Penguins lack ‘effort’ in loss to Sabres

Jarome Iginla scored his first goal as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins (see the video) but that wasn’t enough in a 4-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.

The loss, which came without Sidney Crosby in Pittsburgh’s lineup, ends the Penguins’ winning streak at 15 games.

“At the time, it felt really good,” Iginla told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette of his first goal. “That was a great pass. A lot of patience, and it gave me pretty much a wide-open net.

“Now [after the game], it doesn’t feel as good. It’s a loss and the end of the streak.”

The Iginla goal got the Penguins on even terms with the Sabres in the first period, however Buffalo scored three unanswered goals and didn’t allow Pittsburgh anything.

The Penguins had just 20 shots on goal the entire game.

“The effort was not where we wanted to be, not where we can have it,” Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury told NHL.com.

“We have been playing some great hockey, and tonight didn’t seem like our best effort.”
