This should be interesting: Ott rips Sabres fans for booing team

Steve Ott had some harsh words for Buffalo Sabres fans today.

Which is notable, because Ott plays for the Sabres.

In an interview with WGR Radio, the 30-year-old forward expressed his disappointment with the boos the team has heard this season at the First Niagara Center.

“I think it’s completely ridiculous, to be honest with you,” Ott said, per the Buffalo News. “We go into other buildings, we’ve won a lot of games and teams should have the same amount of frustration, sold-out buildings and it’s funny becaue they’re continuing to cheer on their team. They stand behind their team. They respect the work ethic and everything else.

“It’s disheartening when we did get hemmed in our zone and they’re basically mocking us when you get up past the blueline and you finally get it in their zone after I guess you could say that minute and a half shift when they didn’t have a scoring opportunity. I guess you can say it was more the mocking of my teammates and everything else that probably pissed a lot of guys off, including myself.

“You’re a fan of the Buffalo Sabres and hopefully you come to cheer us on and motivate us to be good. We’ve got a lot of young players on this team and they definitely don’t deserve to be booed. They deserve to have that excitement and energy. It’s definitely not their fault for the last six years of frustration that’s gone on.”

While Ott’s frustration is understandable, the Sabres are hardly the only team that’s ever been booed by its fans. And it’s often the teams with the most passionate fans that hear it the loudest. When expectations are high, that’s what happens when expectations aren’t met.

Shortly after his interview, Ott took to Twitter with a more positive message for the fans:

The Sabres — winners of three straight games — play the Jets tonight in Winnipeg.

I not sure what other Sabres fan think, but this is Otts welcome to Buffalo moment. He has not been stuck watching this team for the past 5 years.

The Sabres as a whole need to try and sit on the other side of the glass. Fans have been pumping their money into the Sabres for years, and getting no return. While I think booing is dumb, fans have every right to do so. It’s there way of having their voices be heard. The real issue is Sabres players seem to have forgotten about the first 3/4 of the season. If the players don’t want fans who love their team and understand the game they should go play in FLA. – See more at:

Bunch of whinny crybabies! Try being a Leaf fan bozo. I’ve been a die hard my whole life and have never booed once….well, maybe a referee or two, but never the Leafs. If any teams fans have had it harder I’d like to know who! If you’re a fan then you should act like one. Booing doesn’t help anything…it can hurt your teams performance and makes you look like an a$$, period. While cheering them on can actually help. The fault in Buffalo lies on ownership. So if you want to raise a stink start there instead of booing the players like a bunch of sixth graders…..

      • Helper Sports - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:19 PM

I agree, The owner ship has dropped the ball. The crying is coming from Ott and Miller. I’ll give Ott as mall break because he hasn’t been in Buffalo long. But, Miller should know not to mouth off. His play is average, and up until the past few weeks he was unreliable. If the Sabres want the fans to be quite, then they had better keep winning. Fans in Buffalo have been pumping money into the team with out any return for years. Times up.

      • tatdue - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:46 PM

Oh Jesus, cry me a river already…..did I not mention that I am a Leaf fan? “Fans in Buffalo have been pumping money into the team with out any return for years. Times up” That’s laughable at least!

      • orvee1 - Apr 9, 2013 at 3:26 PM

Leafs Fan, Since this will be the first time your team has earned a playoff spot in mrethatn a decade, I would like to remind you that it is appropriate to burn your city to the ground if you win a series.

      • 950003cups - Apr 9, 2013 at 4:36 PM

^^^ Are you confusing Toronto with Vancouver?

      • badintent - Apr 9, 2013 at 9:03 PM

booing the Canadians ? Phil Eposito can tell you chumps all about how that goes playing the Russians in 1972 . Go Curl or ice fish.

    • 950003cups - Apr 9, 2013 at 4:38 PM

When you get this treatment by your home crowd, THEN and only THEN can you complain. Until then, SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE!

  3. DonkeyStick - Apr 9, 2013 at 12:48 PM

No Steve, what’s ridiculous is your fighting skills.

  4. whitdog23 - Apr 9, 2013 at 12:57 PM

who’s steve ott ? player or coach? article doesn’t say

  5. sjsharks66 - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:03 PM

San Jose loves it’s hockey, but the fans still boo the team. It happens ott.

  6. flyerguy73 - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:10 PM

Ott is a talentless punk, and obviously a crybaby. Donkey stick nailed it. He likes to instigate, but doesn’t want to fight. What a woman!

    • tatdue - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:13 PM

So what are you saying, you want him on your team?

    • buddysguys - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:14 PM

your right he has only fought 104 times in his NHL career. What a little baby.

      • jjregan21 - Apr 9, 2013 at 2:48 PM

Oh yeah, you counting this display of toughness in that count?

He turtles like Sean Avery while getting embarassed and decides to be tough once the ref shows up. This is an excellent representation of his style. I can’t imagine his father takes any pride in seeing him play

    • bigblackzaranek - Apr 9, 2013 at 3:28 PM

haha a flyers fan talking about talentless punks…

  7. phillyphanatic77 - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:13 PM

Jeeze, get some thicker skin Steve. You and your team have played horribly throughout the entire season. Should the fans that pay good money to watch a subpar product just give a respectful golf clap when you’re pinned in your own zone for a minute and a half? This is a joke, you’re making millions of dollars and you wanna blame the teams lack of confidence on the fans not supporting you? You think Buffalo is bad, try playing in Toronto or Philly. Buffalo was supposed to be a playoff team the past two seasons and they’ve fallen embarrassingly short of expectations, and this supposed “tough guy” can’t handle the fans rightfully expressing their frustrations. You’re a professional, act like it.

  8. hockeyflow33 - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:21 PM

Then stop playing like absolute garbage.

  9. mp1131211 - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:28 PM

Wow, sounds like Buffalo fans should just stop going to the games. Obviously you are all a bit frustrated. I think holding onto your wallet would be a more effective display of discontent than booing your team that is trying to give you reason to cheer.

It’s entertainment- stop being so damn serious, buffalo.

  10. pftbillsfan - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:31 PM

Im a Buffalo Sabres fan and I still like Ott. I also won’t boo when they suck now because I like him that much, a lot of fans feel the same way.

  11. mp1131211 - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:36 PM

Also, at least you have a hockey team to go watch… Seriously, the responses here to Ott’s comments are super lame. No one was forced to pay anything to the sabres.

  12. buffalomafia - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:41 PM

Hey Ott big deal you could kinda fight!

    Sabres have no scoring!

Sabres were thinking of having Ott or Kaleta next captain! What a train wreck that is!

No wonder why Miller wants to be traded!

Also 6’6″ 260lb Tinker Bell Myers gets flopped around like a rag doll!

Did I forget to say, booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. thedavesiknowiknow - Apr 9, 2013 at 1:48 PM

in fairness to the booing fans: Jersey did have the puck in our end for over 2 minutes at one point. Stafford alone was responsible for 4 keeps for Jersey, because he is the poor man’s Ryan Leaf. I’m so numb to Sabres hockey, I didn’t boo, or feel much of anything but indifference. It’s great that they have a guy with character like Ott has. Now, if they could get more than one guy like that, at least they’d be respectable.

  14. philly06 - Apr 9, 2013 at 2:09 PM

HA! Nobody likes or wants you steve ott. they boo you because your not doing your job. your not winning. this guy wouldn’t last a minute in philly and thank god cause we certainly don’t want him

    • elemeno89 - Apr 9, 2013 at 4:42 PM

YOU’RE. Jesus if YOU’RE going to complain at least go back to elementary school and re-learn YOUR basic grammar skills.

  15. timmyp716 - Apr 9, 2013 at 2:09 PM

    To Steve Ott,
This will probably cause more “mocking” and “boo-ing”

    To Sabres Fans,
You do realize we are in a minor rebuild and Darcy said we are looking towards next year?
Give these guys a chance…….or come back next year.

  16. chanceoffleury1 - Apr 9, 2013 at 2:36 PM

I think the Buffalo Sabres are going through a mid-life crisis. They turned 43 this year and realized they still want to do so much but are getting more and more stuck in their ways and are having trouble seeing a way out. It all makes sense now.

  17. dforce1973 - Apr 9, 2013 at 2:39 PM

If people listened to the interview this morning, Ott was saying it’s ridiculous that fans boo when the score is 0-0 or 1-1. He said he would hope for the fans to give the team positive energy instead of booing. And I agree. If the score is 8-0, that’s one thing. But when the game is close, help the team out. Listen to the interview people.

  18. dforce1973 - Apr 9, 2013 at 2:41 PM

And I bet all the Philly fans here would love to have him on they’re team. I love watching Ott now. I hated him in Dallas. The fact that Philly fan goes out of they’re way to bash him, says they love to have him.

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 9, 2013 at 3:06 PM

Although I wouldn’t be averse to having Ott in Philly, we already have plenty of productive agitators.

  19. sabatimus - Apr 9, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Oh there’s Brave Steve! There he is!

    Brave Steve!

  20. travishenryskid - Apr 9, 2013 at 3:00 PM

They were winning while the booing was going on. Buffalo has a dark cloud hovering over it and there is a negative charge in the arena all the time. I moved from Buffalo and it was the best thing I could’ve done. The negativity there is depressing and unhealthy.

  21. buffalomafia - Apr 9, 2013 at 3:23 PM

You are right phillyfanatic!!! You are sooooo riiiiiight!

  22. mobil4life - Apr 9, 2013 at 4:10 PM

Flyer guy. You have no room to talk. Coming from a flyers fan your team is overrated every year and then does crap. Wait that goes for every Philly team in every sport.

  23. 950003cups - Apr 9, 2013 at 4:33 PM

Hey STEVE OTT!! You wanna see a team really get boo’d by its home crowd??? LOL

  24. deltachi8 - Apr 9, 2013 at 8:32 PM

  25. billsin20xx - Apr 9, 2013 at 10:55 PM

Steve – it’s our only way of letting your owner know we think most of the team sucks, thaty he needs to get rid of Regier ASAP and put a teamthat we can cheer for out there!!
And notice (up until this rant) that no one booed you, because we as fans appreciate effort, and you always give effort. Letting the devils control the puck as long as they did was the result of lack of effort.

  26. richc111 - Apr 10, 2013 at 12:14 AM

I split season tickets and I boo sometimes, you know why? EFFORT, case in point watch the highlight from The Jets and their 3rd goal. Watch Vanek who I guess is our best player give the puck away and then coast behind Ladd with 23 second left in the period and watches him score. NO EFFORT! This has been happening in Buffalo for years. There is way too much coasting going around with this team and the fans see it. Oh by the way out best player (Vanek) was a -4 tonight. How about booing that!

  27. Helper Sports - Apr 10, 2013 at 8:19 AM

Last night should show Ott why fans boo.

  28. badintent - Apr 9, 2013 at 9:12 PM

oh hell. Here I thought it was to build more ice rinks, which is all I read about in the Sun and Province non stop for 12 years. Can we get some $$ to clean up all the debris from japan’s tsunami too ? The lifeguard stations are glowing green.
Maybe they can also get rid of the Idle no more crap as well by allowing the natives to have casinos on their reservations and paying taxes like the rest of us do..And elimating affirmative action hiring in liquor stores for natives. Liquor is the problem, why the hell would they encourage an addict to be around his addiction 8 hours a day is beyond me..20 years of left wing liberal french communism has made canada a joke.
