NHL doesn’t schedule hearing for Del Zotto

Apr 6, 2013, 1:42 PM EDT

Del Zotto hit

It sounds like New York Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto won’t be punished for elbowing Pittsburgh Penguins forward James Neal in the head during Friday’s contest.

Del Zotto didn’t receive a penalty when the hit was initially delivered and the NHL hasn’t scheduled a hearing with him, according to CBC’s Elliotte Friedman. Meanwhile, the Rangers are scheduled to play tonight in Carolina.

The incident occurred in the third period when Del Zotto raised his elbow as Neal collided into him from behind.

“I think they just dumped (the puck) in, and I knew I was going to get hit on the forecheck,” Del Zotto said. “I just tried to kind of reverse hit and brace myself. I’m not sure exactly what happened.”

If you missed the hit, you can view it below:

Depending on the severity of Neal’s injury, it could be another serious blow for a team that has been playing without Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Paul Martin recently.

That’s because it was AAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWSOME !

    • sportsfreak13 - Apr 6, 2013 at 3:26 PM

Only a flyer fan would think a hit that causes a concussion is awesome. Wonder what lindros, giroux, or pronger would think of your comment. You try to be funny, but your really just a tool. So sad.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 6, 2013 at 4:40 PM

Ok dbag I remember when Kasparitus hit Lindros your fans were as loud as I ever heard them and one of your players highfived him on the bench,so go away fool ! Flyers fans have been hardened by seeing Lindros in a crumpled heap so get use to it ! If your looking for sympathy from flyers fans the only place you will find it is in the dictionary ! Toughen up or stop watchin !

      • sportsfreak13 - Apr 6, 2013 at 4:50 PM

It has nothing to do with being tough, and has every thing to do with being classy. I’m enjoying this jets game though haha.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:14 PM

Iam sure you are enjoying the jets game your afraid of the flyers bouncing you in the first round again ! The flyers will make the eight spot but in the event they don’t Iam enjoying you sweating it out and just so you know I enjoy any and I mean any misfortune your team encounters ! So lets keep it real the feelin is mutual !

      • sportsfreak13 - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:17 PM

Haha we are 3-1 against you this year. You wish we were scared. Keep dreaming buddy.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:27 PM

        Boo !

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 7, 2013 at 5:29 AM

James Neal is a creep could not happen to a nicer guy ! He looked like a cartoon character with little birdies flying around his head ! Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux were on the receiving end of his dirty elbows last year so yes a flyer fan would think him getting one too his chops is Awwwwwwwwwwwesome !

    • ironman721 - Apr 6, 2013 at 4:40 PM

Rooting for injuries, which I hope you are not, is not cool dude.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:01 PM

What about the Kasperitus hit on Lindros you forgot too mention you enjoyed that too ! See you in the first round !

      • ironman721 - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:12 PM

I didn’t enjoy that at all. I never liked Lindros but never wanted to see the guy hurt. I hope the flyers do make the playoffs. It would be a travesty for all if hockey if Pens/Flyers only play 4 regular season games. The ratings alone for that series would be huge for hockey following another stupid lock-out! I still like ya eiggles!

      • mordock57 - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:48 AM

For the record, the Kasparaitus on Lindros hit was upper arm/shoulder to chest. It was clean, it was legal, it was on open ice. Did it clean his clock? Absolutely. But it wasn’t an elbow to the head like Del Zotto on Neal. That’s the difference. Clearly legal hit versus clearly illegal hit. Get a clue and stop wishing harm on the players who are there to entertain us.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 7, 2013 at 5:00 AM

I’ll do what ever I want and the Del Zotto elbow was a thing of beauty and after last years playoffs with neal running around throwing elbows at flyersf it made it even more special !

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 7, 2013 at 5:17 AM

And for the record Crosby slashed the crap out of Giroux’s wrist’s so bad he had to have off season surgery on both of them so when Crosby had surgery on his teethjaw Philly could give two craps ! So get a clue and realize injuries and dirty play is part of the game and stop making more of it than the actual players do with your fake hollow concern for players health ! Nobody is rooting for injuries so stop with that made up line of yours so you can sound like your better than me !

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 7, 2013 at 5:17 AM

if you think that was a good hit then you are a very despicable person and especially if u root for the player to be hurt. sure james neal throws some elbow sometimes but that’s mostly against the flyers because they deserve to be hit. the flyers treat teams like they do they should expect the same thing to happen back to them. As for del zotto he better watch his back the next time he plays the pens. Neal, I hope you are ok and are back soon.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Oh the hypocrisy ! Yinsters are friggin wack !

  2. gamechangingjaw87 - Apr 6, 2013 at 1:52 PM

I heard that The Real Deal was observed chuckling at the replay of the hit 5 minutes later, saying he thought a gnat landed on his perfectly formed chin. Apparently he just faked it for sh!tz & gigs..

    • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 6, 2013 at 2:31 PM

PHT needs to find a way to keep this dbag from making 6 profiles every single day.

  3. mpops86 - Apr 6, 2013 at 1:55 PM

Good. I don’t understand why anyone would think that is malicious. Del Zotto couldn’t do that again if he tried.

  4. ironcity6pak - Apr 6, 2013 at 1:56 PM

    First 2 comments were stupid.

  5. gbar22 - Apr 6, 2013 at 1:57 PM

Isn’t this the second time a ranger has gotten off in the last two or three weeks?

And they say the NHL doesn’t play favorites. Bs.

    • crosberries - Apr 6, 2013 at 2:18 PM

Shanaban a ranger in the midst of a playoff hunt. Never!!!!!!

      • budvw14 - Apr 6, 2013 at 3:23 PM

Shanahan favors the Rangers? In what world? Hagelin an Prust were both suspended during the playoffs last season. Where’s the favoritism?

      • erickilroy - Apr 8, 2013 at 3:06 PM

out of all the teams shanahan has played for, he spent the 2nd shortest amount of time on the rangers.. he started and finished with the devils… you really think he favors the rangers? come on… wake up .. if he favors the rangers, why wasn’t max paciorety suspended when he gave ryan mcdonagh a concussion by boarding him?

    • jamestherealdealneal - Apr 7, 2013 at 12:49 PM

exactly. so Im not the only one that sees these guys cheating and favoring.

  6. gamechangingjaw87 - Apr 6, 2013 at 2:09 PM

I agree ironcity6, Dell-Notto shuld be suspended till 2014 season for this cheep shot

  9. biffnasty - Apr 6, 2013 at 2:22 PM

it was clean..however if that happened to cindy,.del zotto would have seen a 25 game suspension

    • killerpgh - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:38 PM

Please list any and all the times that a NHL players has been suspended for doing anything to Crosby? Or just admitt that you’re some young kid that knows nothing about the game.

remember that time in the playoffs last year when james neal threw two elbow headshots on the same shift?

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 6, 2013 at 4:33 PM

      Yup !

  11. Stiller43 - Apr 6, 2013 at 2:26 PM

Yeah, thats a pretty natural place for your arm to be during that play. Look at the rest of his body, and then his right arm. No intent?

  12. gamechangingjaw87 - Apr 6, 2013 at 2:35 PM

You guys are soo right, this Dell Notto fool should get a life ban. What is the league thinking keeping cheep shot artists like hims around?

    • wettwork - Apr 7, 2013 at 10:29 AM

👎Dude I’m a Pen’s fan🐧 ,1 game and tax his ass financially and were good … Life ban maybe just a little harsh what r u thinkin if that’s the case Matt Cooke should be given the death penalty !!!

  14. jdrew506 - Apr 6, 2013 at 2:55 PM

Didnt see the game or the elbow in question, but its a player from the Rangers so i am not suprised that they are not even talking to him about it.

  16. cameltoews - Apr 6, 2013 at 3:16 PM

If you didn’t see the game or the play you should probably not comment at all.

  17. drone501 - Apr 6, 2013 at 3:22 PM

pens fan here, doesn”t look like it was intentional. it looks like he was bracing himself from a possible hit in the back. sorry guys, call it like i see it.

  18. bubblehead22 - Apr 6, 2013 at 3:54 PM

Both of these players have decent reputations and are generally not considered dirty. This incident is a great example of what’s wrong with NHL officiating and supplemental discipline. If its a penalty, it’s a penalty, call it. None of this “let them play” BS, also if a hit to the head is illegal then it’s illegal. Intent should only be considered towards the severity of the discipline.

Flyer fan (most of them) please shut your cheese steak holes. The Flyers are the dirtiest team in the league. I’m fairly certain most hockey fans would agree.

  19. jdrew506 - Apr 6, 2013 at 3:56 PM

Camel my point was not about the play itself, its about the fact that there are certain teams that are treated differently then others. If a play that gets that much attention happened in a game without the Rangers or Penguins it would have atleast gotten a phone call about it. I am not saying he should have been suspended since i did not see it just making an observation on the way the league offices run thing. And instead of trolling my comment maybe you should contribute to the conversation, or maybe you should not comment at all.

    • budvw14 - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:32 PM

You’re an idiot. Other than Nash incident, name one time the league has shown any favoritism towards the Rangers?

      • jdrew506 - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Ouch that hurt, you called me an idiot. Funny thing is you partly answered your own question. Kind of funny that niether Nash or Del Zotto even have hearings when players who have done less have not only had hearings but got suspended and thats this year only. But no the Rangers dont get favored, take off those rose colored glasses and just be honest with yourself about your team. Dont be ashamed to admitt it, I would love if the leauge loved my team like they do yours.

  20. whiteqbs - Apr 6, 2013 at 3:56 PM

Good job NHL!!! Neal doesn’t deserve justice, he’s the head shot king!
Play on, stop crying for once KC pens fans.

  21. broadstbully33 - Apr 6, 2013 at 3:58 PM

Good decision by the league finally. Neal should have been suspended 2x this season and is a dirtball player. He got what he deserves and should thank del zotto for putting him in his place. Maybe Neal will rethink the way he plays and spread it thru the scumbag Pitt locker room.

  22. pitsportfan4life - Apr 6, 2013 at 4:15 PM

This should have been a plenty and he should be suspended..How can you claim to be bracing yourself for a hit when your skates aren’t even on the ice when he hit Neal?? This is a dirty hit all the way around a head hit is a head hit.

  23. ironman721 - Apr 6, 2013 at 4:24 PM

It was an elbow to the face but I never expected a suspension this close to the playoffs.

    • budvw14 - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:45 PM

He was attempting the same hit Morrow put on Moore in the first period.

      • ironman721 - Apr 6, 2013 at 5:52 PM

I didn’t see that one but it must not have been that bad cause nobody left the game and only you care to mention it.

      What the hell u talkin about Cookie Monster👹got a 17 game suspension 10 games left in reg season 2011 !! Remember ??? 24. icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 6, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Not surprising but you have to wonder what he was doing. He could have boxed Neal out without throwing his elbow back and jumping. Trust me, Neal had it coming to him with the many flying ‘bows he has attempted/thrown during Flyers/Pens games. I’m just trying to be objective here (which seems to be optional on these msg boards).

  29. phlyerzpwnu - Apr 6, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Looked dirty…don’t think it was intentional though, good no call on the suspension thing. Pens suck! When we get the 8 seed, we will scramble em up!

  30. live4hockey - Apr 6, 2013 at 7:41 PM

His back was to Neal, not sure how you could say he meant to get him in the head. Ugly hit, bad result, but not suspension worthy. We will need Neal in the playoffs and I would have no problem if they sat him for a week or two. He has been cold anyway. Go Pens!! EffPhilly!!

  31. cameltoews - Apr 6, 2013 at 8:45 PM

If you saw the play you can clearly see it wasn’t on purpose. The people that say it was intentional are just defending their team or hate the rangers. It’s just annoying. Everyone here knows he didn’t mean to knock Neal out of the game. He braced for a hit but he should have kept his elbow down. Plan and simple. It was an accident. It doesn’t deserve a phone call, a hearing, or even a story on this site.

  32. jdrew506 - Apr 6, 2013 at 8:52 PM

Never said it was on purpose, however the fact that he left his feet and hit him with an elbow to the head should result in at least a phone call. And you are probably right that he didnt attempt to hurt however everyother hit to the head especially when the player has left their feet has resulted in fines and suspensions this year, so why should this one not even be question. Again I never said he should be suspended or fined just talked too.

  33. cameltoews - Apr 6, 2013 at 9:53 PM

I understand what you are saying. I know most of us want headshots out of the game. Del Zotto was just bracing I don’t know about leaving his feet he was just trying to make a play, absorb a hit, and move on. The elbow was high and I think he learned his lesson on keeping those down. Correct me if I’m wrong but if he receives a phone call doesn’t he have to get some kind of suspension? If he had to get a suspension that’s why I’m against the call. But, if it’s just to remind him those plays can’t happen and this is his one chance to learn from it ( since I believe he absolutely didnt mean it) then sure a phone call could be made.

  34. jdrew506 - Apr 6, 2013 at 10:57 PM

I do not believe a call has to end in a fine or suspension, they could determine that no further discipline is necessary after talking to the player. It just seems, that when they dismiss the play without following up with the player, they are favoring the team. If they are favoring the team that is not the Rangers fault it is the leagues fault and like I said I just wish they would favor my team like that.

  35. joeyg88 - Apr 7, 2013 at 1:44 AM

why are the penguins so favored in the media? get off their nuts already. team just can’t play physical

  36. nashernation - Apr 7, 2013 at 1:57 AM

The league has not been kind to the Rangers historically. Shanahan suspended Hags in the playoffs last year. MDZ has no history of being a dirty player and not for nothing Neal was taking a run at him on that play.

  37. joewilliesshnoz - Apr 7, 2013 at 6:30 AM

    It’s called hockey, let’em play.

  38. gamechangingjaw87 - Apr 7, 2013 at 6:56 AM

James “I’m very quick to heal” Neal won’t even miss a game, this has been documented as a fact. Besides, a man with his good looks, charm, talent, character and thickness reflects what/who The Franchise is all about. Our posterboy can’t be stopped and this negative talk will not be tolerated by us Pens fans.

  42. shaffer66 - Apr 8, 2013 at 3:32 PM

PENS AND RANGER FANS PLEASE READ THIS!!!!!

This is a totally neutral fan on the outlook of what happend. Black and white the NHL says u are responsible for your stick and body movement period, intentional or not. If u hit a guy in the mouth wth ur stick intentional or not ur goin to the box. U hit a guy high once again, intenional or not its a penalty. He raised his elbow to neals head. Wether u like it or not that’s ELBOWING……PERIOD. there’s no arguing on this thats what happend. Was his elbow high? YES did it come in contact with neals head? YES.. THEN IT IS ELBOWING!!! IF a duck barks does that make it a dog? No its still a duck. A elbow at anyones head is a dangerous situation, people show some class u don’t ever root for a guy getting injured rival or not. U put pads on skate down the ice and get knocked out. Well how did it happen. An elbow to the face that’s how. Its black and white u guys can argue till ur all dead. This was not good for the nhl to not do anything. A hit to anybodys head is supposed to be zero tolerance. Intentional or not guys.

  43. shaffer66 - Apr 8, 2013 at 5:03 PM

One more comment. After reading some of u peoples posts, if u make comments about a player getting a possible career ending injury such as Awesome!!! Ur not a hockey fan ur a psycho. I’m a colorado fan, everyone loves good hits on a player that’s hockey, but u like to see them get upband be ok. These guys are no different from us. We have employers so do they. We get paychecks have familys and bills, so do they. To make a comment about a guy being injured as great, that’s wrong. I gotta be honest the penguins at %100 are scary. Truth be told the Rangers playing pitt full strength is no contest. No knock on New York, but to beat the penguins half strength is nothin to be bragging about. Some people on here are messed up in the head to wish any working man to be hurt. Sorry that’s not a fan.
