Check out the 2014 Winter Classic jerseys

Apr 7, 2013, 11:41 AM EDT

Once a venue is determined for a Winter Classic, the next question crops up: what will each team wear? Two “Original Six” franchises in the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs will compete in the 2014 Winter Classic, so it’s not surprising that both teams had plenty of designs to choose from.

(Which probably explains why it was easier for them to avoid what some might call an eye sore.)

The two teams’ designs were unveiled during Sunday’s big press conference, and it’s safe to assume that they’ll probably become hot-selling items for their respective fan bases.

Here’s the Detroit model:

Not to be outdone, this is what the Maple Leafs will wear:

Fantastic stuff, huh? (Locks wallet in a vault.)

Not a fan of either team, but those are nice!

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:11 PM

I don’t like the jerseys, I just agreed with you about not being a fan of either team

  2. jdrew506 - Apr 7, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Yeah they are nice but come on James this is what you consider news? There are alot more stories out there with the playoffs around the corner and this is what you write about. Looks like your wallet is not the only think you locked in your safe, you should check if your brain is still in there also.

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:12 PM

      This is news tho!

    • churdus - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:29 PM

this is a better story than 90% of the stuff I see on

  3. ethanmacleod1685 - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:13 PM

So it’s basically Torontos alternate jersey then

No this is a footnote about a game that will be played in about a year from now. The only reason they realeased these jerseys now is so the NHL can make as much money as they can off the sales. We have the playoff coming at the end of the month and there are alot more compeling stories on how the playoff race is shaping up.

    • 8man - Apr 7, 2013 at 5:56 PM

And fans of both clubs are already scurrying to get theirs. And some people who aren’t fans are also. Great stuff. It’s a celebration of hockey and a celebration of the new year. And being a Bruins fan, other than the Bs, I can’t think of two franchises more worthy or a venue better.

Wow! Leafs! Wings! Big House! Sweet!

  5. vshehane - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:20 PM

    Don’t care.

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Apr 7, 2013 at 2:48 PM

We’re all eternally grateful to you for ending our suspense and telling us your feelings on the matter.

  6. mclovinhockey - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:30 PM

Looks nice, not sure why they both get to wear darks.

Hasn’t happened yet in the classic, not sure why it gets to happen now.

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Apr 7, 2013 at 2:50 PM

We’ll explain why when you are older. For now though, if you get one of these newfangled color TV’s you should be able to tell the teams apart.

  7. jdrew506 - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:38 PM

That is a sad comment about but still does not make this a story.

  8. jdrew506 - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:46 PM

Reporting about how the jets and caps keep trading off from 3rd to 10th place, the fact that Toronto is probably going to make the playoffs since 2003-2004, the fact that the Islanders are pushing to make the playoffs since 2006-2007, the fact that 6 points is the difference between 12-8th place those are stories. It’s just sad that we are not talking about those instead of what jerseys for ONE game next season are going to look like.

A nice article by comrade O’Brien and full marks to the NHL (ie: Commissioner Gary Bettman) for selecting these simple yet “wonderful” costumes! I always become positively “ill” whenever I see these European soccer players prancing around in their ugly and “spineless” corporate garb promoting the likes of Samsung, Ethiad, Vodafone and AIG. Rather than displaying their own city runes and colors with pride, these “sellouts” choose instead to pay homage to a bunch of “faceless” fascist pig corporations who know nothing about civic pride and honor. All they know or care about is “money” and nothing more.

Well thank God that’s not the case here in North America with the NHL. Thanks to Gary Bettman and his excellent crew, the NHL continues to always do the “right” thing by honoring tradition while at the same time proving that less is more, more often than not.

ps: I wish the league would go back to having “white and clean” boards again. After 20 “plus” years of being exposed to this “signage” garbage everywhere, I can still honestly say that I’ve yet to purchase “junk food” or bought “car insurance” because of seeing some “junk” advertising at a hockey game! In fact to me, all this ugly and useless corporate advertising is nothing more than graffiti … though it could be argued that in some cases it’s bordering on an unmitigated “vandalism of property”.

eh, they’re okay but nothing really too special. Leafs is better.

  11. jdrew506 - Apr 7, 2013 at 1:22 PM

Wow, you must work for the NHL or NBC Sports talk. I live hockey however Bettman must be the worst commissioner in sports. He has allowed 3 lockouts under his great leadership but let’s forgive and forget cause he chooses retro jerseys, yeah that makes sence. And O’Brain has no idea what a good compelling stories is if someone smacked him in the face with it.

*** earlier today out on the great plains ***

Blomfeld: who is this lone rider before us whose mouth spews with words of hate ?

Ten Bears: it is “he” jdrew, the one who is incapable of speaking the King’s English …

Crazy Dog: let’s kill him ! … he’s all alone and I hate guys like him !

Blomfeld: yes brothers, we will kill him … his words of hate must be heard no more…

  13. jdrew506 - Apr 7, 2013 at 1:49 PM

Wow and I am the one spewing hate? I guess you would rather read puff pieces then real compelling stories of what is actually happening today vs a year from now.

  14. mclovinhockey - Apr 7, 2013 at 1:59 PM

    Blom VS Jdrew.

Blom with the early death threat in his one act play.

Jdrew using common sense as his weapon of choice, despite the few forgivable grammatical errors.

Still a better love story than Twilight

    • blomfeld - Apr 7, 2013 at 2:33 PM

*** on the trail heading into town ***

Blomfeld & friends: halt there ! … just where do you boys think you’re going ?

Mclovin & jdrew: ugh ?… we’s was just head’n into town like ?

Blomfeld: well word is that you boy’s can’t be speak the King’s English ?

Mclovin jdrew: oh no, we’s can do that ! … in fact, we’s really like good grammar and such !

      Blomfeld & friends: alright boys, let ’em have it ! … KAPOW ! .. KABOOM ! .. KAZAM !

  15. tdrusher225 - Apr 7, 2013 at 2:03 PM

    Those are sweet!

  16. letsgopens8771 - Apr 7, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Nice unis, but the Wings jerseys look just a little bit better. Toronto’s is really cool as well except for the 3rd and 4th stripes on the arms.

  17. mclovinhockey - Apr 7, 2013 at 5:00 PM

Oh snap, his one act play is growing.

  18. cameltoews - Apr 7, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Death threats on PHT now. What wholesome blog.

  19. 8man - Apr 7, 2013 at 5:53 PM

Beautiful! Both sweaters are breathtaking. To both the Leafs and Wings, huzzah! It’ll be a wonderful event.

    Go hockey!

  20. dawglb - Apr 7, 2013 at 9:17 PM

Perfect. Two classic cities. Two classic teams. Two well designed jerseys. Well done.
