Steve Mason’s agent isn’t worried his client will ‘get eaten alive’ in Philly

Steve Mason‘s agent is well aware that his client has been traded to a city with a reputation for chewing up goalies and spitting them out.

He just doesn’t think it’s a big deal.

After all, Philadelphia isn’t the only NHL market where it’s tough to be a goalie.

“That’s OK,” Anton Thun said today in Toronto, per CSNPhilly.com. “There’s lots of places where goaltenders get eaten alive. The reality of it is, you get eaten alive no matter where you play if you’re a goaltender who is not stopping the puck. It’s as simple as that. You get eaten alive in Montreal; you get eaten alive in Toronto; you get eaten alive in New York; and that’s the reality of it. Doesn’t matter. Roberto Luongo gets eaten alive in Vancouver when he lets in a bad goal.

“If you want to go to a marketplace where you can put yourself in a rocking chair, and not worry about performing, hey, that’s OK. That’s not the real world of professional sports.”

Thun also said he expects Mason, 24, will have a one-year contract extension signed with the Flyers “in the next few days.”

Ilya Bryzgalov will get the start in goal tonight versus the Leafs.

The Flyers’ next game is Saturday in Winnipeg.

The way flyers treat their goaltenders, with tough love. I would be worried as well. He needs to be a star or he will hear the boo birds.

Maybe that kind of tough love will push him to be great. Time will tell!

I wonder if hes been introduced to Gina Lynn yet?

A 1 year extension better be at less than half his current cap hit.

Not a knock on Flyers fans really, because I can appreciate their passion, but I wouldn’t want to play there if I was a goalie. I knew the second that Bryzgalov signed his contract that his career was essentially over. Goalies there are cursed, and it doesn’t matter if it’s a 4-0 break that turns into a goal, it’s ALWAYS the goalie’s fault with them.

But then again, maybe I’ve got it all wrong. Just how it looks from an outsider’s perspective.

Bernie Parent still has a key to the city, and does a lot of charitable type work around Philly. Hexy probably has a key as well. NHL didn’t start last year…

      • kicksave1980 - Apr 4, 2013 at 5:11 PM

I’m aware of that. Bernie Parent also retired 3 decades ago.

But kinda like that guy who is on his 12th divorce…when it’s the goalie’s fault pretty much every year, even though it’s a different goalie almost every year, maybe it’s time for the front office to look in the mirror a little.

Your last comment makes sound like you know everything about the Flyers and are so outside of an opinion as your first comment said.

Bryz gets paid to stop the puck not duck out of the way. The Flyers have guys with less padding giving up their bodies to block shots and numb nuts ducks. He is definitely not responsible for all the Flyers woes, just looks bad sometimes.

    • coronakid76 - Apr 4, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Remember Checkmanek would head butt the puck!!!! Goalies could still get a concussion and it’s a knee jerk reaction when something is zipping towards you head or not, you tend to duck.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Apr 4, 2013 at 10:04 PM

Bryz thought that puck was going high thats why he ducked, unfortunately it went in. Hey the guy still has 4 wins in a row so i’m not complaining. Bryz has been pretty solid in net for most of the season.

Brzy has ups and downs I hope we have new back up goalie and Brzy gets the rest he needs. We still need a dman I think a pronger replacement

Look at the number of goalies over the past decade or two who we’ve been told are franchise netminders. Any fanbase would boo having to watch the likes of Leighton, Boucher, Biron, Esche, Cechmanek, Vanbiesbrouck (instead of Curtis Joseph), Emery, Burke, Snow/Old Hextall, Niitymaki, etc. And now an overpriced Bryzgalov. Some of those guys were decent, but most were has-beens or never-were’s.

    • ml3939 - Apr 4, 2013 at 7:11 PM

In defense of Emery, he looked good until he got hurt. As for the others, Cechmanek was a stud in the regular season and a disaster in the post season. Thy also had a shot at Richter when Clarke blew it and got Vanbiesbrouck.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Apr 4, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Oh no I liked some of the guys, it just seems like they either pick the wrong guy or they have bad luck with the right guys. Eventhough Bob Clarke played with Bernie Parent, one of the best goalies ever, he seemed to totally dismiss the importance of a franchise goalie. Emery definitely has ability, as he’s shown this season, but you’re right his hip just stopped him. And Cechmanek was a beast in the regular season (I think he had a 1.98 GAA his 1st yr and like 2.01 his 2nd), but he always came up small in the playoffs. And I think Clarke picked Beezer the Geezer bc of their days in Florida. I remember they also tried to tell us Jeff Hackett would be the answer one year. The franchise is just snake-bitten when it comes to netminders.

      • ml3939 - Apr 4, 2013 at 11:23 PM

Yeah, I wasn’t trying to imply you didn’t like them all. I just always wished Emery didn’t get hurt. Beyond that, my fingers just kept rambling out thoughts as it has been a painful stretch with feint glimpses of hope. Like the all world performance the Flyers put on against the Canadiens on their way to the finals then the awful cup performances topped off by one of the most anticlimactic yet deflating series winning goals I have ever seen

  8. gamechanger87 - Apr 4, 2013 at 4:48 PM

He was introduced to Ginger Linn

    • pitpenguinsrulez - Apr 4, 2013 at 4:50 PM

Hartnell, Giroux, and Voracek gave him the 411 on where to go exactly

  9. jacketsfan7 - Apr 4, 2013 at 5:35 PM

Good luck mason , ill sorta miss you , but I actually think this is a great move , change of scenery and I think Philly will push mason to be great just like he was in 08-09

  10. dutchman1350 - Apr 4, 2013 at 8:07 PM

Mason was a mental midget in Columbus….COLUMBUS. Yeah, this is going to end well.

  11. malkinrulez - Apr 4, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Pelle Lindbergh looked to be a rising star before his accident, although that was 28 years ago

  12. dannythebisforbeast - Apr 5, 2013 at 12:33 AM

flyers fans do not chew up and spit out goalies. Maybe the media is harsh. flyers fans might boo crappy team play but can’t think of a goalie that was “chewed up” by the fans.

  13. capsfan19 - Apr 5, 2013 at 6:28 AM

He couldnt be worse than leighton and boucher… But im sure the flyers will wind up trading pieces to get these guys back! Idiots…
