Trade: Bishop sent to Lightning for Conacher

Goalie Ben Bishop has been traded from Ottawa to Tampa Bay for rookie-of-the-year candidate Cory Conacher and a fourth-round pick.

Bishop, 26, went 8-5-0 with an impressive .922 save percentage this season for Ottawa, but the 6-foot-7 netminder was deemed expendable with Craig Anderson already the Senators’ starter and rookie 21-year-old Robin Lehner showing he’s ready to play in the NHL as well.

Bishop will join a Tampa Bay team that’s received inconsistent goaltending from Anders Lindback, Mathieu Garon and, to a lesser extent, Cedrick Desjardins.

As it stands, Bishop will likely battle Lindback for the number one job going forward. (Both Garon and Desjardins are unrestricted free agents.)

The price the Lightning paid for Bishop was certainly “significant.” Conacher, 23, has 24 points in 35 games, ranking the diminutive Canisius College product second behind only Florida’s Jonathan Huberdeau in NHL rookie scoring.

    Cory Conacher and 4th-round pick.

WOW! They got back a good prospect with Conacher. Good trade for both teams!

hes more than a good prospect, hes already performing on an nhl level and is a front runner for rookie of the year. i was kinda hoping the devils would get bishop

Could prove to be a costly mistake for either GM but the trade addresses each teams needs and long term goals. Well done guys.

Yzerman’s biggest mistake as GM obviously was trading Mike Smith, which has to still eat at him. This isn’t a mulligan, but he sure would like to have that behind him. This is expensive, since Conacher is the real deal. It’s a bit of a shocker.

@boltsfan777 – Mike Smith was run out of town by more than Stevie Y. He was never going to become the goalie his now in Tampa.

Wow, that’s really surprising. I figured he’d go to Tampa but not for Conacher. Very interesting. I was reading the Flyers were trying to get in on Bishop but they sure weren’t offering someone with Conacher’s ability.

The Lightning now have a huge goaltending tandem in the 6’7” Bishop and 6’6” Lindback.

    Whyzerman?

If this trade doesn’t work out for the Bolts, Stevie Y is officially on the clock as a crappy GM.

      • mathieug79 - Apr 3, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Not really, Conacher had 6pts in last 16 games (mostly because he wasn’t playing alongside Lecavalier, Stamkos, St Louis). Anyways Conacher needs to bulk up a little, he was a fine player for Tampa Bay, but I find he was always pushed around.

In the end, with Ben Bishop in net and Brett Connolly called up, Tampa Bay is a better team NOW and for the future! IMO great trade!!

  8. gotstamkos - Apr 3, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Holy Crap! We needed a goalie, but for Cory Caldercher. I’m happy and sad all at the same time. Bishop…we need you buddy…Please pan out!!!

  10. gotampabay52 - Apr 3, 2013 at 3:09 PM

Only thing I can see cory would be expensive up coming contract with an already expensive contracts but dam this better work that kid is already performing well i dont like this trade

    • mathieug79 - Apr 3, 2013 at 11:43 PM

Expensive? yeah maybe 1M tops, he might have 24 pts,(mostly when playing with St Louis and Stamkos) but with the emergence of Alex Killorn, Tyler Johnson, and recently called up Brett Connolly. Tampa is a better team NOW than it was yesterday. Conacher was easily replacable! Tampa Bay has a lot of NHL-ready Prospects (JT Brown, Brett Connolly,Panik, Namestnikov. Palat, Tyrell, Barberio) All of these guys could be at the NHL level this season or next season. Like I said Conacher can be replaced by any of these guys! Bishop on the other hand, give us another option if Anders Lindback doesn’t pan out like he was suppose to. Also Bishop has the rest of the season to prove himself as our #1 Goalie! love the trade!
