Flyers steal a late one from the Capitals

Mar 31, 2013, 9:12 PM EDT

If the Washington Capitals miss the playoffs by a point, they might look back at Sunday’s 5-4 overtime loss with serious regret.

The Capitals seemed to lock up a 4-2 win by scoring two goals within a minute early in the third period, but things unraveled after that.

Claude Giroux and Kimmo Timonen triggered a three-goal Flyers flurry – including Timonen’s tying tally with 10 seconds left – to give Philly the come-from-behind win. (Giroux had a goal and two assists while Timonen had a tally and three helpers.)

Both teams are now nearly in the same place in the East standings:

10. Carolina (16-15-2 for 34 points in 33 games played)
11. Washington (16-17-2 for 34 points in 35 GP)
12. Philadelphia (15-17-3 for 33 points in 35 GP)

Considering the fact that the New York Rangers’ grasp on the eighth spot in the East is tenuous at best (16-15-3 for 35 points in 34 GP), this could be a pivotal moment for both teams. Then again, others might say that maybe the Flyers simply pulled the Capitals down with them …

Jeff Schultz would fit in great with the Sabrea defence. What a worthless player.

  2. valoisvipers - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:20 PM

A shorty to tie it and another shorty to win it in OT.Good work.

  3. brianforster - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:21 PM

absolutely bogus icing call to help the flyers tie it up. but when you give up 3 goals that quickly you cant blame anyone but the capitals. insanely frustrating that this team seems allergic to progress in the playoff race.

every caps fan in the country knew what would happen when that icing was called. i felt sick to my stomach when i saw schultz on the ice.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Yeah bogus icing call. Just like the bogus 4 minute PP that put you up by two. Oh well we win and move up in the standings.

      • whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:49 PM

You Cryer fans make it so easy……you win and still cry.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:20 PM

We win again. See you and the rest of the fanboy legion in the 1st round. WHAMMY!!!

STICKING UP FOR WHAT??? that was a LEGAL check by Oleksy lol and it gave us a 4 min powerplay, rightfully so. Loved how your defenseman skated pirouettes down the ice to avoid getting the icing waved off…..ohh by the way Max Talbot hurt himself checking Green, Rinaldo charges Green and no call. I can go tit for tat buddy…..

      • isithockeyseasonyet - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:55 PM

Are you sure you watch hockey? When your best player gets hit like that, that’s what good teammates are supposed to do, even if it was a legal hit, the appropriate calls were made and that’s that. And defenseman do that all the time, stop crying, bottom line is your team choked in a game they should have won

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 1, 2013 at 6:51 AM

LET’S GET FLYERED UP !!! DAM MORE RESPONSE TO A LITTLE FLYERS WIN THAN A SID INJURY ! LETS GET FLYERD UP !! HE SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS ! SO HUMOUNGOUSBIG !

      • ibieiniid - Apr 1, 2013 at 8:38 AM

jesus eiggles… you’re really doing all you can to jinx this team aren’t you? why don’t you just show a bit of humility, let our team get back into playoff position, then maybe talk a little sh**. reading your ridiculously overconfident posts just gets tiring and depressing. are you forgetting just how inconsistent this team has been this year? i’ll personally wait for a last-10 winning record before i start getting excited. regardless, decent 2 games. bryz is back in almost top form, this hurt defense is holding their own, and the offense is making up for what the defense is lacking. but just remember…. that’s only 2 games.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 1, 2013 at 2:41 PM

ibieiiiinnnid so overconfidence makes you depressed ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ok you must be one milktoast mf”’er !

DOOP. Ah, the inconsistent FlyBoys win again.

  6. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:37 PM

Hell of a comeback by the Flyers. They needed those two points and they did whatever it took to get em. Giroux really stepped up. He made a mistake that led to the Caps 3rd goal, but he more than made up for it. Timonen, Bryz, and Fedotenko all stepped up as well. It would’ve been nice to see this team have some 60 minute efforts early on in the season, but better late than never. The Caps played a good game as well, I think it’s safe to say these two teams are more talented than their records indicate.

  7. eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:38 PM

19 min of penalty time to a guy that never had a fight in the NHL coming to the aide of his captain I don’t even try to figure it out anymore !

    • whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:51 PM

I’m shocked you didn’t blame Mario and some lame conspiracy theory for all the penalty minutes. Win and still crying. Oh yeah, I forgot – your a Cryers fan.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:12 PM

    • sjsharks66 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:30 PM

      That was 3 years ago….
So this was not his first fight.
Not seeking approval, just supporting evidence that you and the Flyers announcers are wrong.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:32 PM

        Your an approval seeker

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:40 PM

    • sjsharks66 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:35 PM

You don’t think for yourself. If the Flyers announcers said the sky was purple, you would argue when someone said it was actually blue.

      • ml3939 - Apr 1, 2013 at 10:14 AM

Actually if that Penguins dick was not constantly knocking your brain you would know that Jackson, Saunders and most definitely Coates receive their fair share of criticism around here. Furthermore, this info was initially provided by production and posted in an on screen graphic. The announcers not having seen him fight in a Flyers’ uniform yet felt safe to take production’s word for it and reiterate what the posted statement read. You are a silly little wannabe Penguins troll who is upset his team gets no pub beyond Ryan Clowe is underperforming this year and is on the trade block. Please go linger in Kings and Ducks articles. You are like a Padres’ fan trying to troll Red Sox and Yankees articles. Pointless and senseless.

      sorry PhillyPhalicSymbol….here it is WHAMMY!!!!!

BTW – the hit on Claudia Gayrioux was clean and fair. So your Cryer player deserved every PIM he got! WHAMMY!!!!!!

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:38 PM

It wast totally clean,,,,, unlike your old lady SHAMMY SHINE !!!!!!

      • whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:41 PM

hey Eagleballs – it was legal – Gayrioux touched the puck – he is fair game. No hit to the head. No stick work.

So cry me a river and explain how it was dirty. Clean hit – your DB teammate started a fight – that’s instigating and he got everything he deserved.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:49 PM

Nobody has a problem with the hit SHAMMY SHINE ! I told you it was clean unlike your old lady

  8. ml3939 - Mar 31, 2013 at 9:42 PM

Maybe Mez and Coburn were the problem.

    • ibieiniid - Apr 1, 2013 at 8:47 AM

i’m willing to give you Mez in that argument… but at this point, i’m still on Coburn’s side. Meszaros has been HORRIBLE since he came back from that injury. like… Gustafsson-level bad (another story altogether). but at least gustafsson makes a good play every now and then. Coburn has seemed to me like he’s letting the team’s woes get to him moreso than others on the team. he just looked like he’s been dragging all season, thinking about their record. hopefully we get the real Coburn back. at his top level, he might be my favorite d-man on the team (not to mention quietly making up for Mike Vick with the Coburn family’s animal charity)…. although Timonen’s play this year has really redeemed himself from last season, in my eyes. he’s been everything the team is paying for.

      • ml3939 - Apr 1, 2013 at 9:09 AM

I said it somewhat tongue in cheek. Mez has been awful (it could have been the injury) and Coburn really has not looked like himself. He is taking an awful lot of penalties as well. I am a fan of his and know he can play better. I would say outside of Grossmann, all of the D men have had off years including Kimmo (from a defensive vantage point- his lack of foot speed is a serious issue at times). I was expecting them to get trounced Saturday but was pleasantly surprised. If desperation is their source of motivation and inspiration, I will take it.

I would love to see them get Seth Jones but I like to see the team I root for play with pride and integrity. Fans of a certain team from the western side of the state cannot say the same.

  9. philly4lyfe - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:07 PM

god I can’t wait to cheer for the kc penguins in 10 years after crosby malkin and fluery retire and your team goes back to be a doormat for the rest of the league.

    • President Charles Logan - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:12 PM

and in those 10 years from now the flyers will still be without another stanley cup , 1975 lives on forever

Look President Dumba$$ is back. Shouldn’t you be worrying on who is going to change Crysby’s drool cup tonight.

  10. mclovinhockey - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:10 PM

Broadstreet, that was the right call. It’s a new rule this year. Flyers won a game due to that call once this year

  11. sjsharks66 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:16 PM

Wait….who has never had an NHL fight? Voracek????

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Yessir. And he probably never will again after he essentially got kicked out of the game and cost us two goals for standing up for a teammate. NHL needs to reevaluate that visor rule, as it’s totally illogical and contradicts their “safety first” mantra.

      • sjsharks66 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:29 PM

He fought Letang a few years back.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:32 PM

Oh ok nvm. Just going off what they said on NBCs NHL Live.

      • sjsharks66 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Oh yeah man, I was confused when I heard that.
I heard them also say it on NHL live.

      • whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 10:39 PM

standing up for a teammate????? ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!! Totally legal hit on Gayrioux. Voracek didn’t have to stand-up for anyone. If your Captain is such a Paully Prissypants that you can’t hit him legally – then you Cryer fans are more douchy than I originally thought.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:20 PM

Are you senile WHAMMY? Are you legitimately trying to tell me that when somebody lays a big hit on Crosby his teammates dont come to his defense?! The Pens would just let anybody knock around the Goldenboy… right, that’s realistic. Typical hypocritical Pens fan. Anything the Flyers do is illogical and wrong, anything the Pens do is awe inspiring and valiant. Get over yourselves. There’s no way in hell the Pens would sit back and let teams hit their Captain without consequences. And by the way, there were Pens fans who called out the Flyers for not coming to Girouxs defense when he got boarded Thursday against the Isles; now the Flyers are in the wrong for coming to his defense. What a surprise! The Flyers are damned if they do, and damned if they don’t in the eyes of those hypocrites who call themselves Pens fans.

      • whammy71 - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:28 PM

If Gayrioux got boarded – then every Flyer should be whipping ass on the the Isles. Tonight’s hit was clean and fair – no need to come to his defense. His head was down as he reached for the puck and he got whacked. Its a big boy sport – if Claudia can’t handle it – then he shouldn’t play. And if the Crapital head-hunted or used his stick….then by all means….fair to jump the punk. But he didn’t. Then your guy gets assessed a ton of PIMs and all you guys do is cry about it – even though you won. Enjoy your victories.

If it was that big of a deal – Gayrioux should have taken down the license plate and settle the score later in the game. That’s how it’s done. Not by gooning it up.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 31, 2013 at 11:48 PM

Clean or not it doesn’t matter! you conveniently didn’t respond to part about the Pens coming to Crosby’s aid, because you know the Pens would do the same. When your Captain gets nailed, his teammates stand up for him… that’s what TEAMS do. If it was legal or not, it doesn’t matter. That’s the reality of the situation. It happens all across the NHL and it always unfolds that way. It’s so easy for you, being a Flyers hater, to criticize this play as an idiotic response, but there’s no way in hell that Brooks Orpik, Engelland, or Cooke wouldn’t have done the same thing if anyone had nailed Crosby. That’s the truth, no matter how many “clever” puns you come up with. Aim for the captain and you answer to the rest of the team, it’s how hockey works.

      • whammy71 - Apr 1, 2013 at 6:34 AM

Goonism 101 – and you Filthy fans wonder why no one likes your team outside of Philly.

I didn’t conveniently leave anything out. Pens and 99% of the other teams don’t stoop to Philly’s 1970-era tactics.

Geno and Sid have been knocked on their asses plenty of times with legal hits and no one from the Pens starts fighting. You take a mental note and get the dude back later in the game during play.

      • ml3939 - Apr 1, 2013 at 8:51 AM

I am pretty sure I have seen Ulf Samuelsson, Matt Cooke, James Neal (in last years’ playoffs) and even Kris Letang (in picking a fight with Kimmo) all act like goons. That is just off the top of my head. I have even seen the aforementioned Geno try and take off Giroux’s head with an elbow. Take off the Pens’ blinders douche.

Right on cue. I was wondering when you’d show up to dampen our spirits with a dose of reality formulated by the superior intellect of the almighty Bobhpine. Tell us again how Giroux is a terrible captain, Timonen has nothing left, and the Flyers aren’t fit to share the ice with infallible and angelic Penguins. Inform us with your troll-like wisdom how Philthy has the same number of wins as Pittsburghs winning streak. The Flyers must be talentless because your far more developed brain allows you to see things that we Philadelphians can only dream of. Go on.. tell us again why the Flyers can’t hold a candle to your Pens… we’ve never heard it before!

Goalie interference on Simmonds… for getting clearly checked into Holtby by a Caps defender. A play that they somehow allowed to go on until the Flyers scored a goal then conveniently decided it was a penalty. Simmonds got slashed several times… uncalled. Giroux got held… no call. The refs were terribly inconsistent… towards BOTH teams so enough with this icing. That kind of call happens all the time… a player getting two minors and a misconduct for wearing a visor when he starts a fight in a 2-2 game is a lot more questionable.

    • drone501 - Apr 1, 2013 at 7:49 AM

The kicker is carolina with 2 games in hand… THAT is what could make or break several teams playoff aspirations.
As for loser penguins fans… Go the hell away. Yea we get it dust of your glorious trophy, your team is so amazing unseen by sports around the world, we hail you, we will bow down when we see you in malls etc wearing crosby jerseys. All hail penguins fans.

    END OF THE MESOZOIC ERA?

I’m not trying to rub it in … in fact quite to the contrary. But the bottom line is that you Capitals need to “cleanse” yourselves of that Russian hot dog asap, lest you become some sort of a perennial joke. Do it man and do it now!

  18. blastardo - Apr 1, 2013 at 8:06 AM

I think the one thing we can all agree is the awesome referee display we saw for this game.

Is it just me or should Green have got a holding penalty on Giroux’s breakaway? And I thought that icing was an early April Fools joke that the ref was trying to pull off. Bad calls for both teams.

And give Orlov a jersey next game.
