Ovechkin nets hat trick as Caps win third straight

Ovechkin

Here come the Washington Capitals.

That was the story out of Florida on Saturday as the Caps beat the Panthers 4-3 — on the strength of Alex Ovechkin‘s second hat trick of the season — to move into first place in the Southeast Division and third in the Eastern Conference.

Ovechkin opened the scoring in the first period, on the power play, after Florida defenseman Erik Gudbranson was tossed for boarding Martin Erat. Ovi scored his second at 2:24 of the second period, then completed the hatty 12 minutes later with another PP marker.

The Washington captain also assisted on Mike Ribeiro‘s goal, giving him four points on the night.

The Caps dined out on the power play all night long, going three-for-five with the Ovechkin-Ribeiro-Nicklas Backstrom trio doing the majority of the damage. They combined for nine points all told, and Backstrom moved into third in the NHL with assists (32).

Ovechkin, meanwhile, moved into a tie for second in the NHL in goals, with 23 (tied with New York’s John Tavares).

With the win, the Caps moved even on points with Winnipeg for first in the division — with 40 — but are in first place because they’ve played 38 games to Winnipeg’s 40.

On Fire doesn’t even describe what Ovechkin is right now. Probably should’ve scored five goals tonight.

Four for sure. I think he missed twice on the empty net.

And that cheap call on Hendricks took away a goal as well

Ovi is on FIRE! Nice to see him back to his scoring ways.

I’m glad Ovi is washed up, right guys?

  4. cameltoews - Apr 6, 2013 at 10:19 PM

I don’t know how many people, probably even myself, who said Ovi may be losing it. It’s good to see him back. The NHL is better for it

      Your name is PRICELESS

It’s all about coaching and where the coaches want the players and clearly hunter was no match for that. Bruce just tried to change his ways, he was not in a slump, he was just doing what his coaches told him to do. Look at him now.

    Ovi for MVP? Anyone?

    • ravenscaps48 - Apr 6, 2013 at 11:02 PM

      My current MVP Standings
      1.) Patrick Kane
      2.) Sidney Crosby
      3.) Ryan Getzlaf
      4.) Alex Ovechkin

  7. devilsarethebest - Apr 6, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Kane fell out of the MVP race around the same time as Vanek and Marleau. Crosby can’t win because he’s injured. My MVP standings:1.Stamkos( Leads league in points after Crosby)2. Ovechkin (Brought team from bottom feederto division leader) 3. St. Louis(Main man in helping Stamkos be highest scorer in the league).

i believe you`re just listing the members of the team hat has been struggling horribly since they lost Crosby, but i definitely couldn’t agree with you more that they are all in the MVP race. I believe Bryzgalov is somewhere up there too.

Ovi is so hot right now I’m shocked the ice doesn’t melt the instant he steps on it.

Another great win tonight. Ovi’s move on Kuba for his 2 goal was sick. The puck movement on the PP has become a thing beauty. Lets keep the points train rolling. Go Caps!

Ovechkin is just nasty right now. It really is good for the game to have him back being relevant. Tough to say that as a pens fan but you can’t knock his play and what he brings to the game. I don’t think I have ever seen him take a shift off and I say that meaning when caps-pens play he is all over the place.

Ovechkin actually had 4 goals in this game but one was taken away for whatever reason….
