Report: Multiple players confirm Bryz closed his eyes during team meeting

The Ilya Bryzgalov sleep story isn’t going away in Philadelphia.

From the Daily News:

Despite public denials from four Flyers players and coach Peter Laviolette, multiple sources confirmed to the Daily News that goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov did in fact “doze off” during a team meeting on Monday.

His sleep habits, however, were not the reason for Steve Mason making his first start as a Flyer on Tuesday on Long Island in the team’s biggest game of the season.

The paper quoted one anonymous player about the alleged incident.

“Whether he was actually sleeping or not, no one knows for sure,” said the player. “It seemed like he may have been doing it to get a rise out of other players. I’m not really sure why he did it, or if he was faking it. Either way, it seemed to catch and lot of people by surprise and angered a few people.”

Bryzgalov was reportedly told before the meeting that he wouldn’t be starting Tuesday against the Islanders, so perhaps that’s why he felt like he could sleep — or fake like he was sleeping “to get a rise out of other players” — during the meeting.

If he did indeed close his eyes during the meeting.

At any rate, this is what it’s come to in Philadelphia — a story about a player who may or may not have been sleeping in a team meeting.

Update:

From CSNPhilly.com

A team source vehemently denied that Bryzgalov was sleeping, saying that someone is trying to plant things in the media with the intention of hurting the club. This source said Bryzgalov was legitimately tired, and if there were other reasons for him to not play Tuesday, none were because he was sleeping, because he was not.

How did this news even make it out of the locker/meeting room in the first place? No wonder this team sits where they do in the standing.

    • 19to77 - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Their locker room must be an absolute wreck. Claude Giroux clearly can’t assert the control his predecessors did. Ridiculous antics, embarrassing media headlines like this and comically awful losing streaks didn’t seem to happen under the direction of Richards or Pronger.

what, do you save these up? if not, stop typing the player’s name in the article title into youtube and showing us internet videos that doesn’t even relate to the story. I hate when people that I KNOW make me watch videos, let alone strangers (Canucks fans with a strange hatred of the Flyers) on a message board.

i bet you’ve said this more than one time in your life: “Dude, YOU HAVEN’T SEEN CHOCOLATE RAIN!?” ::pulls out smartphone::

      • withseidelinn - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:49 PM

How were you made to watch this video? Little angry today buddy??

      • ibieiniid - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:53 PM

apologies, TRY to make me watch videos*

and i’d rather refer to it as troll’y (yes with an apostrophe). this Canucks guy just enjoys my team missing playoffs too much…. allow me some troll time, I’ll get over it.

      • canucks30 - Apr 10, 2013 at 7:20 PM

It’s not that I hate the Flyers (I don’t) It’s just the Flyers are the laughingstock of the NHL right now just like the Canucks were during the Mark Messier era from 1997-2000.

As for the video, it appears as if Bryzgalov also doses off during games. Also it appears as if I’m not the only one who finds said videos funny.

Who won the division last night? What team won their game last night?

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 10, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Sure that wasn’t Crosby playin goal !

  3. ml3939 - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Imagine how tough it must be listening to Laviolette and the coaching talking about how they need to play defense every game over and over again. I’d fall asleep too.

  4. ibieiniid - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:33 PM

are we sure these anonymous sources weren’t talking about him dozing off in the Saturday game?

    • vbcaps - Apr 10, 2013 at 9:46 PM

touche. Cant believe everything you read especially from an “anonymous” source

  5. buffalomafia - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:33 PM

I can see Ryan Miller in a Flyers jerset next season?

  6. 950003cups - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:35 PM

Maybe he thought saw a bear, and played dead. Isn’t that what they teach you to do? It was a false alarm. Probably was Hartnell getting out of the shower.

  7. jimw81 - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:36 PM

if i knew i was getting buyout, i would of sleep through rest of the season. i wonder how the fans will react to him tomorrow night. he is scheduled to start. But Add Dysfunctional to Paul Holmgren’s accomplishments as GM of Philadelphia Flyers.

    • jimw81 - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:38 PM

funny part about all this is that beat writers for flyers are so clueless and dont know squat about hockey.

    • ibieiniid - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:39 PM

hey, didn’t you say this story was confirmed to be false?

I see what you did there Jason Brough. trolling via another article. i like your style.

      • jimw81 - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:48 PM

yes, i did say this. I was wrong i’ll eat crow for it. but i didnt like about the story is linking to tmz style site that never covers the team on daily basis and person only talks flyers when something like this happens. that’s the problem i have with this story.

      • ibieiniid - Apr 10, 2013 at 4:51 PM

why do you keep saying this? TMZ style site. is it because the website LOOKS like the TMZ site? it’s a Philly radio station, they cover the Flyers all the time. in fact, they AIR the games.

      • jimw81 - Apr 10, 2013 at 5:14 PM

Know what, i take everything back.

You wanna know where roughly 90% of the goalie issues in Philadelphia stem from? The media.

Seravelli named no sources his story. That’s cowardice. We have players, coaches, and the GM on record saying the report is false. So I should believe Seravelli and his “sources” because he wrote the story after the denials took place? Plus if anyone took time and went on a website and saw Bryz stats. He leads the league in minutes played, games played.

It’s Roberto Luongo time for the Philadelphia Flyers

  10. lonespeed - Apr 10, 2013 at 5:10 PM

What do you tell a goalie during a team meeting anyway? ‘Hey, stop the puck every time it comes your way’…’Ya, I got it coach’.

  11. whammy71 - Apr 10, 2013 at 5:26 PM

    Only thing left to say……..whammy!

Oh, and PhillyPhalicSymbol – wherever you are……get those clubs out……almost golf time!

  12. malkinrulez - Apr 10, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Seems like Bryz is the fall guy. I agree he has had some shaky moments but most games I’ve watched he has played well. If I was a Flyers fan I would be pulling my hair out over the disappearance of the offense. You look at the roster and u would assume they would score more. Will be an interesting off season in Philly.

    • jimw81 - Apr 10, 2013 at 6:16 PM

no it irresponsible journalism that was started by Randy Miller and followed up by Seravelli who know nothing about hockey.

  13. sjsharks66 - Apr 10, 2013 at 5:59 PM

What a snitch! Player meetings should not be talked about in the media.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

  15. jaybaileys - Apr 10, 2013 at 6:37 PM

Why don’t they just ask Howie Esken? He obviously has the pulse of the NHL at his fingertips. He scooped everyone on Crosby being done for the year…. oh wait, maybe…..

  16. letsgopens8771 - Apr 10, 2013 at 6:54 PM

He wasn’t sleeping, he was just meditating on the universe.

  17. thehighcountrybear - Apr 10, 2013 at 6:57 PM

Bryz wasn’t sleeping, he was thinking…

the space is Spirit in its attenuated form; while matter is crystallized space or Spirit. Spirit in manifestation is dual, that which we see as Form is the negative manifestation of Spirit–crystallized and inert. The positive pole of Spirit manifests as Life, galvanizing the negative Form into action, but both Life and Form originated in Spirit, Space, Chaos! On the other hand, Chaos is not a state which has existed in the past and has now entirely disappeared. It is all around us at the present moment. Were it not that old forms–having outlived their usefulness–are constantly being resolved back into that Chaos, which is also as constantly giving birth to new forms, there could be no progress; the work of evolution would cease and stagnation would prevent the possibility of advancement…?

    I think, so I am…

    • drone501 - Apr 11, 2013 at 9:26 AM

yeah he was thinking how do i get the hell out of philly

  18. myroncopesflask - Apr 10, 2013 at 7:16 PM

Who wouldn’t wait to close their eyes in that meeting? Hell the entire team closed there eyes and have feel asleep behind the wheel of the season at very early point in this season. Not saying it is all his fault but the coach has lost that locker room. I know I’m looking at it is a Pens fan but I have seen this play out here when disco Dan was hired.
I’m trying to wrap my head around why the Flyers did not make the move within minutes of Lindy Ruff becoming available. He is exactly what the Flyers need to get to the next level and the team would have been better off making that move a month ago so he could spend the rest of the season looking at that roster. After the season they would have been able to buy out the pieces that don’t fit due to the new CBA. This type of wait and see mentality is a microcosm of everything that is holding the Flyers back. That being said I am still a Pens fan and I can’t help but laugh at the antiquated business\playing philosophy the Flyers live and die by… well mostly die by…1975

  19. pitpenguinsrulez - Apr 10, 2013 at 7:20 PM

…Maybe WWE could use Bryzaster and the writers for the Flyers as part of there new creative team cause this is just one big old soap opera with Bryz

  20. whosennext - Apr 10, 2013 at 7:20 PM

For all us Flyer haters this is great. Just sitting back watching them implode on themselves. Next thing you know they will be missing the playoffs. Oops, that is a forgone conclusion that they have no chance in LLEH (that word is spelled backwards Flyers) of making the playoffs. Wish I could say I will miss you in the playoffs but that would be a lie. I hear the FAT LADY singing as your playoff chances evaporate.

Was the “best player in the world” talking? Showing of his captain’s leadership skills?
That would put me to sleep also.

  23. crazemastercraze - Apr 10, 2013 at 7:59 PM

The best part of the story?: watching all the deluded Flyers fans get all bent out of shape. Just sit back with some popcorn and watch the train wreck unfold. Bwahahahahaha

Just let the poor guy go. He’s suffered enough.

  25. bobhpine - Apr 10, 2013 at 8:17 PM

Da bess player in da worl needs some more jam to stand up to an intimidating guy like Bryz. Maybe being intentionally overworked has the spaceman a little perturbed. He’s showing that franchise the same respect they’re showing him.

Bryz obviously hates the Flyers just like every other humanoid of average intelligence or above.

    Fight the good fight Bryz.

    Importance of sleep HUMANGUS BEEEG.
