobrovsky

    • President Charles Logan - Apr 10, 2013 at 11:46 PM

jvr sucked and bob wasnt going to get any better if he stayed, where he messed up was trading the dry island rebels

How many goalies the Philadelphia Flyers have had since year 2000?

    As far as I can remember they had;

Roman Cechmanek, Martin Biron, Brian Boucher, Sean Burke, Ray Emery, Robert Esche, Jeff Hackett, Michael Leighton, Antero Nittymaki, and NOW ILYA Bryzgalov.

Out of the 10 goalies listed, 7 or 8 of them did not live up to expectations. The only few goalies that came close to being successful for the Flyers were; Cechmanek, Boucher, and Esche due not only regular season, but too the only real ones that made a push in the playoffs for the Flyers.

As for Bryz, watching him when in Anaheim and Phoenix was great. I just don’t know what went wrong for Bryzgalov since going to the Flyers. It’s crazy seeing him being the way he is in Philly. I don’t think it is because the uniforms, the fans, knowing it is a sports city, or the media attn. he get more of there.

If anything, why don’t the Philadelphia Flyers get rid of their goalie coach or something? By doing so, get a proven goalie coach that is a winner.

On top of all this above here, I just want to also mention that, I think the Philadelphia Flyers need to go back to their old ways being the big nasty hard team to play against.
