Habs re-sign G Budaj: Two years, $2.8 million

On Tuesday, the Montreal Canadiens announced they re-signed backup goaltender Peter Budaj to a two-year deal.

ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reports the deal has an average annual value of $1.4 million.

Budaj, 30, joined the Canadiens in 2011 after spending the first six season of his career with the Avalanche organization.

The Slovak netminder had an average first year with the Habs — 5-7-5, .912 save percentage, 2.55 GAA — but has been one of the league’s best backups this season.

Providing solid relief for No. 1 Carey Price, Budaj has gone 6-1-1 with a .917 save percentage and 2.28 GAA. He also recorded his first shutout as a Canadien — a 19-save effort against Carolina in February.

In a related story, Budaj will start for Montreal on Thursday when it takes on the Sabres in Buffalo.
